Just finished it. Took around 100 hours but still missed 30 shrines. Enjoyed every minute of it but defo feel like I'm done with it now. They could have definitely compressed the map a little bit. It takes bloody ages to get anywhere and endlessly walking around looking for shrines got boring.

Think i used a shield about 3 times. Didn't realise you could lock onto enemies until about 3/4 of the way through. A good game though - probably the first Zelda that I've really enjoyed.

Re: weapons, this game really forces you to think of creative ways to solve encounters. You could go in slashing everything, but you can also win battles more efficiently than that, especially later when you get more abilities.
I usually keep 1 weapon slot empty or with a crummy weapon, then  try to kill an enemy then use its weapon drop to finish the rest. I only use the marginally good weapons when I have to.

A good game though - probably the first Zelda that I've really enjoyed.

Link to the Past and Link between worlds are still my fave Zelda games.

Whilst I did love the original games my faves would be - Link to the Past, BOTW. Skyward Sword, Although if they want to remake the 1st game as a more open world experience like BOTW I would be all over that like a bad rash :)

The problem with Between Worlds is I'm currently stuck halfway through the game, looking for the exact right crack to make progress.  I have spent 2-3 hours trying to find it, and gave up.  It's a good game but definitely lacks some polish.  The whole item rental thing is stupid, too.  I just ground enough coins to buy everything.

Zelda II is awesome.  It's revisionist history people that say it sucked.  Beat it again last year.... still holds up and unlike LTTP isn't isn't a cop-out remake of the first game.

Its perfectly fine that we have our preferred games and that they arent the same.  Its not revisionist history , I didn't like it as a kid, but I powered through it because all the cool kids did it.  I gave it another go when I was older but couldnt make myself finish it. I dont think I could give it a 3rd go, there are other better Zelda games I'd rather replay. I actually replayed LttP on my OG Xbox last year too

Maybe sucked was too strong of a word, so I'll say Zelda II was too much a departure from everything I liked about Zelda 1. Not a fan of the side scrolling platforming aspect or the limited number of lives. Dark Link was pretty cool though.

I never knew anyone that had Zelda 2 until the aughts.  This is despite everyone having an NES and a copy of Zelda 1.  I don't have an opinion one way or the other, but it clearly wasn't even in the same realm of popularity.

Not sure what you mean.  I had it back in the day and almost everyone I knew had it.

*edit*

Here you go:

http://vgsales.wikia.com/wiki/The_Legend_of_Zelda

As you can see, it didn't sell as much as the original, but it sold nearly as much as LTTP, so I wouldn't exactly call it obscure.

I suggest you re-read what pbj said.  He said it didn't have the same realm of popularity and nobody he knew had it.  That denotes obscurity.  It was quite popular at the time.  All the talk of the playground, ect.  Like I said originally.... revisionist history.  Sure if you compare it to the 20+ Zelda games that have been released since it might not be your favorite, but it was the first sequel, and a rather good one at that.  The sales figures don't lie.  It's like when people start this nonsense about SMB 2 (USA) sucking.  That thing was awesome and almost everybody loved it when it first came out.  Both got high review scores in various magazines when they came out as well.

I've broke a few shrines, but not that elaborately.  I've had more fun making myself a flying mine cart and stuff like that.

He said he didnt know anyone who had it, the sample size is relegated the town he lived in, reduced to the people he knew in said town. That in no way denotes obscurity, it just shows a lack of popularity in a very small cross sample.  Most people I knew had 1, 2, or both so I guess that even's his statement out. If we're going to argue semantics, if the game was obscure he wouldnt have know it existed to know that his friends didnt have it.

PS: Mario 2 was fun, ending sucked though.

I'm not even sure what we're arguing about anymore.   :dunno

All I know is that in the 90s nobody said, "hey, let's play Zelda 2" like they periodically did with Zelda 1.  The last "classic game flea market" I went to had like 5:1 Zelda 1 to Zelda 2 cartridges.  Maybe it sold well, but it didn't have legs.

All those "shrine breaks" are from poor level design.  That's what happens when you model a 3D space on a 2D map.

And I actually like SMB 2 (US) quite a bit...  First thing we played through on the Famicom Mini....

I'm not suggesting that it is as popular as the original Zelda... few games are, but you are acting like it isn't even in the same ballpark, which I assure you is incorrect.  Go back and look at those sales numbers again.  I would link to some of the glowing reviews from back in the day, but I'm not really sure where you would look that up.

Anyway, the reason it is so good is the fact that it isn't like every other Zelda game out there.  The oddballs are the most fun, like wind waker, or skyward sword with it's nearly linear gameplay.

So Im just going to ignore all that ---That which is odiferous and causeth plants to grow--- up there and get back to the subject at hand., the movie Dunkirk.

Just kidding.   So I'm in Zora's domain and I have to go get 20 shock arrows, man that red headed ---smurf--- Lynel is a literal MONSTER! Luckily I snagged 1 in town and bunch on the way up.
For some reason the game's autosave where I died 2 seconds after seeing him, has him immediately noticing me and in a death loop. I'm going to go back a save, put on my stealth clothes and eat some stealth food, then cross my fingers. I ended up looking on line to see if I *HAD* to kill it and it looks like I dont need to but some people can pull it off.

