Anybody here a fan of Dinosaurs?
« on: July 19, 2017, 02:54:28 am »
Totally not arcade related in any way, but i just finished this life size baby Allosaurus for my living room. It's about 3.5 feet tall by just over 10 feet long (if you account for the bend in the neck).   It's made of high grade, " baltic birch plywood that I cut out on my buddies CnC table.

I've aged the wood with Varathane "weathered wood accelerator", which rapidly ages the wood rather than staining it. And i didn't varnish or seal it in any way so that it will age further as time goes on. This stuff was pretty cool. You just sand it with 100 grit, then use a foam brush to soak it, let it dry and chemically it "adjusts" the wood. Water based too, so it was crazy easy to deal with.  I used a really heavy amount of it on certain parts to give it a "rippled" effect.

Gotta say, quite happy with the overall end result. It fits perfectly over top of the fireplace. Usually when people come in the front door and start to walk past our main staircase they see my JAMMA cab sitting in the dining room. I usually get a "Oh cool, you have an arcade game!" sort of response, (then i take them down to the basement arcade). Now i don't know what to expect. haha

Here's some more construction pictures. Pretty simple actually: Right off the CnC, then a few hours of sanding to round off the edges randomly. a bit of "sculpting" with the sander to the teeth and claws. And no glue needed, just a little persuasion with a rubber mallet. It's free standing too!  And for scale i've also got a picture of my buddy standing next to a slightly larger one (by about 8%-10%) that we cut for his shop out of MDF. Small plug for his shop, he owns www.Cornelsworld.com

I have 5 clients that match that description.

I'm more of a fan of butterflies.  Dinosaurs are cool I guess since they power our cars...

That seems like a fun project to keep kids busy, not -so-sure about in the house though, seems a bit 2 dimensional, and unfinished. Stain over clear would at least seal it off yet not make it look stained. Covering it with chicken wire and foam might make it look like its alive.... However they do make real cast kits you may like 8) http://www.angelfire.com/mi/dinosaurs/#.WXB9QJUo6YM

Very cool Chance. What do you do for a living that you have access to all these cool tools???

I am hearing now most scientist are thinking dinosaurs are bird ancestors and were covered in feathers; all those 2 legged ones think more ostrich and less lizard.

Aren't we all in some form of another?

That's really cool.  I hadn't heard about that varathane stuff before.   I'll have to check it out for some projects I'm working on.  Thanks for sharing.

Good point.

I guess I just like things that can be used to make other things.  This CnC for example belongs to my buddy Greg who cut the side profiles and CP topper for my FLYNN's cab a few years ago.  I was in building his business a new website over the last couple weeks, and finally getting this cut was part of the deal.  Truth be told it was an Xmas present for my girlfriend to put up in our new place when we moved in here in November. But we only really got around to making it in the last couple weeks because i was spending so much time at my buddies shop.
