TCA - Ghouls n' Ghosts Project cab pickup and Restoration!
« on: February 11, 2017, 04:30:00 pm »
I recently picked up a Dynamo HS-1 project cab to start a Ghouls n' Ghosts restoration. I have a repro control panel coming in from Texas, and soon i need to get my hands on the art package from TOG. Pretty excited about this one, as its a favourite memory from my youth.  Cabinet is in amazing shape, very little wood damage, and just needs a teardown, some minor bondo cleanup, and some new paint.

I have a massively cool pickup/restoration coming soon on the horizon as well, so i want to try and get this one done in record time. Here's the video and some pictures!

That doesn't look too bad. I like the screw through the t-molding. Awesome game, good luck with the restore.

thanks for the pix.

That is a gnarly chunk out of the front. Bondo fill or cut and replace the wood?

I like those control panels where you just need to replace that little plate. Since I have access to a plasma cutter, I'd be making myself panels left and right if I had one of those.

Adding Bondo for sure, only that little bit is bad and I can reshape it for sure. I gotta strip all the paint and base layer of vinyl off first.

That's kinda my plan with this panel. However that's for another project as it's coming out in favor of an actual repro GnG panel I have coming from Texas.

Gonna start working on this sometime this week.

For that corner, or any corner where its not quite a large enough bit of damage to warrant just cutting out the corner and adding in a new piece of wood.. I've had good results adding in either a bit of wooden doweling rods, or some screws to act as a sort of as rebar for when i formed bondo around it, just to give it a little bit of strength/durability. If you try to rebuild the corner from just bondo alone , at some point in the future if it happens to gets a bit of force on that corner (getting kicked or banged around), it might just snap out the chunk of bondo. I used screws on my Joust corner touchup a few years back, wish I took pictures of it, but its held up great, and you'd never know it was repaired that way.

I use dowels too, for this cab I'd get some corner guards to go over the repair work

If the corner is supposed to be square I've had good luck patching in plywood.  It holds better than bondo for the corners.

Making some progress on the teardown.

JoshODBrown and I stripped down the cab to the shell. Then the next day i went at the front and sides with a heat gun to remove the vinyl covering. This thing is in amazing condition now that i have all that black plastic painted with grey paint off.   The plan is to repaint, not recover. I want to get a little crafty with the paint finishes and find a nice satin and semi-gloss to roll on with foam rollers. Back in September i worked on a cocktail project for a my old boss and had good results with the same finish.

The one corner isn't too bad, structurally  it wont need much to be repaired. That will be the next step, and will be included in the next episode of the restoration on TCA.

I picked up a new coin door, Its from HAPP, not the same Coin Controls one that was on originally, but it's really similar and this will save me a ton of work and time restoring the old one. I plan to switch out the credit buttons for red ones.

I've moved the cabinet into the garage and now that the weather isn't bad i've started sanding down all the surfaces with 40, 100, and 220 grit. Next i'll need to do some bondo work and fix up the corners.

As you can see from above, this is what the front left corner looked like:

Now that all the sanding is done, it's time to repair the front corners with some bondo.  When i do this, i like to build a form around the area. I do this by wrapping pieces of hardwood and plexi with wax paper and clamping them into position around the area. Sometimes I try using a spare chunk of t-moulding as well. because i'm doing a flat corner, i like to use just a little more bondo then i need and then flatten it down with some plexi (also wrapped in wax paper), and weigh it down to flatten it.

What your left with is a bit of a rough canvas you can shape into something resembling a proper corner.

I don't show it here in this picture, but i take a circle template from my drafting kit, and a pencil and draw the radius onto the hardened bondo. This gives me a guide to ensure that the corner comes out round after i take to it with the sander.

For the final step, i run the slot cutting bit over it with the router to make a new grove for the t-molding.

I'll be going over this with more detail in the video once its ready.  For now, i patched up both front corners, and a couple holes by the coin door where a lockdown bar had been installed. Once it was cleaned off, i moved the cabinet back into the basement for paint. :)

Restoring coin doors takes "a ton of time?"  90 seconds of shaking the rattle can of hammered black, bro.

This ones pretty grimy. It would need to be stripped completely, parts all cleaned, tarnish removed, and the holes patched. Id rather just skip that for this one and get started on more important stuff.

