That doesn't look too bad. I like the screw through the t-molding. Awesome game, good luck with the restore.

thanks for the pix.

That is a gnarly chunk out of the front. Bondo fill or cut and replace the wood?

I like those control panels where you just need to replace that little plate. Since I have access to a plasma cutter, I'd be making myself panels left and right if I had one of those.

For that corner, or any corner where its not quite a large enough bit of damage to warrant just cutting out the corner and adding in a new piece of wood.. I've had good results adding in either a bit of wooden doweling rods, or some screws to act as a sort of as rebar for when i formed bondo around it, just to give it a little bit of strength/durability. If you try to rebuild the corner from just bondo alone , at some point in the future if it happens to gets a bit of force on that corner (getting kicked or banged around), it might just snap out the chunk of bondo. I used screws on my Joust corner touchup a few years back, wish I took pictures of it, but its held up great, and you'd never know it was repaired that way.

I use dowels too, for this cab I'd get some corner guards to go over the repair work

If the corner is supposed to be square I've had good luck patching in plywood.  It holds better than bondo for the corners.

This ones pretty grimy. It would need to be stripped completely, parts all cleaned, tarnish removed, and the holes patched. Id rather just skip that for this one and get started on more important stuff.

I will attest to this. It's the difference in time between a new coat of paint on the outside vs. essentially making a whole unit from parts... Because if you're gonna do it right, do it the whole way. Especially when its mechanical parts... Nothing like something that looks nice but doesn't work anywhere near as nice.

Looking good Chance. I dig the corner trick... Have you ever considered grafting on a section of cab? This one doesn't seem bad, but have seen some who have added a chunk of wood to replace missing pieces. Looks tedious either way.

If you're going this far on the cab, you might as well re-finish the original doors.  The HAPP won't look right.  It's equivalent to someone doing an awesome job on a cabinet and then slapping an X-Arcade on there because it's "easier".

Any updates on this cab Chance? I figure you are probably busy with your two new cocktail cabinet projects, but I'm excited to see how this one turns out.  I love Ghouls n' Ghosts, but have only ever played the home console versions of the game

Do yourself a favor. Don't front load a bunch of reasons why people are not going to like your choices. Just put it out there and let the choices speak for themselves. It betrays a lack of confidence in those decisions.

Also. Does the internet really need another laminating video? There are thousands of them already.

I just use Rustoleum grey auto primer and then paint it over it. Powder coating is fine but overkill.

So knowing you, you're going to powder coat it. :-)

The black took forever to do just 3 coats, and it was a nightmare because it kept soaking into the MDF and giving a rough texture.

Bro.  Get a friggin' paint gun...

I've seen MDF take paint like a mofo due to not being sealed properly. Do you mean the particleboard? That seems more porous than MDF - which is known for being a pain - so the particleboard would likely be a thirsty bugger. Some seal MDF with a 50/50 glue and water mix that seals things up very well. I suppose that is why most cabs like this are vinyl covered? Curious what kind of primer you used before painting... I was gonna roll, now I am worried  :lol

Seriously coming together nicely tho Chance, and at a good pace. I would definitely prime/paint that CP as I reckon over time the corrosion will creep under the laminate fairly easily. That said, it may be fine and not lift the art. I recently stripped a seemingly fine filing cabinet and was shocked at what the bare metal looked like underneath as it had a fair deal of corrosion starting, with little hint from the paint on top.

I do like the white sides and the simple side art. There's so much that can be done with white and empty space. I'm glad you didn't feel compelled to wrap the whole thing with tons of gaudy art.

See, you can bring fresh new designs but still retain a classic look.  :-)

Thanks! Ya know, i really don't mind stencil work. Its really just a step further from adding side art.  I think in this case adding the laminate to the side was about as work intensive as having to paint the sides of that Robotron i did. So... its a tie? haha :)

Good to know, my next 3 restores are all laminate jobs so I'll have some firsthand experience.

Excellent.  We shoot footage for a laminate installation video. but i'm not sure sure how we're going to edit it yet.   :(

Been watching other videos, interested to see if you guys uncovered any little tips or tricks that were out of the ordinary. It seems pretty straightforward, trim laminate to 2" overhang, contact cement on both pieces, use dowels for placement, j-roller it, route it.

One of my 3 is a DK and I'm currently debating whether I need to remove the finish before laminating over it. I'm using the Nevamar laminate suggested in the Sky Skipper project and it looks like they just went right over the top with some light fill and sanding. I'm hoping with the thin vert grad laminate the width for the t-molding isn't an issue.

I would recommend clamping a sacrificial board on top that you can drill through.  The laminate will be less likely to chip that way.  Make sure you drill down into the laminate otherwise it may try to separate from the force of the drill.

You could also make a hardboard template with your holes drilled where you want them.  Clamp the template on top of your laminate and use a pattern routing bit to route the holes.  A router bit would be less likely to chip than a drill bit.

Excellent.  We shoot footage for a laminate installation video. but i'm not sure sure how we're going to edit it yet.   :(
