Speakers and CRT's - How close is too close? Go Shielded?
« on: May 07, 2017, 06:42:29 pm »
I am looking to add some speakers to my lowboy build and am having trouble finding a pair of shielded speakers locally and the ones I want to use is not shielded. I am curious about the use of non-shielded speakers in cabs, as I have seen several pictures of cabs with them in use. The link below shows what I am building and how close the speakers would be to the monitor. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

It really depends on the setup. In your pic, the speakers are mounted with the magnet away from the CRT and with a wooden panel in between, so that would be alright.

Actually, I've found in those old LAI Lowboys that the original speakers did affect the monitors. The way to go will be to install and run the screen, and move the speakers into place to see what happens to a white screen, and to a white grid.

Yeah this is a hassle... I will try with shielded drivers, even though I am thinking that the way they face exposes the least shielded side to the monitor...

You can go smaller drivers too. Something like the tweeters speakers from a Logitech X-230 will work well - you open them and mount the white panels underneath over the old holes. The sub also produces very little magnetic field above it, so you can mount it on the cab floor. You can test things with an app for your mobile phone as well, if your phone has a compass. I'd do that before buying, if you can get your hands on stuff.

Thanks. I am pretty certain I know what I will go with now, just gotta pony up if I want to get exactly what I want. Coming from an audiophile background, I want to be a bit snobbish for the purpose of documenting some neat stuff that may be able to help others in their builds. We shall see how that comes together  ::)
