Donkey Kong & Bubble Bobble Bartop thoughts!
« on: April 25, 2017, 06:32:48 pm »
Howdy!

I've recently launched my project http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,154064.0.html and am thinking about artwork. I really love classic designs. Any thoughts on some type of donkey kong and bubble bobble hybrid? Here are some pics I really like. I know it's a little crazy, but anyone think it can be done well? I'll take any suggestions!

this one is a little too delicious

Here is something I threw together to see if the concept could work. The blue seems pretty harsh. Ignore the green bars, they will be covered. Suggestions please!

I think cabinet art looks nicest when it appears to come from one single artist. The DK and BB art are pretty different styles, and don't mesh well to my taste. A single art theme would look nicer.

In my mind this is not going to work.
But throw together some ideas and see what they look like,

Either of the side art pieces look fine individually. Personally, I wouldn't combine them.

The white background on the marquee looks more like an unfinished area than an intentionally white background.

despite all the naysayers I like the combo of the two, but need to make it Donkey Bobble and/or Bubble Kong.  j/k I do think they can work together and be just fine. the earlier version of the marquee looked better imho without the white stripe down the middle, although one thing you may want to try to get the artwork to blend better is lose the gradients on the BB art, put in solid fills like on DK, and don't have the two BB guys (whatever they are) be the same size on the marquee, make one smaller set off to add some depth like on the DK side, and maybe add another BB character on the marque for balance, small though.
My Projects:
MisSpent Youth a Vigolix bartop,  Little Bastard a rotating tablet/display bartop,
Pin-Dog a mini pin-cab on vpforums.org  Star Wars a wedgehead pincab on vpinball.com

Pick one game and go with it. When you start to jumble stuff up, it looks like you can't make up your mind. If you're going to mash up two totally different games, hell, you might as well go full collage.

Right now it looks like they are both the same side - also if you do go that direction be sure the proper side lines up with the proper side of the marquee !

This topic is bumping now! Thanks for all the suggestions. The truth is I really cannot make up my mind. I also like the collage idea, but I have not really seen any I like online, and from what I've tried to do on my own I don't have the skills to have any cohesiveness. They are just a bunch of pictures floating in space.

-To the point of both being the right side. Thats right! I'm just going to make both designs and hope that maybe during that process I'll make up my mind.

-Also an excellent point to make sure that if I do the two theme marquee to make sure the correct sides line up.

-I think/hope I can figure out the gradient thing. I assume it would just result in a solid color?

How about the combo name of Bonky Bong? No good? How about Dogble Koble?

Here is some collage inspirations. Any type of feedback is useful! I don't know what the hell I am doing. Also, I agree a solid color would look nicer, so I'll get on that regardless of which I choose. I'm not married to anything, just throwing ideas out there!

collage marquee (no background decided)

Collage Marquee with random blue background

I cannot say you are wrong. I just love a lot of these things and have trouble picking something. I'm hoping that even just creating stuff will help me pick.

As far as making it look good that'll be the challenge for me. The DK and BB I created myself but had help with resources and just copied the composition and such (especially with the DK).

Whatever happened to unique names and custom designs? Why must every new cab seem to be a homage to some classic that already exists? I want more Vertical Retraces and Mission Controls. At least  Chito's monstrosity has a custom name and theme.

I want more Vertical Retraces and Mission Controls.

You seem to forget that this has absolutely nothing to do with what you want, it's about what the Op wants, and if he wants to build an homage to an old game then that's cool, has it been done by countless others? yes, there's a reason.  If he wants to build a collage, well that's not so great in yours or most other people opinions but it is his to build and use and enjoy. There is a difference between constructive criticism and telling someone what they are trying to do is crap.

Thank you for the lecture. Anything else you want to tell me to do?

I  mean, God forbid we should try to plant the seed of thinking of an original theme, especially when the OP is clearly so undecided on what he wants to do...

This is like a flashback to my childhood. I would do something and my little brother would get blamed.

I was far more critical, yet Yots gets lectured.

I didn't really feel anyone was being critical or insulting. I want the arcade to feel and look like a late 80s & 90s arcade, and while I am sure it can be done really well with an original design, it's nothing I am capable of, so I'm just trying to go with characters and designs that make be feel good, but also don't look like ass.

The tips from BorgDog about the gradient and solid fill and resizing are really helpful, and I'll get on that soon!

As for full collage, a lot of times I find myself in the more is more category, but I don't think there is any way I could make something I'd be happy with. I think once I work on the CP I'll get some clarity. Or not.

Full collages are *really* hard to do. It would take a serious amount of skill (and time/money) to get something you like. Believe me - i tried and I've been using photoshop for nigh on 20 years.

If you're totally sold on the bubble bobble / donkey Kong then then just chuck an artwork on each side and split the control panel/ marquee in the middle with some sort of divider. It won't look great but it's the best you're gonna get with the 2 contrasting art styles.

Alternatively, look up some of the other Bartop art and see if you can use that instead. There's loads out there and you can probably buy it pre designed and printed.

TLDR: what you're looking for cannot be done unless you spend big money commissioning someone to do it.

Hire a professional artist to design the side art to integrate the two games. That is the only way it doesn't turn out looking like donkey  :censored:.

You could post an inquiry in the artwork section on this forum. You could inquire at a place like deviantart.com. it's not cheap and it takes time, but in my opinion it is worth it. That is totally up to you. Good luck with whatever you decide to do.

My take on the marquee. I would add black outlines to all characters like the one the robot has, but I'm unable to do that.
So just pretend that they are there  :)

My take on the marquee. I would add black outlines to all characters like the one the robot has, but I'm unable to do that.
So just pretend that they are there  :)

Thanks for the feedback! I have no idea how you were able to throw that together so fast. Flipping the mario and changing the spacing of the Donkey Kong would take some time as it is all one object. I'd have to go back to the vectors and try to import them separately.

As to your point of adding a black outline like the robot and the bubbles have, I hadn't even noticed, but its a great point. I have no idea how to do that though. I'll do some googling and see if there is an easy way to accomplish it.

Also I should re-mention that the top and bottom 1/2 inch will be covered, so I don't have much extra room unless I shrink my existing DK stuff.
