NSM ICON Internet jukebox Should I purchase?
« on: May 04, 2017, 12:11:38 pm »
Was looking at a DIY build and found a cheep NSM Icon Internet jukebox. I would like to purchase however, concerned if I can update software for home usage. My other option for almost the same price is NSM icon case with touchscreen monitor only. Love to get some feedback on the better purchase and recommendations on the project.

NSM internet (a.k.a. downloader style) jukeboxes, just like Rowe-Ami, Rockola, etc are only licensed for commercial use not homes. So you would never be able to access the music library. You'd have a giant doorstop.

Shipping something from the U.S. to Canada for repair/exchange?  Please use USPS to avoid (additional?/excessive?) shipping charges.  PM me if you have any questions.

Thanks for the feedback. I am going to attempt to purchase just the case and I'll check you the suggestions for building it myself.

yes, unless you are an operator registered with nsm (or rowe or touchtunes for that fact) you cannot operate the jukebox and they will remotely shut the machine down and lock it out from being used.

"Oh" you say, "I'll just not connect it online and that will work."

Not exactly. Most internet jukeboxes will disable themselves if they are unable to "call home" within a certain amount of time of their last contact with the server.

With these internet connected units, about the only thing you can do is what ed has mentioned... dump new software on it. most of these units use standard touchscreen controllers and the software for them is available on maker's website (3M/general touch/ELO etc.)

the only issue you may run into is if they've used a custom DSP (Digital signal processor) for the audio output. then you might as well use your own motherboard and go from there.

I've met people that had these internet jukeboxes in their home... is there some rogue world of custom firmware out there?

Or did they just convince the jukebox company that they were an operator?

i know with touchtunes, if your juke uses too many of the free service credits in a month they will charge you.

maybe whichever one you seen running offline was one no longer supported by its company anymore (or the company doesn't exist anymore)and had an offline patch sent out to it before the server was killed off. I think zymeta did this before it was killed off.

Not strictly true, you can just install your own PC and run your own software. I have a sound leisure dual screen video surfer running E-Touch fine. As long as you can get the drivers for the touchscreen you can install any PC in there you want and run any of the windows based jukebox software. I hooked up the coin mech on mine as well with a keyboard encoder but that is obviously optional.

So while you cannot use the NSM software you can still use the cab.
