GroovyMAME vs GroovyArcade
« on: May 03, 2017, 11:25:37 am »
Sorry another noob question.  What are the advantages of using GroovyArcade over GroovyMAME (if any).  Why is the Linux version better than the Windows version?

Right now I think Windows/GM is ahead, due to lower input latency. I haven't really been keeping up with this though.

I'm not sure if Linux would give you  faster machine overall if you want to run 3d games windows chugs on. However, on Linux you can just install the modelines you need, you don't require crt_emudriver and a compatible Radeon card or similar solution for 15kHz and/or extra modes.

Plus windows has nice and shiny front ends (hyperspin) which some people like
Whereas i don't think Linux has anything like that

but if you know how to use Linux and don't want a fancy FE then up to you :)

Apart from Attract Mode?
http://attractmode.org/download.html

I'm not sure what HyperSpin is like these days, but when I abandoned it for Attract it hadn't had an update for about a year and Attract was way better. You can also use it on multiple platforms including Windows. :)

There is also RetroArch which is more than a front end, and probably other options too that I'm not aware of.

I dumped Hyperspin for attractmode ages ago. So much easier to setup and get going.

I use the Linux version (groovyarcade) at the moment and don't really notice any latency. It may be there but it's just so easy to get a machine up and running. Would love to see the difference now that GroovyArcade 2017 is out.

Windows MAME has the advantage that you can use multiple keyboards or mice independently and WinUAE is amazing if you're into Amigas. Other than that, once you have Attract Mode set up you might not be able to tell the difference. You can get rid of all the loading screens and use auto login to hide Windows completely.  However, GroovyArcade is free AND cool, Windows is neither of those things.

Isn't there an additional frame of input lag in Linux due to SDL page flipping?
On a scale of fakeness, from more genuine to more fake, we'd have:

1.- Plastic plants (cf. Fake Plastic Trees)
2.- Inflatable dolls
3.- Arcade cabinets with LCD monitors
