I can't argue with the cost difference but I'm just not interested in figuring it all out. Looking to wrap this build quickly and I'd be lucky get 3 hrs a week dedicated to it right now

lol...you just put it together, there was a big argument on who thought of it first....virtuapin marked it up, and pin2dmd countered and made it affordable and easy to assemble for the DIY community.

Plus its not really plug and play there are little nuances you have to deal with per table to get that thing to work.

But your right the kit guys make a killing due to customer convenience demands...

oh dont make the mistake and feed 12v to that thing, you think leds = 12v in an array like that, but it takes 5v.

Dead pixel right out of the box :(  emailed virtuapin to see if they'll replace it.  Dunno though. We'll see

The Simpsons Virtual pinball
« Reply #47 on: March 20, 2017, 07:34:26 am »
So I'm having difficulty settling on how to proceed with the back box.  I've got all the components.

DMD
4" speakers
Xbox 360 Kinect
26" tv

I was thinking of mounting a big 1/2" thick piece of MDF because that's perfect thickness  for the mounts on the DMD and Speakers  but it pushes the tv screen back a 1/2" because I dont want the frame or buttons or power lamp to show on the tv.   Any tips/suggestions out there? Maybe I should router a space for the tv frame to get the screen more flush with the face of the backboard. Or are people doing these in multiple pieces?  I was also thinking I would cut an access panel in to the back of the back box to access for servicing all of these components

And that kinect moves when it needs to be calibrated.  I'm wondering if I dare mount it into the backglass board will it still be able to work.  Any of you have experience with this?

That's one of the issues of a vpin, your backbox has to be custom.

Your gonna need to route yourself a bezel to the specs of your tv screen so only the screen shows.

I routed out my dmd and kinect and placed plexi in front of both.

This is why i recommended the xboxone kinect it has a larger viewing area and doesnt move during calibration, so it doesnt need to be at a tilt, and is easier to mount as its a perfect rectangle.

Yes you will need an access door to service your components and you might add a fan to that door to move the heat the TV and dmd will create.

I can take photos if you wanna see my setup.

I'm right there with you. I've moved on to the sound system, nudge, and button wiring for now.  I got all of that mounted too.  At the risk of losing the ability to play some games I've decided not to add any visible additional buttons.  I stuck an "exit" button under the front of the cabinet and another extra button for who knows.   Things like the iron man table that has a button you have to use to select the music at the beginning of gameplay

Also for the time being.  (Hopefully very short term.  I've taped  a couple arcade buttons for players 1-2 coins as I don't have any coin mechs.  I had planned to rob some out of a coin door held on to  from an Atari pole position cab I gave away but the mechs don't seem to be compatible.  Will have to order mechs. $$$. I really just did this as placeholders for the wiring

And here are some pics.  Yes it looks absolutely horrid in this state.  And you can see that I'm so cheap that I've opted to use speaker wire for all the buttons.  At least I was able to rock out with the new sound system while making daisy chains for the grounds.

I'm just trying to get electronic things in place so I can do some cable management  ran out of time tonight gotta get to bed so I though I'd just post where I'm at. Not that it's presentable lol.

That backbox setup is temporary. Just used a piece I had cut and failed on to help me visualize what I want on the next attempt

Will I still have analog plunger on other games if I do that?  Will test.  Or I could try mapping to the "start game" button

Finished wiring game controls, testing of the controller went well.

Still lots to do:
Power to cabinet
More cable management
Proper backglass
Surround for the 39" flatscreen
Proper cabinet glass
Source and install coin mechs
Power for coin return lamps

I got a new idea for the backbox that I think will look good. Will try to get that together when i have time ...hopefully this week.

Damn I don't have a launch button :(  I am now realizing that there doesn't seem to be a way around having a launch button.  Any ideas?  And how do you map more than one thing to any one button I can't seem to do it in FP will only allow one function per joystick button.  I ended up using that "spare" button as power buttons for my PC

A lot of measuring, cutting, routering (routing?), and sanding... and painting. And done!

The back box is most of the way there need to touch up some paint on the cabinet in the corner seems but I am very happy with this.

Launch button added:

Filling in the gaps around the playfield.  I was thinking it might be nice to have a "fire" button on the filler piece just above the breaker bar but then I would have to get a hole drilled in the glass.
I am considering using this plexi/lexan. (I dont know what it is I found it in my garage left behind by the previous home owner

Any opinions? Advice?  How to cut this and if I can get a 1-1/8" button hole in it without cracking it

Cheers.

Not sure where you live Lowe's or home Depot will cut it for you or find a table saw and use a finishing blade to cut the hole use a step down drill bit (Google)
