High Score Competition #225: Vs. Dr. Mario
« on: August 28, 2017, 07:55:04 pm »
High Score Competition rules and scoreboard found here: http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,143138.0.html

                                  Virus level: 3
                                  Drop speed up: slow

              Game options: Virus level: Zero
                                    Speed: Normal
Music: whichever helps soothe your nerves   ;D
Controls
   Joystick: 4-way
   Buttons: 2 (flip left/right)

From Super Mario Wiki:
All Dr. Mario games feature a large grid as the main game interface. This grid (in the shape of a large pill bottle) starts out partially filled with three types of viruses, Chill (blue), Fever (red), and Weird (yellow). The main objective of the game is to clear the grid of the viruses. This objective can be fulfilled with the help of multi-colored pills called Megavitamins. These pills are two-blocks wide and come in the same color as the viruses. Usually, they are sectioned off into two random colors, but occasionally contain only one random color. These pills are guided down the grid by the Player's +Control Pad. They can be rotated by the A Button. To eliminate a virus, four blocks of a color (pill or virus) must be piled up. The stack will then disappear. If a virus was contained in the stack, the virus will be eliminated as well.

If the stacks of pills or viruses reach the top of the grid, the player receives a Game Over.

The game was later released on the Nintendo VS. System under the name VS. Dr. Mario. This version drops the Slow mode and features a less generous scoring system. In the NES version, the first virus killed by a vitamin yields 200 points (on Normal mode), the second 400, the third 800, the fourth 1600. So each virus is worth twice as much as the last. In the VS. version, the first virus is worth 200, then 400, then 600, then 800. So a virus is worth only 200 points more, and not twice as many points, as the previous virus.

Last Day: Sunday, September 10th 2017

Quest for the Bronze Joystick! The most successful competitor of each calendar year will possess & display the BYOAC Bronze Joystick Trophy.

Happy Gaming!

My wife & I played this *A LOT* (On NES & mostly N64), so the Vs. version feels weird, but it didn't hold back my awesomeness!

I just plain got pooped out & was losing interest & lost concentration. I'm used to playing head-to-head & stacking up combos to irritate my wife. There seem to be no point bonuses of any sort playing 1-player, so there's no need to take the risks of stacking up combos. (Correct?)

For reference, my 115u2 showed DIP defaults of speed increase after 7 (not 10), & virus level 1 (not 3). I changed my settings to match the top post before playing.
Just curious. Not suggesting making any changes & pulling a King of Dragons here. (Also just leaving a reminder note here for my future self to change the settings back in 2 weeks).

What I read on Super Mario Wiki:
The bonus points for the NES version double for each extra virus destroyed in a chain.  (ex: 200, 400, 800, 1600)
The bonus points for the arcade increase by 200 each time: 200, 400, 600, 800.

Thats not earth shattering, but it's SOME incentive.

Used to own this.  We could play for an hour on one credit and the 20 second music loop drove me insane.  Sold it and haven't played it since.

If you were trying to get a Nintendo trophy playing a SEGA game, I've got some bad news for you.

I love mean bean machine! One of the best, imho. Puyo Puyo on the switch, right? I seem to remember hearing that Puyo Puyo was renamed to Mean bean machine when it came to the US?

This has been a pretty quiet one. I think it would have been more fun if I had picked some different settings.   :dunno

It would have been more fun if you had picked a different game :) I really dislike the genre.

35,800. Just so you don't have to pick the next one.

Sorry to hear that. The soundtrack is one of my favorite things about this game. It takes me back to my parents sending me to bed at night, only to huddle around an end table lamp with my game boy. They loved this game even more than I did, I think. Haha

Meh, it doesn't have a clean difficulty curve like Tetris.  I enjoyed owning the arcade game for awhile but was very happy to see it go.