I had a really funny loop where I almost killed him, I climbed on a rock then leaping slashing him as he was going to shoot arrows. Did it a couple times but when he actually got the shot off I was deader than fried chicken.

Its times like this I regret getting all stamina power ups and no extra heart containers. I should probably go shrine hunting and take a break from the Zora Story part. I feel severely under powered but I doubt better gear would put much of a dent in this guy but the extra hearts might let me survive turning tail and running.

Yeah you kind of screwed up.  You should get a heart, then a stamina, then a heart ect....  There's that little "evil" shrine statue that'll let you exchange your stamina and hearts though.

If the Zora arc is your first beast then you can't kill the Lynel (easily).  Even after you've done all the shrines they aren't easily to beat without the 60+ weapons and the shield power.

There isn't a lot of direction with which beast to tackle first, which is a doubel edged sword. Its a lot of freedom mixed with a lot of frustration. I wondered really far to the south west and found the town that doesnt allow men in but when the beast farted a lightning bolt and 1 shot me I teleported out and ended up on the Zora Path.   I thought this was the intended "first beast" because getting to the Zora people and the dungeon in the zora town were cakewalks.

Is there a different beast I should go after first?

No you are going in the right order.  You'll encounter most of the scary monsters long before you can actually beat them.  You're supposed to run like a coward that early in the game.  I believe the "correct" order is fish people, bird people, rock people, ganon ladies.  When you beat the salamander divine beast you'll get a shield that really helps with the lynels.

No, the Zora beast is a good place to start at the beginning.  And the choice of your spiritual upgrades doesn't really matter generally. Most people go with full-on stamina for a few of the starting upgrades, then rely on cooking health boosting food for the tough fights.

Oh, I did: fish, desert, rock, then left bird for last. I kinda wish I did bird earlier, 'cause the ability you get would have helped a lot in the early game.

Going back a save was the ticket!
No idea why I "needed" 20 arrows, got the job done in like 4 or 5. The puzzles on the elephant were meh at best, the boss fight was redonkulously easy considering the Lynels were rape on wheels.

Got my whole 3 piece Zora set, which Im sure is useless now that Im done with Kevin Costner's Waterworld.

I use the Zora suit a lot actually. That, and the Climbing set are the two I swap to mainly. Barbarian gear is for the tough fights.

But yeah, elephant is the entry-level. Some of the other beasts are more clever in design. I really liked the Rito beast (flying) the best, followed by the desert one.

The zora suit is extremely useful.  Among other things it lets you attack while in water, which is quite useful in a few areas.  Swimming up waterfalls is a easy way to skip most of hyrule castle as well.

Ive gone off shrine exploring, it'll up my stamina and give me more fast travel points.  Catching an elk or whatever was kinda lame. I lucked out and it started to rain which I guess lets you sneak up on animals better, and pinned one against a rock and road it to the designated circle. I need to start climbing more towers so I can stop walking around a black map.

All the divine beasts are mine now, the air gust and "extra life" are the only skills worth having. Stamina bar is maxed out, so Ive been shrine hunting for hearts. Sadly still have at least 2 towers to climb to unlock the full map.  Weapons still suck but I stumbled back across the korok seed guy and now I can hold 2 more. CEMU is much more stable now , so I can play now without worring about crashes.  Still kinda stuck on one shrine that uses the tilt controls (3 balls) , I did the other 2 with no problem using my mouse but I even tried to link the tilt function of my phone and I still couldnt do it.

Don't worry, those puzzles were a PITA even with the wii u controller :)  Proper frustrating.

Found the last fairy, had to warp back to gerudo town and sell a buncha diamonds n stuff to raise the 10K to "unlock" the giant fairy. Got most of my gear to 3, some to 4. Some stuff requires items I havent seen yet like Star crumbs or something. My guardian gear wil be staying at 2/3 for a WHILE.  I hope doing all this side quest garbage is worth getting that lightning helm.

Yeah it's pretty dumb.  The only weapon that really matters is the master sword.

So lightning helm was worth the extra work, solving the thundara plateau was easier with it, and so is picking on the lightning dragon. For the record I went : fish, desert, rock, bird and maxed out Stamina before adding any hearts.

Spoiler, when you pull the master sword you need 13 hearts and food doesnt count, whomp whomp.I was 1 short so I atea super special steak and the game didnt care, lol. I even finished the first master word trial and have a slightly less terrible one.

Im kind of over the shrine part so Ive been hunting down the memories then I think I'll go put Calamity Ganon down.

Note when you beat Calamity Ganon the game is over. It doesnt start you back into the world, just your current save points.

I focused my efforts into getting the town built

Yeah once you build your house the builder guy will leave and start building a small town, you help gather resources and people to move in. This will open up shops that will have new items. Google "From the ground up" for more info.

Yeah that's a fun one.  Even has a little story and a happy ending if you finish everything.

Found the house, walked past it a brazllion times. Fully upgraded it and hung some ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- on the wall. I had the same issue with the builder as I do the great fairy, just let me upgrade ---steaming pile of meadow muffin--- in bulk, I dont need a cut scene every.freaking.time. This quest reminded me of the Blood and Wine expansion for Witcher 3, and thats a good thing.

Trekking up to Halalamamaakkakakakakaka to find the other guy and work on the town. Read a guide so Im basically clear cutting all the trees on the way like its the Brazilian Rain Forest.
