Making the Control Panel

Started work on the control panel today.

So far so good.

Button fitting test.

I like the feel of the Happ competition buttons.

I will be cutting slots in the side panels and control panel for the t-moulding next, this will be done next weekend.

Hopefully I will also be able to cut and fit some more panels also (front, top & back).

Bracing

I have made a small amount of progression with the build.

The lower compartment will be for the power strip and subwoofer. The upper compartment will be for the PC.

Next I positioned the monitor to determine the correct height to mount it.

I plan to start painting the panels this weekend.

Any tips for paint prep?

I was planning to sand the mdf then prime, sand again then paint.

Is that particle board or MDF? I can give you tips on particle board if you were unfortunate enough to have to use it. I made that mistake :-(

That monitor looks small.  Don't be cheap.

It's a 27" monitor, any bigger and it would be a TV!

If you're looking for a mirror finish, check out Ond's videos:

To get is super smooth, I use an oil-based primer and paint, sanding with finer paper between each coat. Using oil products takes longer though since the dry time takes forever.

Big monitors are impressive at a distance, but for actual play isn't it optimal to have the whole screen fit within your field of view? With your head only an arm's length from the screen, 27" is huge. I'm going with a 24" in mine. I don't want to have to turn my head to look across the screen.

(Also, a 24" 16:9 ends up just a touch taller than a 19" 4:3. 19" was a fairly common monitor size for classic arcade games as far as I can tell.)

I think what Jim might be alluding to is the fact that the cabinet size makes that monitor look small. In a lot of ways, you would have been better served designing the cabinet around the monitor and not vice versa.

The monitor is 65cm wide, the arcade cabinet is 70cm wide.

I am happy with it and looks fine to me. Let's just wait and see what it looks like once it's together.  :)

I did consider vinyl wrapping as I have seen that a few people have had great success with it, however I already had some oil primer and paint so went with that option.

Cheers for the suggestion.

Each to their own, if you are happy with 24" then go for it  :), I understand your logic and it makes sense.

I wanted something bigger then 24" but smaller than 32"

27" it is for me. :)

I think the issue is that the monitor is just sitting on a desk with 1 side of the machine propped up and it appears that the desk is the width of the cab.

Ah I see, that would make sense Malenko.

The cabinet definitely will not be the size of the table.

70cm width.

Good observation.

My apologies N-J, I was unclear. I didn't mean that 27" was too big. I meant that it was plenty big enough, and certainly not small enough to be "cheap." The "turn my head" bit was in contrast to the really big screens I've seen used by some.

Keep in mind that if the primer/paint is gumming up on your sandpaper, it isn't dry. Patience is key with oil-based products.

Why did you do the button holes so far back?
Those admin buttons look rather close to the edge!

I agree. You have all that space there, and those holes look super awkward right up in those corners.

I have based my button positioning on the X-Arcade dual-stick. I play on a X-Arcade dual-stick frequently and find it very comfortable having space to rest my wrist and forearm.

Ignoring the two lower offset buttons, you can see that the stick has plenty of space between the buttons and the bottom of the control panel.

I measured the distance between the bottom 3 buttons and the bottom of the control panel and copied this when making my control panel.

Its more just the Admin buttons than the play buttons.
Ime with you on the wrist rest area but I think you would of been better moving  the whole thing down a inch.

I messed up with the admin buttons, got my measurements wrong.

They are very close to the edge, closer then I would like, however as the mdf is 18mm the structure around the button is still very strong.

I'm going to roll with it and see how it goes.

It's not that hard to cut a plug for the hole, fill in the gaps with sawdust & wood glue mixture, then redrill them where you want.
MDF is basically sawdust and glue anyway.

(hole all the way to the right was filled in and redrilled lower.....it was actually correct the first time, but that's beside the point  :-[ )

EDIT:
Since you have the player start buttons close to where I do, here is mine for reference:
(not that it's standard or anything)

Since your cabinet isn't as wide, you might consider arranging them something more like this, but up higher inline with the select button:

Nigel... you don't have to sand MDF. I would use a high quality primer and top coat. Thats all you need brother.

Update

Applied primer to the cabinet.

After letting the primer dry I began painting with a oil based paint.

The next day I worked on the front kick panel, routing a space for the coin door.

This router is slowly becoming my favourite power tool thanks to this site, I had never even heard of a router before arcadecontrols.com

Electronics finally being installed.

Update

So originally I had decided to go with a 2.1 PC speaker setup, however I went cold on this idea and purchased some 5.25 drivers with an amplifier instead.

On the weekend I began working on the speaker panel.

I marked the area to be routed.

The end result.

Then chamfered the edge.

Saw dust from the chamfering.

I tackled mounting the Sanwa JLF joysitcks next.

I had to dismantle the joystick so that I could use the mounting plate as a template.

Using the router I cut out a square for the joystick to sit in to.

Next I needed to route out some of the control panel to allow the metal mounting plate to sit just below the surface.

The end result.

Hopefully now with 2mm Plexiglass on top of the control panel surface I should get the correct mounting height for a Sanwa JLF joystick.

Cabinet with the control panel in place and monitor mounted.

Speaker panel and admin button panel mounted.

Applied primer to the new panels. (Excuse the front door panel, going to re-do it all as i'm not happy with it).

Mike A, I'm wearing a dust mask when cutting the MDF, thanks all the same for the advice.

I didn't know that MDF dust was toxic prior to reading through ArcadeControls.com threads.  :-\
