High Score Competition #212: Neo Bomberman (Neo-Geo)
« on: February 28, 2017, 04:42:51 am »
As I have a shiny new neo cab to play with and never really had a chance on the last one I thought I would pick another Neo Geo classic :)

High Score Competition rules and scoreboard

----------------------
Game Name : Neo Bomberman (Neo-Geo)
ROM Name  = "neobombe"
----------------------

Settings: Default - Level 4
Controls
   Joystick: 4 - way
   Buttons: 1 - drop/kick/throw

Neo Bomberman consists of walking through maze-like areas filled with monsters with a goal of opening the gate leading to the next area. Playing as a bomberman, the player can lay bombs to destroy all of the monsters, which will subsequently open the gate. Destroying blocks in the maze may uncover useful items including remote control bombs, accelerators, hearts, and increased firing range.

Last Day: Sunday, March 12th 2017

In case someone gets the 'DIP.SW 1 OFF !!' message when starting this:

Press TAB, go to 'Dip Switches', turn 'Setting Mode' to 'Off', reset or exit the game.

Nice game pick.

I'm unable to confirm that my game is set to level 4.
I can enter the menu with F2, navigate up & down through the top menu with the left joystick, but I can't figure out how to select items to view or edit them. What's the trick?
I also seem to have Spanish & Japanese text. Weird.

First game, tired, not paying attention, careless: 27,650.

-Jason

PS--we seem to be playing Normal mode instead of Battle mode, yah?

Press F2 to enter the menu, go to 'setting up the soft dip', press fire. Go to 'slot 1  bomber man', press fire. Confirm that difficulty is set to 4. You can change it with the fire button. Exit the menu by pressing the C button (it's the space bar on the keyboard). In the main menu, go to 'exit' and press fire.

To change the language, hit TAB, go to 'Bios Selection' and change the driver to 'US MVS (2.?)'. Go to 'Reset' and press enter. The game boots and the language should now be set to english.
Make a savegame before the action starts. For some reason, MAME will not remember the driver settings, so when you quit the game and start it again, back to spanish text it is.

Edit: Yep, we play the normal mode.

Also the level should be displayed at the bottom of the splash screen before you insert creds.

I'm just going to say it.  This game is boring.  Slow moving.  I'll still play it cause i'm a sucker for competition.  But ugh.

Thanks. Able to navigate the NG settings menu. I think I just wasn't pushing the P1A button hard enough.

Confirmed level 4.

But, I don't see a BIOS section in the Tab menu. Perhaps 115u2 is too ancient to have that setting.

Did a bit better, till the boss bossed me around.

31,800.

Don't sweat it Titch. It's not you, it's me. [emoji38] I've tried the original Bomberman a few times and couldn't get into it. But just ignore my whining, cause I'm playing.

Water world is confusing & weird.

You guys playing w/ a 4-way or 8-way stick? I know it's Neo-Geo, so it should behave well w/ an 8-way, but I've been using one of my 2 4-ways on my 4-person panel, & it's the awkward far left position, angled at 45 degrees. I think I'll move over to one of the front positions & use an 8-way next.

Here is the very important text that gets translated from spanish to english. The japanese stuff stays japanese.

Not a slight improvement today.

107,300.

-Jason

PS--did I mention that I used to host Turbo Duo 5-player Bomberman parties on a regular basis?
PPS--8-way is definitely a bit worse than 4-way.  I lost a few guys due to a direction goof. But playing in front of your monitor instead of on the side & w/ a diagonal 4-way seems to more than compensate.
PPPS--starting piling on a few power-ups & steeds, & you're pretty much invincible.
PPPPS--this game took a long long time--I really got bored about halfway through--the game doesn't insert enough variety to convince me to continue for curiosity's sake--I continued to crush & to crush alone.
PPPPPS--died on 3rd boss. Was probably close to finishing him
PPPPPPS--I had a great game going last night, super powered up, in the high 50k range w/ no lives lost, then the power went out. Darn.
PPPPPPPS--I think I'm all Neo Bombermanned out. May I stop now please?

I remember playing a clone of this game on linked TI-83+ calculators in high school with one of my buddies. It was a very simple version and was actually pretty fun. Haven't had a chance to play this very much but hopefully will get a chance tomorrow and possibly submit a score. Just found out my wife is having twins so been kind of spaced out the past few days  :D
