Thanks guys,

Artwork arrived - and I’m really REALLY pleased with the finish. I won’t have time to apply it today but thought I’d do a preview shot anyway.

The end is definitely in sight now!

Re: The Invaders: 13 November - Artwork 40% applied
« Reply #81 on: November 13, 2017, 11:46:51 am »
Hi all - I’d hoped to get all the artwork on today but the bezel took me way longer than I expected. Mostly because I was trying to line it up perfect but also because it was an absolute bugger to get on straight due to the shape of it. (narrow borders on each side meant that I misaligned the bottom a few times). In the end, spraying the perspex with water first gave me the give I needed to reposition it until it was right.

Anyway - pics.

Here’s the bezel mounted to the perspex. I wanted it on the outside so it would meet with the cpo properly so I had it printed on the same matt laminate material.

Control panel was a lot simpler as it was just a case of positioning the cp and cpo over a glass table and shining a light underneath to match the control positions.

And here is where I’m at so far.

It’s intentionally quite generic because of the dynamic marquee and I wanted it to resemble the JAMMA cabs that were prolific over here in the UK back in the 80s. I tried to make it so that the graphics would emit from the center of the screen up to the marquee area and down to the bottom of the CP so that it would be seamless. This is mostly what made it such a pain in the ass to apply!

I’ve got the final 3 pieces to apply tomorrow - the speaker/start panel and the sidearts. I’m hoping they will be simpler than today!

So much win! I love it man. Great how that burst pattern lines up between the cp and bezel. Amazing.

Cheers guys - took a while to do (as simple as it looks in the end!)

Now getting them matched to the side art (design wise - they’re not on yet) took a hell of a lot more work. Just hope i don’t screw it up tomorrow!  ;D

At long last! Got the speaker/start panel vinyl on and the sideart which means in terms of artwork it’s now complete. I’m really happy with the results that I got from Olly at https://www.arcadeartshop.com/

Have to say a big thanks to Opt2not for giving me some great advice on the artwork as I was designing it. It’s come out a 100% better than it would have been without his help.

Just got a few little bits to wrap up now before I can call the cabinet 100% complete - ie dremeling a little off the button holes on the start/speaker panel to make them line up correctly with the artwork (it's bugging me already!) and securing the bezel properly but it’s all pretty much wrapped up. Will post some better pics and a vid once it’s all done.

And thanks for the comments everyone!

This is cabinet building at its finest.

Noobs take note.  This machine will comfortable play nearly every vertical game in the Mame catalog flawlessly.

Thanks guys. It's been a fun build - despite the numerous problems I had while building it. If there was ever a jinxed cab then this was it!

I'm still not playing it until I've finished the odd jobs. Then I'll chuck a video together.  :)

That turned out really nice.  The flat bezel and CP remind me of the original Space Invaders yet the rest looks very modern.  I usually prefer a coin door but your cabinet looks good without one.  The side-art really puts it over the top.   :applaud:

I don't know what it is about the aesthetic exactly, but I can always identify a European-made cabinet a mile away.  Maybe Ikea reins supreme over there?

So awesome!!! What a build. Seeing yours take its time made me feel better about not rushing mine... but I'd never be able to compete with this. You're a true artist :D

As for European designed cabs... they always look distinct. Probably has somethin to do with all the great designs coming out of that side of the globe. The art, architecture and designs are so class... Inspiration at every corner!

The way that sideart ties with the control panel and bezel... what... how? I am in awe.

:applaud:  Excellent job!  It turned out really awesome. Definitely the top build of the year. The design is so interesting, and I love the choices you made. From the CRT choice for playing, LCD for marquee, to the kerfing, to the colours.  Outstanding execution!

Thanks for the shout-out too, the artwork looks great! I didn't have to suggest much, tbh, but you were able to take the few pointers I gave and push the artwork further. Also thanks for being so cool and humble about my advice. Some people don't like to be told what to do, and at times i could come off more acidic with direction, but you were very receptive and easy to advise.

Looking forward to the vid when everything's done!

So many builders do things that make me sad...  you never do.

Top notch.

I love the way the bottom of the side art ends on the plane of the CP - that is just the right thing to have done.  Really gives the sense of an archway to another place, which the frame-breaking claws reinforce.

Thanks for doing more than your part to prop up my precarious faith in humanity.

Wow! Thanks so much guys. I’m very humbled  :notworthy

It’s all up and running now and i gotta admit - i really like it. I actually prefer the way the marquee looks on this to my blip cab. The crt looks great (despite being flat). It’s seriously the best crt pic I’ve ever seen. I’ve got some time tomorrow to put a vid together and i was gonna just show it cycling through some games but if anyone wants to see anything else then post and I’ll include it if i can.

No, I would argue Blip! did the LCD marquee to perfection.

Im not sure Yots, I’ve seen both and having it integrated with the artwork with no border is very cool. And way way cheaper!

I've inexplicably missed this thread - fantastic build!

My design work is 95% done and I planned on doing the trackball mount the same way - glad you tested it out!
Do you have a plexi overlay also?  I think if I use 1/16" Plexi it will work w/o recessing the ball too much.

Very nice work.
Thanks.

Sorry - been away for a while. No plexi. The cpo material is tough laminate so doesn’t need it. The sheet metal i used brings the trackball flush with the panel (its around 1.5mm thick).

I am really pleased with how it’s turned out. Sometimes when you’re looking at stuff in 3D modelling it looks good but in practice doesn’t really work. I made a load of changes to this as i was building it.  The speaker panel was probably the biggest but there were loads of others.

What I’m most pleased about (after the artwork) is how nice it is to look into the cabinet to play a game - it really adds to the immersion. All things considered this was a cheap build. Controls and artwork made up the majority of the cost.

Looking forwards to building a vpin now! (Called FLiP). Called it before anyone else  ;D

Congratulations on your beautiful cab. It is very aesthetically pleasing and I love the fresh color scheme radiating a fresh and cheerful (nicely contrasted with the alien monster bursting out on the side graphs) vibe. Great attention to details and the curved body work looks very impressive, well done.  :applaud:

Another great build. The design isn't for me, there are things about the profile and the front that i'm not a fan of but please don't let that detract how impressed I am by your skill as a builder. Really well done and it looks like you got exactly what you set out for - which is nice to see. I enjoyed following this build very much.

Re: The Invaders: 27 November - Complete + video

I finally got my lazy ass together to complete all the jobs on the cabinet and it’s now complete and working. I’m glad I waited until it was finished before playing it otherwise I don't think it would have ever got done!

The cabinet looks the same as it did in the previous pictures so I’ve uploaded a video of it cycling through games through the frontend (Attract Mode). I use a different frontend layout normally but this was handy just to show how the games look in action.

Yet again - thanks to everyone for the support and kind words.

Fantastic! I skimmed so I probably missed it, but what sort of input are you using for that CRT?

Hi Danny - The TV has an RGB SCART input so I'm using that to connect to a Radeon 5450 graphics card. Windows 7 running Groovymame and super resolutions.

Stellar work. I love it. Overall design, layout, artwork. All of it.
