Wedding gift project art. "Super, thanks for asking."
« on: February 13, 2017, 10:42:35 pm »
My cousin Michael and his long-term partner Scott just eloped. They are still planning a large wedding for family & friends but they decided not to risk waiting, do to the ages of Justice Ginsberg and Kennedy.

Mike loved my builds and asked me if I could do a small one for the kids to play at his wedding. I usually try to set goals for projects around expanding my skills or in some way working out side my comfort zone. Mike was, and still is, a big SNES guy so I am making the side art for this mostly from modified art assets from super Nintendo games. I'm only using the SNES color palette. I usually don't like pixelated Sprite art on builds, so the challenge is to do one that doesn't look unintentionally ridiculous.

Art Goals
  • Keep all the Sprite small so not to look ridiculously pixelated
  • As much as possible use original SNES sprits and back grounds, modified to fit the theme.
  • It needs to be a wedding themed, mostly using asset from Super Mario world (The all stars version) and Final Fantasy 4,5,6 sprites (6 is his favorite game of all time)
  • Pink triangles and rainbow flags need to make appearances

Any feed back on how to make my Scott & Mike sprits look more like the real people. Also ideas on making them look like they are in white tuxedos or suits.

I have an old PC that I am going to try to stuff into a small table top cocktail cab, or I may just get a 60 in 1.

PS: I no longer have PS so am using gimp, I miss my old job. :'(

Open to ideas, something campy with out being offensive.

Flaming quarters is my new favorite.

I like the good vs evil aspect of Rainbow in the Dark. It reminds me of Shining in the Dark, one of my favorite Genesis titles.

Pride and Proud is good to but I think Pride and Prejudice fits the clash of worlds aspect of the theme.

Quick question, did they ask you to make it campy, or is that you think they want?

I don't know, I think I'd approach it as this is something they're going to keep well after the wedding , so why tie it to that specific event? At least just make the Marquee wedding themed, but have a backup so that you can swap it out after the wedding. I don't know, that's how I'd do it, unless they were insistent on doing a specific way.

Mike seems to want it to be very gay pride. They did just in the last few have the right to marry recognized and they're already worried that I might be taken away.

I'm planning it as a little Mrs. Pac man ish size thing. It will have to fit in my suitcase to make it back to the US from Laos.

This will mostly be pozzel games, arcade classics, and some gay themed NES rom hacks that are out there..

Now that you mechion it, I see how this would work as a marque.

If any one can think os a SNES game with a banner, I would like to use one between the rainbow polls.

I'm sorry but that is terrible.

Wolfenstein, Nazis, the Klan, Republicans and protesters?  Is that supposed to be Trump?  It's a wedding man, why would you include any of that - and heaven forbid a republican family member attend and see what they are being lumped in with.  Might as well throw a damn lynching on there.  Jesus.

Make the whole thing happy, because weddings are no place to celebrate hate.  You clearly are spending way more time on the negative than the positive here and it's not cool.  I wouldn't want any depiction of the ---smurfing--- klan within a 1000 miles of my wedding, let alone as a centerpiece.  Pull your stuff together man.

Yeah, I'm with LC on this one. I GET what you're trying to do, but c'mon... it's a wedding, a celebration. Celebrate their love, don't acknowledge the hate.

I agree. There are too many people that want to inject politics into every facet of their life. All politicians are money grubbing narcissists. Leave them out of a happy celebration like this wedding.

Yea, I was thing the same. Was going for silly & bonkers down below and went way to fare. Just going to the cutting the bottoms completely out.

Also the top is taking a lot longer but that's only because I have been why more deliberate with what I'm doing as I know what I'm going for. Having the FF6 sprits look about right holding hand took me forever, mostly because I did with several iterations. The bottom I have been trowing lots of idea agented a wall and seeing what sticks.

This is the all love version.

Originally he wanted a kind of love overcomes theme. While he love most of the bonkers version,  he pointed out all those people and groups still hate him, or at least use fear of gays to advance their own interest and was probably not the best fit for his wedding. So we agreed to drop the overcoming aspect. Then I took a few days off from this.

First, I deleted my failed attempts to make hater's bunkers from the bottom. Then I added a lesbian couple, based off of two female sprites from Final Fantasy IV. To make it more inclusive I change the ethnicity of one and modified both quite a bit. These two sprites took me an absurd amount of time. I'm not an artist and wanted them embracing while still being clearly two different sprites.

Please let me know what you think.

Been working on this for an hour or two a night after the kids goto bed when possible.

I'm mostly happy with it. I have to work on the text a bit more. I found some FF quotes and mixed them in with ones quotes I found on love. I also added some personal references about Mike and asked him for ideas on how to add some for Scott.

What do you guys think?

Found two.

Also : 'It seems like just yesterday he was plying with his my little ponys.'

plying -> playing

his my little ponys - I assume you think of the toys called 'my little pony'. That doesn't work in this sentence. You could change it to 'he was playing with his my little pony toys' or
you could look up the little pony's names and use 'he was playing with Princess BlaBla' and hope that people will recognize the name.

Thanks guys,

Here is a version with the fixes you suggested. I need to give some thought to the quotes and there arrangement,
feedback welcome.

The "my little pony" is a bit of a inside joke. When we were little he lived on a Horse farm in Sullivan County on the same site of the wood stock concert. At the time his dad was a harness racer and his mom would buy them for him and his two brothers.

Mike has very clear memories of his Dad telling them mom "Stop buying them those girls toys. Your going to make them gay." Today he regrets ever saying that and still loves Mike very much.

He loves it. I would agree that it's not for everyone and it's specific to a one day event but most of us have wedding keepsakes.

It started as a loving gift, but it has taken a weird turn. I like the idea, but I don't like the end result. The quotes are just odd.

Perhaps make the Quotes on a separate layer (ie. use a transparent label sheet with post it note type removeable glue to print them on) - that way after the one day they could always be removed and just the main graphic be used for the actual machine.

Almost all the quotes were just plans holders and are up for replacement. I need to organizes a call with mike but I like the idea of making the most of the squared blank and having people fill in there own best wishes. I was going to email there friends and family for ideas but your way is a better idea.

Doing art for someone else is tricky.

Update: Just talked to Mike and he and Scot wants to try the quotes themselves so I sent him the file's and fonts needed.

Good timing, I just talked to Mike this past weekend and told him that I need the quotes so I can get it printed when I'm back in the states in two weeks. Secretly I want to have the whole thing finished I can give it to him early.

The art is going to stay more are less as is but all the quotes are going to be from friends and family. The last version was mostly filler googled love quotes. Mike is facilitating this as he wants to copy edit and it's his wedding.

I just finished making a spinner that I want to use on this build but am trying to avoid feature creep. Arkanoid would be sweet and is has a rainbow colored themed. The original goal was to have under 50 games with the vast majority being puzzle games and a few classic arcade games. There are a few LGBT themed NES Rom hacks of classic arcade games I want to add as well. I need to pick out some SNES puzzle games that are not just bad ports of games that are better in MAME.

Her is where I pared it off. The included quotes will most likely be replaced. They both changed there middle names to clover so I added  it in. Super thanks for asking will be on the CP, I'll post that bit in the next few days.
