New ATARI BOX images released
« on: July 17, 2017, 02:13:10 pm »
Still not much for system specs yet... but 4 usbs, card slot, power, HDMI and looks to be an Ethernet cable connector in the center....

Getting excited!

It looks interesting and I like the fact that the back is a bright red-orange so you can see what you are plugging into, but my guess is, like the c64 a few years ago, it's just a fancy pc with Atari branding.

To be fair any console is just a fancy PC with branding.

Not much to go on yet other than the pics and the "it will deliver old and new gaming experiences".

Ime quietly excited, Ime no Atari fan boy but I do want to see what they bring to the table.

It will probably be similar to the NES Classic (i.e. a mobile phone SOC running an emulator).

However, that's not necessarily a bad thing as long as the price is right.

With all those ports I would think it might have a bit more heft to it.  You rarely see 4 usb and an Ethernet port on a soc.  My guess is it's a pc.... it'll emulate all past Atari consoles, from the 2600 on up to the Jaguar and their oddball PCs.  It'll also have a marketplace with all the Atari games released in recent years... like that Ghostbusters game last gen ect....  Any "new games" will just be pc games via steam and/or Atari's own steam-like marketplace.

Nah I cant see it being a emu machine due to the aforementioned comment.

It does not appear to have any CD drive etc so I would guess Howards theory of it having a online market place the most feasible idea.

Would keep costs low for them to.

Who even owns the Atari ROMs anymore... seems like they've changed hands 20 times in the last 10 years.

! No longer available

They've been pumping this retro ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- for a long, long time.

Good way to avoid the expense of dumping truckloads of E.T carts at the landfill.   >:D

Atari still owns them, but the question is who owns Atari?  What time is it?  In a couple of hours they'll probably change hands again.  ;)

Can I just add that in a world where hillbillies like Howard_Casto own a 3D printer, I have ceased to be impressed/interested in computer renderings.

To be fair even high end 3d printers often print out parts that look like garbage without a lot of finish work.  I've got to imagine those fins would have been a nightmare to clean up.

But yeah, if it's crowdfunded then that means Atari isn't willing to foot the bill, nor are these crappy retro shovelware companies like at@games.  In other words it's a horrible business decision, which means nobody is going to make games for it.  (Not that I thought they would even when I thought Atari was doing it.)

Just notified pre-order's are open for the Atari box!
It also apparently has a custom AMD APU and runs linux.
will run most recent games at medium settings.

really just looks like it's going to be a steam box or something similar with Atari content as a bonus but not enough details.