I will attest to this. It's the difference in time between a new coat of paint on the outside vs. essentially making a whole unit from parts... Because if you're gonna do it right, do it the whole way. Especially when its mechanical parts... Nothing like something that looks nice but doesn't work anywhere near as nice.

Looking good Chance. I dig the corner trick... Have you ever considered grafting on a section of cab? This one doesn't seem bad, but have seen some who have added a chunk of wood to replace missing pieces. Looks tedious either way.

I've never really needed to replace whole sections of wood. Ive always been lucky enough that it can be fixed with clamps, bondo, or wood glue. That being said im not against having to do it, but i doubt i would pickup a game with that kind of damage unless it was one of my three remaining "must have" games.

If you're going this far on the cab, you might as well re-finish the original doors.  The HAPP won't look right.  It's equivalent to someone doing an awesome job on a cabinet and then slapping an X-Arcade on there because it's "easier".

Any updates on this cab Chance? I figure you are probably busy with your two new cocktail cabinet projects, but I'm excited to see how this one turns out.  I love Ghouls n' Ghosts, but have only ever played the home console versions of the game

The only real update is that my SF:2 board is back from being converted to GnG. It has a selector switch so i can choose what ROM set you want to start the game as. It's very bad ass, and i've already beaten my previous best distance into the game. :D

The cabinet is also ready to be painted and given the laminate treatment on the outside walls. I've abandoned the "lets roll on the paint" idea, for various reasons. I have a plan for this that i'm gonna keep quiet on until i get it done because its not conventional but i have all the confidence in the world it should look cool (won't be purple... don't worry).  The cocktails are aside right now because i don't want to start them until this GnG is done. Last week i did a quick 24hours on my new Great 1000 Mile Rally, and this weekend coming up is YEGPIN in Edmonton. As soon as we get back from that we have a Nintendo Joystick project in conjunction with Mike's Arcade, then i'll have some time to get back to this build.  :D

I REALLY want to get this done, what i have planned for it has me pretty excited too. :D

Lots to talk about since my last post so i'll be quick.

Next up was the paint. I started with the back panel. gave it a good couple coats of primer, and then moved on to the black. Honestly, if i'm working with bare wood i'm NEVER going to use rollers again. Knowing what i know about rattle cans (although expensive) and HVLP Sprayers, i'm never rolling on paint again. The black took forever to do just 3 coats, and it was a nightmare because it kept soaking into the MDF and giving a rough texture.

It was getting bad, so i said, screw it. I've painted most of my other cabs with rattle cans. I'm gonna do this one too.  We moved the cabinet into the garage and masked off everything we didn't want black.  I'm not going with the traditional colour scheme here. We'll not completely.

I painted the majority of the cabinet including the back and monitor shroud with a flat black primer, then masked off the back and threw a few coats of semigloss black down.  As before the results were amazing. Expensive, but I'm happy with them. I've painted os many things with rattle cans, that I've started to get it down to a science and use less cans.

So far so good.

Here's a better look at the cab now that the spray is finished.

Later this week we're going to tackle the laminate for the sides. I've gone out and picked up a J-Roller, some contact cement and a couple sheets of matte finish formica. needless to say this will not be a conventional looking GnG.  But more on that later.

Laminate for the win!

Ok, Cat's outta the bag so to speak. This will not be your regular old black Ghouls n' Ghosts cabinet, (yes, i know, "Not Original" :) ) But i was never really a fan of the all black with white outline artwork, lack of contrast, etc, that the original one was. So i'm gonna make a few changes.  For starters, the sides of this cabinet are now bright white. :D  Kinda going for a Light vs. Dark thing here with the white and the black front. There will be some more subtle tweaks of this as i go along. All hopefully quite tasteful. I mean, With the board i'm putting in here its already Not Original, so think of this as an unofficial "deluxe" version of the game.  This is definitely one of those "the pictures don't do it justice" kinda things.

We really didn't get that many pictures of the process, however we did document it on video and will be releasing a separate "Laminating 101" video on the channel.

Do yourself a favor. Don't front load a bunch of reasons why people are not going to like your choices. Just put it out there and let the choices speak for themselves. It betrays a lack of confidence in those decisions.

Also. Does the internet really need another laminating video? There are thousands of them already.
