Placing a Motherboard onto wood

Hey, after a few years of lurking, here and having a 2 player kit sitting in my closet, I finally got off ---my bottom--- and got some wood to start my project. I really wanted to do something big for my first cab, but I realize that's what has been holding me back.

So anyway, I'm going to try and build a 2 player Bar top cab. I'll be using an old PC to run the thing, and my question is, how do I mount the Motherboard inside the cab? Are there spacers or something I can use to hold it up?

Does my power supply need to be lifted off the wood?

Your power supply does not need to be lifted.

For wood, I use PCB standoffs that screw into the wood.

Those would mean I could put the mobo or pcb on the sides instead of the bottom.

Well maybe not the mobo since this is a bar top and the monitor still needs to be mounted.

Would I be able to use something like these and screw them into MDF?

The thread geometry is good for metal, but not for MDF -- it's very easy to strip/pulp MDF.

You might be able to use those spacers with threaded inserts or tee nuts.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, I just wanted to double check. Those types of standoffs are much easier to find.

I use these in all my projects. This is what I do:

• Drill wood screws in the positions where you want the standoffs.
• Remove the screws and put dabs of wood glue in all the holes.
• Put correct screws into the standoffs and use those to screw them into the wood holes.
• Remove screws and gently fasten your motherboard.

When the glue sets it's a bulletproof solution.

Cut up the tube of a Bic pen that you stole from work. 

Use those as standoffs for the motherboard, attach with woodscrews to cabinet.

I have done this.  It works.  I have also drilled holes in the wood and used zip ties through the screw holes in the board.
