Hi guys!
I wanna build my own cab with groovymame and a scart CRT. I want it to be a vertical mounted CRT...
Everything looks perfect for vertical games of course. But I wanna play horizontal games too.

So what are the best settings for horizontal games on a vertically mounted CRT?

I noticed that the horizontal scrolling looks odd in some games, like Metalslug. I am sure it has something to do with the nativ resolution of neogeo games. Their horizontal resolution is higher than my 266 pixel in my vertical setup. So you get to see scaling issues. Is there a way to minimize this phenomenon? Like using a different scaling method on horizontal games?

It's going to be tricky getting an integer-scaled mode into 15kHz, with what you want to do. It'll have to run interlaced, if it's even possible. Play with the range limits and see what you get. Try a 480i mode first, mb.

Build a second cab (hotizontal) in 6 months time. Infinitely better option.

Groovymame actually came up with an interlaced mode in the first place,  but I don't like interlaced modes. Doesn't feel like arcade to me. ;)

Since I am still a groovymame noob, I just don't want to miss an obvious scaling option that I just don't know.
If there is anybody out there happy with his vertical setup, please share your settings. I will give them a try.

Building a second horizontal cab would be the best way, but I am afraid my wife thinks otherwise. ;)

The other day I was stating nobody that I know of was running this kind of setup. It turns out there's somebody. The correct setting is, in VMMaker, the "Vertical (fixed)" option, and -monitor vertical in GM. This, indeed, will pick an interlaced resolution. The reason is analog to why we need to use interlaced resolutions to display vertical games on a horizontal monitor. If you don't like interlaced modes, disable the -interlace option in mame.ini. This will force GM to pick a progressive mode and use fractional scaling. As it was suggested it's actually more practical to target the wife issue.
Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

Ok, so there is nothing to do about my little situation here. ;) I already disabled the interlace setting. And I changed the aspect ratio to 1.6 so the image gets a little stretched vertically. Somehow this doesn't annoy me as much as I thought. So I will have to live with the compromise at the moment.
Convincing my wife to let me build another cab would be more expensive than the cab itself. ;)

I didn't fix the wife issue, myself, so much as I bought a bigger house. The budget didn't blow out it totally exploded :)
