Optiplex's can anything be done with them?
« on: May 23, 2017, 01:43:14 pm »
I have recently been given an Optiplex 745 and two Optiplex gx620.

The 745 has 4 gb of ram and a decent card
One 620 has 3 gb the other has 2 gb both don't have much in the card department.

I have parts that will soupe these up a bit but in the end will they do the job of emulating classic consoles to PSX era and mame?

the optiplex name has been recycled so many times by Dell, it's really hard to say. if you can post the service code on the back it would narrow it down considerably.

"decent card" doesn't describe much. I would say an  HD7850 or a 750ti is decent... but really depends specifically what you want to do with it.

I believe these are the service codes. I don't know if the internals will match due to they were university computers.

Here is one of the graphics cards I have to use for one of them if possible.

Those are usually running Pentium D / Pentium 4's.  They should be great for anything up until 3D fighting games in the 90s.  As for PSX, probably not but you can test it out.

Is there a cheap CPU replacement that would work well for mame and this motherboard?

Optiplex 745 is a 2006 model which will support a Core 2 Duo E6600. With that cpu you will be able to run all 2D consoles and games in mame.

Optiplex gx620 is an older 2005 model which will only support Pentium D. Expect to only run 80's games with that.
