SNES classic anyone?
« on: July 21, 2017, 04:57:57 pm »
So I was interested in the NES classic but didn't take the bait.  Half regerts half meh.  But the SNES classic, with Starfox 2, and a pretty righteous list of other titles right out of the box...sign me the ---fudgesicle--- up.  Got my amazon alert all set.  If I was in the UK I would've preordered already.

Plus, if history serves, it's only a matter of time before this thing plays NES titles too, which is a win/win IMO.

Anyone else pumped about this?  Did I miss a thread or something?

Yep there's a thread - but hasn't seen much discussion lately since the pre-orders haven't opened in the U.S. and still a couple months before it goes on sale   - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,154018.0.html

Ooof, yeah, a thread full of "my nostalgia is better than your nostalgia."

I'm good.  Super excited about this contraption tho, hope I can get my grimy fingers on it.

It has nothing to do with nostalgia, rather it has to do with which console objectively had better games.  Starting another thread doesn't avoid this conversation.  ;)

Honestly there aren't as many games, which makes zero sense because there are some key first party games missing and the nes classic board (which I'm sure they are still using) has more than enough space for 30 snes titles.  The case design is kind of crap as well.... that flip down thing for the controller ports is silly.  There's also a 20 dollar price hike when, at the most, they could justify a 10 dollar hike for the extra controller.

If the Star Fox 2 rom is a more complete version of the game than the one floating around that would be something worth getting and snes flash carts leave many of these games unplayable, so it might be worth it for those things alone.  I'm waiting to see if Nintendo makes good on their promise.  If it's relatively easy to get I'll pick one up, otherwise I'll just wait until this fad is over and get one for next to nothing.

Heh, I can't help thinking that some people who were lucky enough to get hold of a NES Classic are now a bit miffed about the existence of the SNES Classic as it will probably devalue their original purchase...

If the SNES Classic is capable of playing NES games (which is highly likely) then I think it has the potential to be better than the NES Classic as a general purpose retrogaming box. The only question mark is whether Nintendo attempts to Tivoize it this time. I think that's unlikely, and it would be against their interests as anyone savvy enough to use Hakchi will also be more than savvy enough to install a SNES emulator on a Pi. But you never know. Nintendo have been quite spiteful about copyright infringement in the past.

It'll be the same board, running the same software, with the same minimal protection.  There's simply not enough space on it to make it viable for a large SNES library.  Progress on external storage has gone nowhere in seven months on the Nes classic...

Even if that's the case, which I don't doubt, that still leaves plenty of room to customize it into a nifty little SNES/NES combo with choice titles.  I can lose a few of the stock SNES titles easy and there are only a dozen or so must have NES roms for me.

You can't delete what's on the board by default, only override it, so you won't save space by removing snes titles.

I'll keep an eye out, but I think getting one when I did was a small miracle.  I just happened to be up and at the keyboard when they went on sale.

Same here - was checking my e-mail for the day just as the Walmart notification came through -- was a bit miffed as I had just ordered a rpi3 case a couple days ago with the Card I use for internet orders so my balance on the debit card was below the $90 I had been keeping on it just for pre-orders - so thought I'd miss it but went to the Walmart a couple minutes from the house and added $100 to the debit card - came home and still was able to get the order in before it got shut down.

No cancellation E-mail yet  :dunno but with NOA's track record I'll believe it is coming when it actually arrives.

Yeah mine says it's still coming before Oct 4th.

Honestly I think that false order thing might be another b.s. Kotaku article.  Either that or towards the end the ordering server got overloaded and pitched a fit.  I got mine in well before it was over.

I guess I can't find the draw in these as I still own my old consoles in working order with all the games I had growing up.  If I ever feel the need to purchase more games I just track them down which is, in my eyes, fun.  I don't understand paying exorbitant amounts of money for something that you can still purchase on the interwebs and track down at flea markets for dirt cheap.

Maybe its me but I feel if Nintendo actually put these out and made them "programmable" where you could add games to your tastes I believe they would be more successful with the product.  I feel these are being sold as a gimmick.  As in "NOW WITH MORE BLAH, BLAH, BLAH."

They sell it with 21 games but honestly looking at the list I feel I would play only six.  And not consistently.  So maybe above 25% of the games offered?
No thanks.  There are alternatives to these consoles.  Which The Sorrow of Moldovia has shown us how to create for the same price tag, if not below.

Using the wrong adjective is a grammar error.  I just misspelled exorbitant incorrectly.  Making what I did a spelling error.  It still doesn't make me want to change my mind about Nintendo reselling old games in new hardware.

I do not understand nintendoh's logic.  Why pay for legal games when you can download them for free.  Silly Nintendoh.   :dunno
