Zelda Breath of the Wild... pretty awesome.
« on: March 04, 2017, 12:18:17 am »
Damn, it's a shame that the Wii U's last game finally shows the console's potential.  Yeah it's not graphically on par with a next gen title, but finally the scope of a game is.  It's huge, there's a lot to do and it feels more like an old-school "wtf am I supposed to do?" Zelda from the pre-n64 days.  I sat down thinking I would give it a quick try tonight and bam!....  5 hours had passed.  Is it worth getting a switch?  Well if you don't have a Wii U I say a solid maybe, depending upon your tastes.

I will hand it to Nintendo on this one, it's clearly the best WiiU game.

Shame they didn't utilize the touchscreen for inventory management.  I feel like that was intentional to keep it from being better than the Switch version.

Not a fan of crafting or weapons that break but oh well.

Yeah it seems obvious that they gimped this one.  I saw a side by side video comparison of the two versions and the Switch version removes the pixelization around the edges... that's literally the only difference.

There's some optional motion-control fu in the game, most notably you can look through the slate and aim some weapons by tilting the gamepad... it makes me think that the game would have been more fun if they threw up the action on the gamepad's screen for better aiming, but they couldn't do that because the switch doesn't have two screens to play with.

The crafted weapons and recipes, ect. are indeed quite annoying.  You can't do fun stuff like chop down trees or cut grass because you are constantly worried you'll break your weapon.  I mean there are plenty of weapons so you aren't going to run out, but using some wooden club from a monster just feels wrong for a Zelda title.  That's my only real complaint.

Awesome, glad to hear you guys are liking it.
I went to the GDC talk for the game and it was awesome how they talked about the elements design and how this Zelda is different in that there are many different ways to solve a puzzle/obstacle.
They also talked about how engine prototyping ultimately lead to that re-releasing of Wind Waker HD. They used multiple Zelda engines to find out which was the most viable and using WW as a start was their best option.

Yeah I saw an article where they roughed out the game maps by making them in the original legend of Zelda.  It makes me wonder why they don't release Legend of Zelda maker... they have a mocked up engine anyway.

Yeah that's Nintendo. It's one of the things I admire about their processes. They are admamant about proving game design concepts rapidly in 2D first. When I worked on Federation Force (yes, the one that everyone hates) we also planned out some of the multiplayer design in a top-down 2D engine. It was such a blast. Too bad the game wasn't received well. But I did get to meet Kensuke Tanabe which is still one of the highlights of my career. LTTP and Links Awakening are the best Zelda's ever made!

Anyway, neat game.  Did have to consult a walkthrough to see where the hell the shrines were.  Like the minimalist soundtrack and the fact that you can do stuff like walk up to a tree...and just start climbing it.

Shrines glow red.... get on something high, look for red, and put a pin in it.  Later in the game you'll get a radar that beeps when you are near one so long as you've activated the tower in that region.  Who would have thought the best Assassin's Creed in a couple of years would be Zelda?!?  Seriously, they ripped AC off a lot.  Not that it's a bad thing... Shadow of Mordor did as well and it was fun.

I like the fact that you can completely ignore the lessons you are supposed to learn in most shrines.  There was one where you were supposed to jump on drifting rafts to get across water, but I had the ice function so I just made platforms out of the river and jumped across.  Being able to just do whatever in whatever order you want really helps the game.  I like the linear Zeldas but the last three were basically the same game so they needed a change.

The flashing gamepad is driving me nuts.  Can someone with a Wii U Pro controller comment on how the game plays using one?  About $15 for a third party knockoff.  May also utilize a post it note.

Great!!

Up until you have to use the game-pad for motion controls. Some shrines require it.

Yeah it's pretty darn annoying.  And in instances when you need to use the gamepad... nothing...  Like when you enter the name for your horse... the built in keypad that has been used for every single wii u game/app is there.... but up on the screen so you have to use the frikkin thumbsticks.

On a side note this game must be pushing the poor wii u to the max.  I brought up the internet app in-game to check a puzzle solution online and when I returned to the game I got a rather long loading screen.  It seems that this game is so big they suspend it and make a save when you use the home screen apps.  It looks amazing in the outer areas though, some rock formations in the desert regions are nearly photo-realistic.

Man I'm going to have to start cheating with maps if this keeps up.  Thus far I've found one legendary best... the elephant via helping the Zora out.  I ran into a guy that talked about birdmen, but he wanted me to do some sort of ridiculous glide challenge that costs me 20 rupees each time.  My guess is I have to beat it before he leads me to the birdmen.  Man I ran into a birdman bard and they are super creepy in this game... they look like giant birds... no cutesy duck-nose people in this game.

First things you gotta do on this game are switch the jump button and disable the motion controls.

I completely disagree. Many of the shrine puzzles rely on motion controls and it's a lot more fun to play it with them.  Also the bow is much easier to pinpoint targets with the motion controls turned on.

So this game is my new crack.  Found another divine beast and it became apparent that I did them in the wrong order as this one was waaaay easier to beat.  Also got cold weather clothes so I can explore the areas from the beginning of the game now without stupid cooking.  Found a snow dragon boss which appears to be completely optional.  I'll try my luck at killing that next.  The resource management is stupid, but damn this is a good game.

I'm still trying to get my hands on one. I'm a stupid idiot for not preordering. Though, I am normally not an early adopter for any system, but with all the great reviews I'm reading and hearing from friends, I feel dumb for not preordering.

Seems like a great game, but we should not let this distract us from the fact that on March 8, 2017, PBJ came close to, but failed to win a NES Classic in the first ever The Canadian Arcade giveaway, leaving instead with a schmedium-xtra-husky shirt not worth the cloth it was made from and how this loss directly lead to another valued member of the arcade community being denied said NES Classic at a steeply discounted rate with his good faith offer of cash money on the table and how this resulted in the eventual downfall of the arcade-centric-youtube-based-for-profit-infotainment machine and the birth of a new era.

After a couple of hours of playing I'm in love.  It has been years since there was a console game I looked forward to playing like this one.

Shame they didn't utilize the touchscreen for inventory management.  I feel like that was intentional to keep it from being better than the Switch version.

Near as I can tell the touchscreen doesn't work for anything in this game on the WiiU.  Typical Nintendo.

Just beat my third legendary beast.  Each battle is completely different, which I didn't expect.  The salamander beast is kind of like a stealth level.  Still gotta beat the remaining three dragons and I would like to kill one of those stupid centaurs.... those things are more powerful than the ancient tanks!  I still manage to get lost in some areas... the game is frikkin huge!

I got on a horse in about that same spot but only rode it for about 5 seconds before dying. Haven't been able to get near a mounted rider since without dying.

I pretty much gave up on horses.  You have to actually tame them to get a proper ride and you have to actually keep track of where they are ect.  I don't really see the point when you can glide run or teleport and nearly every area will force you to get off the horse to scale a mountain or whatever.

You cant have an epic adventure without a horse guys, come on.

The spotted ones will be easier to tame but yield lower stats (Amount of power speeds, strength, speed) Find a full color one and tame that. The one I found has 4 speed boosts. Then make sure you register it at the stable. When your done with the horse be sure to board the horse  at a stable, this will allow you to take them out from anyone stable on the map.

We (meaning my youngest) ended up getting a horse right before we quit last night.  The horse is nice if you are traveling deep into an area that doesn't have a teleport location yet.  We used it to travel to Kakariko Village for the first time.  But yeah once you have a teleport location unlocked I'm not sure the value either.

The most recent horse I found I named lil kim. The brown coat, out of control habits, and thick thighs. It just made sense at the time.
