Batman and Harley Quinn
« on: May 31, 2017, 10:55:57 pm »
So DC has been doing direct to video movies based on various DC universes for years now but this one is special.  Judging by the trailer it is set in the original Batman:  The Animated Series "BruceTimm-verse"!!! The art style matches that of the final season of Batman and Robin and every voice actress except the one that did Harley's voice is returning.  This also marks the first time Bruce Timm has written one of these films since he concluded the final run of Justice League unlimited in 2006.  Could this mark the return of the BruceTimm-verse?

Hey I know some people won't get it, but I'm super excited.

Arleen Sorkin is who voiced Harley in The Animated Series.  Hopefully this does well as Im a fan of this version of the Bat Verse.  I have just been disappointed with the last couple of straight to videos WB has put out.

The Killing Joke was flawed but I really enjoyed it since we got to see it on the big screen.  Hopefully they give this new one a showing in our local theater as well.

I dunno, are there really any interesting Batman stories left to tell?

 :dunno

I think Batman vs Superman was actually marginally better than internet opinion, but ultimately we all know that the bat-mobile will lose a wheel and the Joker gets away.

You really can't beat the theater experience.  We are going to see Rocky III on Tuesday at our local "Brew" theater.

Well the last few years have been flicks based on either the new 52 universe or comic arcs that don't always translate well to motion.

Anything starring Batman has been very good though.  The Batman Returns adaptation (no not the time burton film) was quite good, Justice League Dark was good and Killing Joke was passable.  Yeah I'm sorry, but the art in the Killing Joke book was so good and they did such a poor job in that dept. not to mention the random batsex.

I'm well aware that Arleen Sorkin is Harley.  Chewed someone out in the comments of the video I linked to for saying that Tara Strong is the best Harley....  an imitation is seldom better than the original.  They got the lady from Big Bang Theory to do the voice this time, and it's ok, but I would have preferred Strong or Sorkin.

Nice!  Every time I talk to a theater manager I tell him adamantly that if they show more classic movies I'll come see them.  Took the kids to see The Ten Commandments recently, saw Pretty in Pink with the wife, etc.  Good stuff.

Awesome.  There is no better way to introduce a kid to a new old movie than in the theater.

Absolutely.  When the Independence Day sequel came out we went to a double feature of the original and the new.  The new sucked, of course, but it was awesome to see Independence Day on the big screen again.

You must live in a bigger/better location.  We don't get enough options like that.  I haven't seen the new Independence Day yet but would have gone to that double-feature for sure.

We did get Smokey and the Bandit a few weeks ago but it was a 40 minute drive and we would have had to see it on a Sunday evening so it didn't work out.

I went to go see Ghostbusters on some anniversary.  25th?  It was cool and all but the ticket guy got a little miffed when I said, "are you ---smurfing--- kidding me?" when I found out it was full price admission.  I was with friends and trapped, but I gotta say ordinarily I top out around $5 on old crap.

That's the real downside.  These things tend to be 'special events' and you have to pay full price.  We have a couple of theaters that show Fathom Events here and I follow their schedule closely.  There are a couple of cinema pubs that show an old movie once a week on thursdays but that's an hour away.  Independence Day was a single showing special release event from the distributor that only ran locally in one theater.  And when a Marvel movie comes out they tend to offer multiple screenings of related films.  When Civil War came out they had a ridiculous 24 hour showing of ALL of the modern Marvel movies in order.

None of these places put much effort into promoting this stuff, though.  Best way I have found to track them is by following the companies on Facebook.

So I watched it tonight.  It wasn't what I was expecting exactly, but it's pretty darn good.  I expected it to be more on the light side, but not full on parody.  It reminds me of that later BTAS episode with the creeper in it.... lots of jokes and Batman and Robin.. err... I mean Nightwing, actually showing a personality beyond brooding.  So long as you don't expect a masterpiece like the "heart of ice" episode, I think you will all be pleasantly surprised.  It's a hell of a lot better than that killing joke adaptation anyway.

The killing joke was ---smurfing--- terrible. Like PBJ I got roped into going with friends and didnt know it was a $20 ticket (same price as the ---smurfing--- DVD)

Batman Unlimited:Animal Instincts - meh
Batman v Robin- I really liked it
Batman Assault on Arkham - this is what suicide squad should have copied
Batman Bad Blood - really good bat story that didn't focus on batman
Justice League: Gods and Monsters - meh
Justice League Dark - It was entertaining  but should have just been called "Constantine the animated movie"
Justice League v Teen Titans - much better than I thought it'd be I like how its a continuation of other animated movies in this series
Justice League: Flashpoint - one of the best animated comic movies ever.
Justice League :WAR - pretty good
Justice League : Throne of Atalntis - direct sequel to WAR, if you liked WAR you'll like this one.
Son of Batman - really good, required watching to set up later movies in the series like Batman V robin and the teen titan ones
Superman Batman : Public enemies - kinda corny but worth a watch
Teen Titas Judas Contract - I thought this was really good too and it teases a new titan

I think thats everything from 2014 till now.

Yeah, it's hard to keep up.  But if those are any gauge I would say Harley Quinn is better that JL Dark but not quite as good as Flashpoint.  Even if you don't care for the jokes/plot it's worth it alone to see a DC animated movie that's well drawn and doesn't look like garbage.  It's a true return to form.... looks like the later episodes of TAS only crisper and without animation errors... basically what the show would look like if it were still on the air today.

I love the graphic novel, but hated the animated version. My wife watched it with my friend and I. She was like, "That's what you guys were hyped up for?"
It was not good.

Watched it last night. Nightwig seduction, fart jokes, homophobic innuendoes, pointless plots, Debbie Harry, batman tapping to music, it was a tangled mess of utter tripe.  I enjoyed it.

semi related bump, watched Batman vs Two-Face  it was basically an animated movie based on Batman 66. It was super cheesy/corny and right in line with the show but over all I wasn't a fan. William Shatner was abysmal as two face and it was really distracting how bad of a voice actor he is. It was still cool that Adman, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar reprised their roles ; and specifically that Adam West got to be batman one more time.
