Couple Questions About Dreamcast HKT-3010
« on: June 17, 2017, 05:49:58 pm »
First off, glad I found this site!  Pretty neat.

So, I've been contemplating getting a Dreamcast for a while now.  I had one at launch, with basically every game, and like a the young fool I was, got rid of it, along with all kinds of gaming things that are worth a lot of money now day

Anyways, to my question.

I was looking to buy and mod one but decided instead of dealing with the headache, just getting an older one to play burned games on.  I ran across one locally on Craigslist and it's a HKT-3010 NTSC J model.  I know that's a Japanese model, and I don't know much about them.

For one, can it play burned games?  It doesn't have a numbered (0 or 1) rating so I don't know how to tell.  Secondly, can it play burned games from US region or will I have to use a boot disc or other mod?

Thanks for any advice, I appreciate it.

I think you can on the jap dc.  I just patch the disc and load it in the dc.

I could be wrong on the jap unit.  I remember that the Japan DC was special.
If I had only one wish, it would be for three more wishes.

I say buy it before its gone. Test it out. Worse case it doesnt, then flip it and use that money to get another one.

Are there any common problems I should worry about with DC's?  Like disc drive read failure or anything like that?

This one is listed as untested so I'm a little leary about it.

I'd like to snag it, the price is good.

The disc drives do fail eventually. Especially with burned games. But ive never came across a DC that didn't work.

Gotcha, thanks.

Hopefully someone can confirm the deal with the 3010 Japanese version as to if it works or not for burned games and US games.  Would rather be certain it works before buying it, as I just want to play some old favorites a little.

Hardy hardy hardy.  You think I didn't Google first before going to a random forum, creating an account and going through the process in order to post on said random forum?

I'm not seeing a straight forward answer.  Hence, why I asked.

For anyone who's interested, it looks like he listed it on eBay too.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Sega-Dreamcast-Video-Game-System-Console-4-Controllers-amp-5-Memory-Cards-/201946633181?

I messaged him on there and he refuses to test it.  He said he knows nothing about the system, he said he bought untested and he's selling it as such.

If you want to take the risk, there it is.

I ended up getting a Model 0 for $99 with four controllers and 2 VMU's instead of risking it.

Bro thats a little steep. Your mostly paying for a lot of memory cards and controllers. Get a cheaper one that you know plays burned games

I didn't buy the one I linked, I was posting it in case anyone was interested.

I got one that was tested and working.  System, four controllers, two VMU's and Sonic Adventure for $99 shipped.

The cheapest one I found was $60 and it only had two controllers and one VMU.
