8 way joystick, 2 buttons : attack, jump (both together uses magic power, but drains health).

Check out this website for details on items and such.

Magic Sword: Heroic Fantasy, is a side-scrolling fantasy arcade game released by Capcom in 1990. The game casts the player as a hero who must fight his way through a mystical tower in order to save the world. The player can use a sword, axe or magic, and can also rescue and recruit potential allies of various character classes, each of which has his or her own special abilities. Three years earlier, Capcom had released the similar Black Tiger in 1987.

One of the first games I beat as soon as I had unlimited credits.  Probably second in line after Space Harrier.

Impressive game. I don't think I've ever played it, beyond 2 minutes to test & set it up on my cabinet. Nice pick. Difficult & confusing, but quality gaming!

Played for 45 minutes last night, got a little farther than before (made it to floor 2!), saw some new enemies, saw some new buddies, figured out a *little* more how this game works.

But my scores were all lower than my previous submission.

Is everybody starting on floor 1?
Who's the favorite buddy? I think I like the archer best.

I know this game is interesting & impressive, but I also know that this is the sort of game that I'll never figure out...though I do enjoy it.

I bookmarked a YouTube video to watch later...not that it will help me any...

Tips?

* Don't switch buddies, but instead keep freeing (and touching) the one you already have to build up his level. Red hearts do this too.
* Wait to fire weapon until your power bar is red, so you have a projectile. The blue potion makes this bar go up faster
* You can spam melee attacks no problem if you have the gauntlet. It does high damage.
* Never use the damn special power (both buttons pressed together) if you can help it
* For the first dragon fight, stand on the platform and hit him long distance as he approaches. He'll stop flying toward you and hover so you can hit him multiple times.
* there is a hidden chest on the very first level with a red heart in it. jump to the right off the last cliff and swing (right after the yellow bear appears)

302,774. Didn't want to play this, got bored, gave it a whirl. I don't like the random item spawns, points you can get range from 900 to 100,000 points. I don't like to have to get a good and also lucky run together.

The first boss can be hacked down in seconds by standing directly in front of him and bashing away. If you stand on the right spot, he will try to breathe fire, for some reason abandon the thought and then try to roast you again, ad infinitum.

There's a secret chest at the end of the second stage (stage, not floor), just hit the wall and collect 4,000 points.

On the floor with the Easter Island heads that come to life, jump over them (use diagonal jump) and hit them from behind for a big coin bonus. This can be tricky if there's a grunt walking near them also.

Every time I try to get the lizard or knight henchman I die almost immediately after. I'm safer with the high level thief.

> Don't switch buddies, but instead keep freeing (and touching) the one you already have to build up his level. Red hearts do this too.
Sometimes, a buddy seems to start at level 2(?) Last night was the first time I played & got far enough to see a buddy repeat. I got the archer up to level 6. Yay me.

> Never use the damn special power (both buttons pressed together) if you can help it
Why not? Is there a downside?

> For the first dragon fight, stand on the platform and hit him long distance as he approaches. He'll stop flying toward you and hover so you can hit him multiple times.
This didn't make sense till last night...when I got to the first dragon...yes, he was quite easy. I took only 2 hits.

> there is a hidden chest on the very first level with a red heart in it. jump to the right off the last cliff and swing (right after the yellow bear appears)
I sometimes saw it flickering in the tree but didn't realize I could reach it.

> The first boss can be hacked down in seconds by standing directly in front of him and bashing away. If you stand on the right spot, he will try to breathe fire, for some reason abandon the thought and then try to roast you again, ad infinitum.
Didn't work for me--I took a few hits, but not too many--I often take more hits running around fighting.

> There's a secret chest at the end of the second stage (stage, not floor), just hit the wall and collect 4,000 points.
I actually knew this!!!  =O

> On the floor with the Easter Island heads that come to life, jump over them (use diagonal jump) and hit them from behind for a big coin bonus. This can be tricky if there's a grunt walking near them also.
Not even going to attempt this...

Yep, it will cost you one life bar.

> there is a hidden chest on the very first level with a red heart in it. jump to the right off the last cliff and swing (right after the yellow bear appears)
I sometimes saw it flickering in the tree but didn't realize I could reach it.
The flickering occurs if you have the blue orb equipped, this reveals hidden items.

You have to stand at the right distance, I can't always do it perfectly, but most of the time I get hit only once and kill him in a few seconds.

> On the floor with the Easter Island heads that come to life, jump over them (use diagonal jump) and hit them from behind for a big coin bonus. This can be tricky if there's a grunt walking near them also.

It's doable, but it WILL cost you health. The question is if 8000 points is worth it ...

368,397. Got lucky. First I got the bracelet that doubles the points you get, then I got an 80,000 points item.
