Background

I have always wanted to build my own Arcade machine having seen the tail end of the Arcade era (1991 onwards).

Through the 90's I played mainly fighting game Arcade's such as:

- Street Fighter 2
- Mortal Kombat 1,2,3,
- Marvel vs Capcom,
- Tekken 2,
- Virtua Fighter
- King of the Fighters
- Killer Instinct

However I dabbled in other great titles such as Metal Slug, NAM 1975, Final Fight, Sega Rally, Daytona USA, etc.

Now, one of my favourite games of all time is 'Streets of Rage' made for the Sega Mega Drive. I know Streets of Rage was never an Arcade title but it can be played with Arcade controls as it's a side scrolling beat em up and also it's different, I don't recall seeing many Streets of Rage based themes. I may add other characters from other fighting games to the side art, time will tell, lot's to do before then.

I found this great site when doing research on how to build my own arcade. After reading through lots of great project build threads I was inspired the most by 'Pete's Slim Arcade' build, simply because of the design, I love the look. I hope Pete won't mind me using his plans he uploaded.

Pete's Slim Arcade Project - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,121148.msg1284984.html#msg1284984

I will update the thread as I progress.

Same here... 2 was the best! Although I really really really like the Streets of Rage Remake.

No problem ;)

The arcade version of SOR2 was basically the same as the Genesis version but with all the 1ups removed and some extra guys thrown into the mix to beat you down a bit faster :p

I chose it as the fortnightly hi score comp game a few months ago actually lol

Control Panel Components

This box arrived today.

The project has begun.

I will open the box tomorrow to show what's inside as it's been a long day for me.

Great choice. I have seen lot's of Neo-Geo stand up restorations and projects but not many (if any) bartops.

Look forward to seeing some pictures.

I love Streets of Rage!  Check out the Beat Em Up/Hack N Slash gamelist in the link in my signature.  Give Violent Storm a try.  It's no SOR, but has it's own crazy vibe.

Not a huge Violent storm guy... it's not enough Street Fighter and too final fight. I dig Crime Fighters myself.

SOR2 was my all time favourite scrolling brawler.  SORR was an amazing tribute to the franchise, and like you I constantly hope Sega will do something amazing with the franchise again.

It makes me nervous though - when I see a company as great as Capcom completely bugger up Final Fight Streetwise, I think I'd rather never see SOR4 than see something as terrible as that happen.

Control Panel Components Part-2

Finally found some free time this weekend to open the delivery from Arcade World UK.

I am going for a 8 button layout so I can also play modern games like Street Fighter 4 & 5.

I will be playing a lot of 'The King of Fighters' so the top 4 buttons will be Neo Geo colours with the bottom 4 buttons coloured white.

I originally wanted Sanwa buttons but I discovered that mounting them in a 18mm MDF control panel can be tricky as Sanwa buttons are not very deep.

I still wanted decent quality buttons so went with Happ's competition buttons which will protrude a 18mm MDF control panel without issue for an easy install.

Cherry D44X switches for every button

Sanwa JLF joysticks

Coin Door

Time to open more parcels.

The coin door has some light scuffs and could do with a touch of paint in places but I managed to win it cheap on ebay.

I would have preferred a twin coin door but I couldnt resist the bargain.

The coin door will be for aesthetics only.

Yeah just ordered a amp and speakers ;)

Why not connect up your coin door? Makes for a cool feature and you can still have credit buttons for free play.

I'm trying to build this Arcade on a budget but if I have some spare cash I will definitely add a coin mech so the cabinet can accept coins.

I really was not going to add a coin mech but you have swayed me, just thinking about it, having a working coin mech would add to the realism.

Anything that brings nostaligia I am up for.

I was so close to buying a amp & speakers from ArcadeWorldUk, I went with a cheap 2.1 setup I found on eBay, it works great but really wishing I went with the amp and speakers, ah well.

Two 4" drivers/speakers in a bartop should be amazing!

For what it's worth - the coin novelty lasts for the first couple games for me and then it just gets in the way.

You should be able to mod something up so that when a coin is inserted, it triggers a switch and adds a credit. I can't imagine it would be too hard.

Yeah if you are not worried about coin types or whatever you can just right up a wire microswitch behind the coin entry. The coin falls through, trips the switch,  and a credit is added. You should see my half assed way of doing it on my ball buster build

There is a visceral feeling for some people (me) when coins plunk down into the coin box. For other people it just gets in the way. I have three machines they all take coins. My friends have little kids and they love shoving quarters into the machines.

27" Monitor

I won this 27" Acer monitor on eBay for £21!

The only issue it has is that there is a small crack to the bezel seen in the bottom right hand corner, that's it! The crack will be covered up by a bezel and won't be seen.

I was planning to go for a 24" monitor but I just wanted to go a little bigger without going to 32".

I have placed the monitor next to my 22" desktop monitor for size comparison.

The all important VESA mounting points, this should make the process of mounting this monitor a lot easier.

This is a great idea, simple but effective. Struggling to find a micro switch with a long wire like the picture you uploaded unfortunately  :-[, I will keep searching.

Great to see so many Streets of Rage fans!

I am in the early stages of planning my artwork/cp/marquee so I am open to opinions and advice, feel free to pitch in.

I am a beginner with Photoshop and I have never been good with art or very creative but I am going to give it my best shot.

I put in some time last night on Photoshop creating a marquee, I have come up with a quick marquee that needs more work but with time I think I can get it right, finding high quality Streets of Rage images is proving hard, loads of high res Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat images but not so much for SOR.

What I do know is that I want the marquee and control panel to be Streets of Rage based, however I want the side art to be a mix of Streets of Rage and my favourite fighting games:

- Street Fighter
- Mortal Kombat
- King of Fighters
- Killer Instinct

Only 1 or 2 characters from each game though, I don't want to over complicate the image/side art.

The music is way ahead of it's time, it still sounds great today and better then any game music produced today  8)

I originally wanted to go for some 5.25" drivers but a great deal came up on eBay for a Logitech x-230 speaker set - £15 so I grabbed it.

I tested it yesterday night and it sounds great, more than enough for a arcade cabinet and the sub sounds great on SOR, I will post a video up soon, hopefully my phone can capture the audio well.

Quote

I regret not getting some 5.25" speakers and a amp, I will have to settle with the Logitech x-230 for now, mounting 5.25" speakers and a amp sure would have been easier than the Logitech setup.

I will take your advice and upload a clip of the  'Never Return Alive' track on the Logitech x-230 setup to see what you guys think.

PS to everyone, please feel free to chip in with ideas and thoughts as nothing is set in stone with my build.

I'm hoping to use your help to make this cabinet the best it can be.

How about an animatronic robot buddy that's always down to be Player 2 and occasionally puts out?

LMAO

Post up your art in the art section when you are ready mate.
There are lots of good art guys on here.

Have you looked at streets of rage online? They used to have loads of good fan art.
A bit like my Blaze ;)

Actually there was a Arcade version of Streets of Rage ;)

Anyways Hi Five my man!
I am also a die hard SOR lover (2 being my fave game ever!)

I look forward to seeing this come alive!

Same here... 2 was the best! Although I really really really like the Streets of Rage Remake.

Personally I think the first one was the best but I am glad to see someone making a cabinet on this! I remember playing for over an hour the first time and picking the wrong answer on the last level. FACEPALM....

Who wanted to be the right hand man lol

Also there was a project that was being worked on sadly it was cancelled

Intrested in seeing your design I came across one online but to me this one looks a little busy
