New Guy Here
« on: July 10, 2017, 12:28:40 am »
Howdy folks,
I just get myself registered and wanted to pop in and say hi.  I'm Brian (or just B).  I'm mid way through building my first arcade cabinet.  This is completely from scratch and, as of right now, will be running on a Raspberry Pi.  I'm waiting on some graphics to come in, and for my glass to get cut, but the cabinet itself is coming along.

Anyways - I'll be sharing the build when it's done, and I'm sure I'll have questions eventually, but for now I just wanted to say hi.

Thanks for the welcomes!  Work's coming along on the cabinet.  Still a couple weeks before it'll be done, though.  Graphics should be in tomorrow so I'm excited about that.  Still have to finish finishing the cabinet before I can do anything with them, but exciting nonetheless.

I was planning on doing a build thread after I get it finished.  I am taking photos at most points of the process.  Not quite ready to show the cabinet, but here's an earlier photo of the side and lower front pieces.  It's much farther along now.

Welcome aboard!

This thread can probably be moved to Project Announcements since you've got cracking on it already :)

Thank you, danny_galaga.  I'm not going to post up anything else about this build in this thread, though.  I'll start a new one for that.  :)  It would probably be easier to post progress as I go, rather than spending hours writing up the whole thing at once, but this way I can hide my mistakes easier.  :D

Dont hide mistakes matey.
We all make them and by highlighting them make it easier for others to learn from them!

As for the build good start!
Are those decals you have stuck on or have you burnt it on?

Ah I was just jokin' about the mistakes.   In fact, I just made one on the control panel a few minutes ago, but it's easily fixable.

I threw those panels in the laser and engraved them.  It'll be much more subtle on the finished piece.

Yeah maybe I'll start a build thread sooner than I originally planned.  It'll probably help to keep the information accurate as my memory is terrible and I don't write anything down.

Welcome to the most expensive hobby you will ever have. And the most addictive.
Good work so far on your cabinet.

Thank you guys!  I sure hope it's not the most expensive hobby.  My cars love to dig deep into my wallet already!  Working on a build thread now in the project announcements forum. :)

Agreed.  This hobby can be done cheaply, BUT the problem is as soon as you are done with one project you get the idea for the next and it snowballs from there.  In the case of people like me, you get the idea for the next project before you finish the last and you have a row of 90% completed cabs.

Well the way I see it is like this...

I can:
A) put money in the bank, let it sit there and get feck all interest.
B) spend it on stuff to enrich my life.

I go for B :)

I spend lots on my gaming hobby, But I spend more on my house so ya know ime responsible n ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- lol

I think after the initial build, if you really stay in this hobby, you realize that there are things that are important to spend your money on, and there's things that are frivolous that ultimately don't affect gameplay, which hopefully becomes much more important to you. My first MAME cab has LED buttons, had a spinner, had a lit trackball. Every build since then there has been A emphasis on quality parts that are practical. I know what to spend my money on now. I'll never buy LED buttons again. I don't think I'll ever use a LCD as a marquee. I'd rather spend my money on quality keyboard encoders and joysticks.

Totally with you there mate.
I only ever buy quality bits and urge others to do so.

I take that outlook on all things though not just arcade controls haha.

Though now ime used to them and some minor modifications I quite like my LED Buttons.
But they do feel different to a nice Concave.
