Another Happy Delivery!
« on: June 12, 2017, 12:17:45 am »
Figured Id toss this up for you guys to see. starting to get some traction here in my area. I have had some special request for artwork and machines that are currently in the works.

Not sure if it would be helpful but if anyone needs I have a great printing partner who is very reasonably priced for printing

Why are the controls on top of the table?

This looks great! I actually prefer the controls on top, depending on how tall someone is, it's uncomfortable to be reaching inside for the controls.
So who are you using to print the artwork?

Top controls make the build processmuch easier and it is much more comfortable to play in my opinion.

I have a guy here locally and a guy on the east coast that really treat me well. Hit me up if you need anything.

I don't like them on top for aesthetic reasons, but that cabinet seems to be well done.

I don't understand the point of emulating a bad cabinet design and then doing something like top mount the controls.  All of the sore neck, none of the authenticity of cramped controls.

Wasn't some company in China pumping them out like that a few years ago?

Anyway, you're happy, customer is happy, I'm happy.

1) You mixed Marvel and DC
2) Theme screams poser to me
3) Top Mounted controls are aesthetically unpleasing to me.
4) Next time you should do a build thread  :dunno

I think those two either did a cross over or one is in the works, but it does look jarring to me as a casual comic book fan.

The main reason people only post finished products is they don't want it copied, apparently this is his business.  This should of went in the finished projects thread.

I myself don't like the stick and buttons on top either, and what's with that stray button all alone?

If your sitting down your hands are comfortable at a 90 degree angle near the waist, with this application you now have to reach up and over.  I dont see how your wrists would sit properly at that angle.

Most novice buyers dont know any better, which is why mods of this type do fairly well, its different, and playing in pain is a minor technicality in relation to oh look at what i just bought.

I'm more curious if he used plexi or had the tops custom cut in glass.

Theme was requested buy the buyer, I don't dream that stuff up myself........

Top controls are an easier design and I don't do this for a business, I do this for a select number of people that I know. I personally have a a number of machines that I keep at home that have different controls in different configurations, I personally like the top controls because Im not banging my knuckles on the top and it suits either sitting or standing as the screen can be viewed correctly at any of those angles

It is plexi on top

Don't take offense, it's just nobody is going to sing your praises for this type of thing.

I'm sure you are doing well to make $ on these things and if your audience is just folks that want some bideo games to play then I'm sure they will be happy with your control setup.

However most people here are hardcore and/or appreciators of games as an artform.  And we all have our opinions of what is and what is not Janky.

More power to you to keep on building, and listening to what your clients want.

No offense on this side, honest. Like you say its not everyone's cup of tea.

Its an easy cheap design that keeps people interested in doing more. I don't do it to make a profit, my main job takes care of that. This is more of a hobby or stress relief. The graphics are what I get a kick out of, taking people's ideas and making them a reality. I am no comic aficionado, so the whole DC vs Marvel is lost on me. These are friends of mine that requested the theme and I put it together from low res pics I found online. The vector drawing on that one was very tedious to say the least to get the characters to look right.

I figured there is a better chance of making a little extra by offering my contact for a printer here, he does these pretty cheap for me so I thought Id pass it along.

Hmmm, plexi?  Do you know that top is gonna look like ass after a few months, plexi is not scratch resistant, which is another why the normal design has the controls under and not on top.

If anything lose the exit/power button off the top, while i agree with simplicity, you still have to make good decisions as a builder.  I like the graphics and the overall build, just not what you did with the controls.

You would be surprised but I built one last year that is in a business that the owner didn't want to change it to glass and it still looks as good as the day I delivered it. Polycarbonate from Lowes

That means nobody has touched it. Polycarbonate is even less scratch resistant than acrylic.

poly carb Lexan is not the same as plexi.  If thats what you used then you should be ok.  I think graphics printers use a poly carb coating on CP graphics that dont use a plexi top.

That's what i used and it is fairly scratch resistant.

I may be wrong buy getting holes cut in glass isnt cheap.

Again, you would be wrong about the plays, I have been in there with kids and parents playing it. It can be very entertaining to here about someones first experience seeing and playing Pacman.

You are correct about glass cutting, ordering them with the holes already cut was nothing short of shocking. I have ordered the top from a local supplier once with the 4" rounded corners already cut, then cut the button holes myself. with patience and luck it isn't terribly difficult. there are many tutorials online that show you how

Love how you guys keep busting his chops over an $800 cabinet.  Man says the tops don't get scratched, they probably don't get scratched.

How hard is it to copy a box with joysticks on top of it?

There are a number of steps you can skip if you don't have to build and mount the box on the side of the cabinet.  I'm in the process of building a cocktail cabinet right now and can see where this would be easier.  Time is money and it sounds like the customer was happy with the result.

Having said that I'm not mounting the controls on the top with mine as I'm going for an authentic look.

Thanks guys, Its a great past time to build these and its fun to share it with others.

wp34, I love your work, love how you keep it as close to original silhouette as possible. I have read through your TobiKomi Scratch Build thread and have to say I may do a smaller one as well with a 17" monitor for my girls to play

Aesthetic and ergonomic choices aside, if this isn't a business, then why not post build pics? Showing it off at the end to a forum that is all about DIY isn't in the spirit.
Sure, people don't like how it looks, but perhaps people would respect the way it's built, at least.

For the next project you post here (if there is one), try to document your process. This forum isn't only about the destination, it's about the journey.

It's his build and by request of the customer.  If both are happy what's the big deal and who cares?  If it works good then I would call it a success.  I built one once with no control panel whatsoever.  Just a slotted storage system with hard-wired various gamepad controllers.  Had a rotary knob to select which controllers were active.  You pick it, select your system/game and go, no mame/arcade at all on a full-sized standup arcade but it's ok because that's what the customer wanted and I haven't heard a single complaint since delivering more than a year ago.

I'd even say that the controls on top help prevent it from being a mail/junk collection table in the long run.  Good job, looks like a quality build and lots of fun!

Geez, nice way to bust the new guys chops...

Well done cabinet! I'm not sure how much profit there is if your build costs is around $800. I was selling cabinet for $850 and even though I had free computers and monitors - my builds seemed to come in between $350-$500. When I was selling cabinets, I would run into the occasional person who seemed to be successful selling cabinets for double/triple what I was selling them for but I never could tap into that market.

I agree, simple box or not that could have been a nice straightforward story to tell. I was surprised to see only 1 pic of the final result.

It's surprising how rewarding even reviewing your own journey can be in 12 months time when you completely forgot how this project was put together. I mean unpacking it and following the instructions on which panel should be connected where and the endless phone calls because they hadn't made instructions clear not to mention the missing bolts that were supposed to connect part A to part F on page 37.

Joking aside, everyone benefits from the full story. Share share share.

Apart from the short change i got from reading this thread and the obvious concerns all looks cool. Respect to you for the effort on art work too!
