Need Bulletproof Tablets - Suggestions?
« on: August 14, 2017, 06:56:40 pm »
I need 3 to 5 inexpensive tablets that will need to run one app only (league software). League players will be handling them on a regular basis and I need something that will hold up. I hate tablets, so I'm clueless. Suggestions? Android please.

How about the fire tablets.... the ruggedized kids versions?  I think you get a discount if you buy multiple units.

any real ruggedized/work site tablet solutions I've looked into are starting in the $800 range. Some of the more expensive ones in the $4000 range but that was like ultra rugged "run it over with a forklift" kinda rugged.

The galaxy tab "active" is a little better ruggedized version of the Galaxy tab everyone knows and loves. They are about as cheap as rugged goes. About the equivalent shock protection as a spigen case but the addition of water ingress resistance.

https://www.amazon.ca/Samsung-Galaxy-Active-16GB-Titanium/dp/B00OLLIX76/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1502776406&sr=8-10&keywords=samsung+tab+active

short of buying kids cases for a $100 tablet....

lilshawn must not know how to google.... yeah a 700 dollar tablet for frikkin fantasy football.... that isn't overkill at all.

Here you go... 80 bucks a pop.... I believe even less if you order five.

https://www.amazon.com/b?ie=UTF8&node=6669703011&tag=googhydr-20&hvadid=208988526154&hvpos=1t1&hvexid=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=13158082555964232510&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&ref=pd_sl_8zyo32hgqw_e

I haven't used them personally, but members of my extended family love them.  Mind you they are a bit tech illiterate and need something to hold their hand, but for your application that sort of thing isn't going to matter anyway.  For a name brand, low cost tablet, the fire tablets are the cheapest with the most horsepower for your money.

You can get them even cheaper without the bumpers btw.... I think they are at the low cost point to where you aren't going to freak out if someone kills one.  I believe you can buy extended warranties on them as well.

This.  They are cheap enough and do the job.  At $49 you are not breaking the bank.  Is it little league?

Rather than embarrass someone with some SpongeBob toy, couldn't you just send the app to their personal phones?

^This -- It's cheaper to get the $50 fire tablet and a $15 case for $65 than get the kids version tablet for $80 !!

Plus you get to choose the case look and feel...

I picked up one of the new $50 fire tablets and it is ok. It works but is not the fastest. Be sure your App is also on the Amazon store or has an APK available. Fire tablets don't get the play store.

EDIT-

I found this on Amazon $12 fire 7 case all black.

Nobody said proper ruggedization was cheap. Like I mentioned you can get a cheapy tablet and a kids case... it all depends HOW rugged/cheap you want it. (which wasn't specified.)

cheapy kids tablet... under a 1/2 hundo
decent tablet with "kids" case... about a hundo
Ruggedized tablet ... couple hundo
mobiledemand ultra rugged ... 9  to 30 hundos depending on configuration.

pick your poison. the chepy kids tablets often run, what...android 3.0.. 4.0? is your apk even compatible? might be something to look into.

Alright. This is for steel tip dart leagues. The app replaces the chalk board as well as the score sheet players used to have to fill out manually. The tablets will be mounted near (not directly next to) the dart boards. There is a possibility that a drunk darter may slip, and a dart hit a tablet. I'm not looking for something that can withstand a dart hit, nor something that is going to need to be ruggedized. Just something that can hold up to a couple years of regular use by many people. Those 7 inch fires look alright. What's the "special offers" I'd have to deal with?

They have ads on the lock screen, I don't even notice them you can pay like $20 more to get a fire w/o ads.

Is the app in the amazon store?

It was already said but worth repeating - Fire tablets do not run standard Android, they run a fork and do not have Google Play store, so be sure your app runs on it.

You CAN side load Google Play store pretty easily, but a lot of apps will be buggier on the Fire in general than on true android tablets.

I have an HD10 and had a third gen 8.9" before that.  The older 8.9 was more expensive than the newer one but was also faster despite being nearly 2 years older.  My new boss just picked up a newest gen HD8 a weeks ago and it seems to be fairly snappy, unlike my HD10 that is 2 years old now, so it seems that even as cheap as they are, they are putting a halfway decent processor in them.  He successfully side loaded Google Play store and got all his Google apps loaded on (calendar, hangouts, gmail, etc.) and they work fine, so that was encouraging but don't assume all apps will work right.

If a Fire HD tablet will work for you, it is hands down the best value out there.  Either way, I would go cheap over rugged, and just add a case to make it last longer.  The ads thing is not even noticeable for me, so I wouldn't bother with the extra $20.  Locally our Best Buy usually has them in stock for the same (regular) price as Amazon.  At the least you can go try one out if you have one in your area.

Force new technology down their throat until they forgot what it was like using the chalkboard, then praise the new tech as "so much better" until everyone buys into it.  In a year or two, everyone will wonder how they managed to get through the night with the "old fashioned" chalkboard.  This is how you "upgrade" anything successfully in a business, so no reason it won't work for a dart league.

I wonder...would a 10" windows tablet work? You can pick up a off-lease windows tablet with an atom CPU and 2 gb of ram for ~$60. IDK if there is dart scoring software for windows but the bigger screen might work better and be more visible.

Another idea would be to output whatever tablet you choose to a TV mounted on the wall kinda like bowling. Are all your players going to be able to see a 7 inch tablet from the throw line?

Perhaps you need a AIO PC with a touch screen?

-Pause to google-

Well what do you know this n01 dart software runs on anything...

Quote
n01 was built to play 501 games with steel tip darts. You may input the score that you got in the games. n01 shows winning average and also your dart average.

n01 is the scoring software for real 501 games on the dart board, but not video game.

You are getting a 150 dollar tablet for 70 bucks.  What did you expect?  The xbox doesn't have ads, unless you mean the single 2 inch square in the far left, which is actually useful as it advertises the upcoming promotions and discounts.  I've gotten 5 or 6 free months of xbl what way.

Anyway as for removing those ads and installing non amazon apps... here you go guys

Sheesh... you people act like we don't all have a hobby that primarily consists of finding software work-arounds.

ADA National Championships 2 weeks ago would strongly suggest otherwise.

Cool.

Despite dkersten's braying otherwise, I've been involved in a couple of efforts to force tablets on employees.  We went back to the clipboards and chalkboards pretty quick.

I don't think ipads are very rugged.  Mine cracked the glass from a temperature change after I was reading it outside and took it into the AC.  I've 'dealt with it' for 2 years but it's quite annoying.  The iPhone 6 was fragile garbage, my wife went through at least 4 of them.

The Amazon tablets are fine, I'd go with those.

I can attest to apple products not being very rugged.  Mom's killed 5 or 6 iphones over the years.  There's a reason I hate on apple all the time.  ;)  The thing is... with these higher priced tablets you might get better performance or added features, but for your application you don't need any of that, and they are all just as fragile... be it the surface, an ipad, a galaxy tab or the cheap bargain bin stuff you find at your local s-mart.  With the fire tablets you know the things will perform reasonably well, or else I would have suggested a no-name brand.
