Another Cocktail Arcade Build

Hey All,

so this is my first arcade build its nothing fancy very basic. i am making this cocktail as a gift for my brother, although its not done yet it sure has been fun to mess and play with.

Small criticism... looks like that plywood didn't take stain well.  Some stain conditioner first might have helped you out there. 

Other than that, nice work, good solid craftsmanship.

As I'm still new to this craft and beginning wood working, could you expand upon what you mean by "didn't take well" and what the conditioner would do? Thanks

So the stain looks uneven in places.  There are some darker splotches, and very light places as well (like some of the grain). 

Conditioner will get down into the grain and just helps the stain looks more even & uniform. 

Not all wood needs conditioner.  I usually test a scrap piece before staining to see if needs conditioner or not.

Gotchya, yeah a few places took more than others. The front of the control panels I had to remove most of the grain panel don't look terrific either. The lighting of my workshop does not help at all either. Thank you for observation, I'll keep that in mind when I'm doing my upright.

Quick question I forgot to add to the title. Since I used a router to bevel the screen area should I paint it black of leave it stained?

Man, stained wood looks just so classy IMHO. This is going to be a really fancy cab when it's finished.

My only criticism, besides the stain which Haruman already covered, is the cup holder.....  WTH do you need a cup holder for.  This is a cocktail table.  You put your drinks ON a table, hence cocktail table.  You'll have enough bezel area to put a drink on the table and still be able to see the screen.  Rule #2: Don't make things more complicated than they need to be.

You are absolutely right, I changed the design later without the cup holder since it was silly. I always get too excited and forget the KISS principle.

I'm skeptical that two people will ever want to play a two player horizontal game like that.  With a PC you can run two rotated images at the same time that'll work with the vertical controls.

Wood burn a five pointed star and write "come and take it-Cade" on the side and I'd buy it.

The horizontal two player is quite comfortable. I'm 6' + and there's plenty of room. Plus this is primarily going to be played and used by children with the occasional adult.

I was thinking more along the line like biggusdickus on the side with a come and pull it beneath.

This is the first coat of black paint for the bezel. Improvement?

I was pondering painting the edges black too since I'm not t-molding it.

How are your control panels fastened to the side--wood screws and glue or something else?  Just curious as I have been waffling on a two player cocktail with side by side (on the side) controls.

It is by biscuit. Using a plate joiner measuring two areas then cutting a small chunk out of there to stick this biscuit with some glue. Makes a very strong joint. And! This would the perfect reason to add the tool to the arsenal.

What's your thoughts on painting the rest of the edges where t-molding traditionally would be?

I have painted the edges of my first cab. Lots of masking off to do, and in the end it looks like ... paint. I used edge-banding on my second cab, ironed it on and, since it was wider than the cab's edge,  cut off the excess with a knife. This looks way better than paint, but it takes a little bit of practice to cut the excess off without damaging the wood.
