Have you thought about getting a Ghosts 'n' Goblins board and a switcher for this? A multi "Ghosts" might be fun.

I have actually,  my original idea was to somehow mix the art packages of the two and do a combined cab like my DK:U but then decided to go more towards Ghouls.  I might toss a Jamma switcher and a 19-in-1 set to single game mode with Goblins untill i stumble across an actual board.

So, this just came in the mail from Texas via Pennsylvania. :D

Anyone with experience on these repros know if i need to paint/coat them? I feel like this surface rusting might be an issue down the road?

Painting those hinges sucks ass...

If you going to go coating, get someone else to do it.

I just use Rustoleum grey auto primer and then paint it over it. Powder coating is fine but overkill.

So knowing you, you're going to powder coat it. :-)

The black took forever to do just 3 coats, and it was a nightmare because it kept soaking into the MDF and giving a rough texture.

Bro.  Get a friggin' paint gun...

I've seen MDF take paint like a mofo due to not being sealed properly. Do you mean the particleboard? That seems more porous than MDF - which is known for being a pain - so the particleboard would likely be a thirsty bugger. Some seal MDF with a 50/50 glue and water mix that seals things up very well. I suppose that is why most cabs like this are vinyl covered? Curious what kind of primer you used before painting... I was gonna roll, now I am worried  :lol

Seriously coming together nicely tho Chance, and at a good pace. I would definitely prime/paint that CP as I reckon over time the corrosion will creep under the laminate fairly easily. That said, it may be fine and not lift the art. I recently stripped a seemingly fine filing cabinet and was shocked at what the bare metal looked like underneath as it had a fair deal of corrosion starting, with little hint from the paint on top.

Small update:

Only cost me $52.50 CDN to have the CP and marquee bracket powder coated to match. Same place I get all my other stuff done. To me thats equal/cheaper then it would have cost to spray bomb it considering the cost of paint, my time to do it, and prep work, cleanup. Plus its done WAY better then i could have sprayed it, and it's more durable.  Plus it was done in 3 days, not the two weeks some people quote, so Win.

Yeah, that factored in too. It was on my way into a client's place anyways. So whatever.

Nailed it.

For sure. :) Though one of these days i'll surprise you.

Also another interesting thing to note. This HS-1 cabinet only has one speaker and speaker grill. Even though the cabinets have two sets of speaker slots on the outside. I'm going to be upgrading this cabinet to have pair of speakers, (more on that later).  I had some extra matching perforated metal from another project so i cut out a similar square, cleaned them both to remove rust and oil. and then sprayed them black.

So to wrap this up here's 12 hours of the 14 hour live stream we did a couple nights ago building this cab from the pile of parts to the completed, working game.

Due to the unfortunate limitations of Youtube, the upload of the live stream cuts off at the 12 hour mark with the game powered on and me solving an audio issue. However by the end of it I managed to get everything 100% and even did a small play through. This Project is now done, and i'm very happy with how it turned out.

https://youtu.be/yE-8SMEI7Fk

Also, here's some pictures of the build i took in the process.

For the buttons i've chosen to go with a combination of Chrome/Black IL buttons. I was never a fan of the original white P1/2 buttons on this control panel, it always seemed incomplete. Black ones just seemed to blend into the panel too much, and ones with the little men on them just seemed redundant with the artwork already showing 1 and 2 players. I felt the Chrome/Black was a nice mix, and i insisted on the IL's so they didn't have that cheap "Aliexpress special" look to them.  I'm also using Ultimarc GoldLeaf buttons for that leaf button feel, and that classic look. I used these on a NeoGeo panel and for repetitive button smashing they are the way to go for sure.

I'm a huge fan of choice. and one of the things i liked about this is that i had a choice of stick. The original game shipped with a choice of the Coin Controls stick, or a Wico. I had found a source of Reproduction Wico sticks that feel and play identical to some NOS ones i have on other games. I polished the balltop to a shine with some 800 and 2000 gritt Wet/Dry sand paper, and some Novis.

The original game also used a pair of incandescent bulbs for the marquee. I figured, i didn't want to have to change out bulbs, or cause heat damage to the artwork, so i opted for an LED bar with a similar colour temperature.

I also rebuilt the power block with a new power supply and filter, which i promptly replaced with a better one, because those cheap PSU's suck and couldn't put out any more then 10.5v under load.

The artwork was provided by This Old Game. Rich was kind enough to provide a version of the side art that was laminated in matte in order to better match the surface of the white laminate we used for the sides. Very happy with how well it looks on the game, and it blends with the white quite well.

This project was one of my favourites for sure. In the end I feel that I was able to get what I had in mind out on the floor of the games room. Definitely that Good vs. Evil and tune up of the original that i was looking for.

I do like the white sides and the simple side art. There's so much that can be done with white and empty space. I'm glad you didn't feel compelled to wrap the whole thing with tons of gaudy art.

See, you can bring fresh new designs but still retain a classic look.  :-)

Thanks. Actually, if you watch the live stream you can see me bitching about some of my tools and how they haven't held up.

Thanks! Ya know, i really don't mind stencil work. Its really just a step further from adding side art.  I think in this case adding the laminate to the side was about as work intensive as having to paint the sides of that Robotron i did. So... its a tie? haha :)

Credit where credit is due: Thanks for your help. You can't tell in the video, but i was ready to call it a night when we had no sound. It wasn't until you mentioned that I should check continuity that I felt motivated to continue, then hearing the game sound gave me a second wind. In the end you hit the nail on the head: The positive speaker lead had a bad crimp, (there's always one...). So thanks for that :)

Been watching other videos, interested to see if you guys uncovered any little tips or tricks that were out of the ordinary. It seems pretty straightforward, trim laminate to 2" overhang, contact cement on both pieces, use dowels for placement, j-roller it, route it.

One of my 3 is a DK and I'm currently debating whether I need to remove the finish before laminating over it. I'm using the Nevamar laminate suggested in the Sky Skipper project and it looks like they just went right over the top with some light fill and sanding. I'm hoping with the thin vert grad laminate the width for the t-molding isn't an issue.

Have you guys ever used laminate on a CP and drilled through it? I have a restore where I am doing that. I am nervous to ruin the laminate I put on.
