Actually there was a Arcade version of Streets of Rage ;)

Anyways Hi Five my man!
I am also a die hard SOR lover (2 being my fave game ever!)

I look forward to seeing this come alive!

Same here... 2 was the best! Although I really really really like the Streets of Rage Remake.

Personally I think the first one was the best but I am glad to see someone making a cabinet on this! I remember playing for over an hour the first time and picking the wrong answer on the last level. FACEPALM....

Also there was a project that was being worked on sadly it was cancelled

Oh don't get me wrong I probably have more hours in Streets of Rage than the sequel. I got it packaged with my Sega CD and it was the only game worth playing nonstop from that system.

Here is another Streets of Rage sequel that looks a bit rough but at least it's a 2D side scroller. I can't ever get behind a 3D Streets of Rage, 2D for life!

How about an animatronic robot buddy that's always down to be Player 2 and occasionally puts out?

LMAO

Post up your art in the art section when you are ready mate.
There are lots of good art guys on here.

I have a feeling you are too new to be aware of his previous commissioned pieces.....

On the modern SOR remake topic, The TakeOver on steam is pretty damn good, but is an early access game and the author didn't deliver his previous kick starter game.  Personally I think it had a lot to do with the publisher he brought on board, but that's a discussion for another thread.

I was thinking earlier of a idea for side art for you. Not sure what you think but thought I would run it past you.

Imagine the underground train level on MK3 with the street above it that you could uppercut your opponent through.

You could have Axel delivering a grand upper to a MK character sending him up to the street while a street fighter character is taking on someone else up top.

You get the idea anyways.

Could also do something similar with the construction site level from SOR3.

That would be a great looking piece of sideart! I would love to do something like that.

The problem is finding High resolution Streets of Rage images, they are pretty much non existent.

I can find images large enough for a marquee or control panel, but none large enough for side art.

I have two options I believe, pay a artist to do some high resolution art for me, or wait until SORonline is back up and running as I believe they have lots of high resolution images there.

I have been messing around in photoshop today (2-3hrs), just getting a feel for the software and I came up with the following draft that is by no means anywhere near finished.

The picture of Axel still has a watermark on it! I have asked the artist on Deviantart if I could use his/her artwork, waiting for a reply.

Don't forget to google Bare Knuckle... I googled Bare Knuckle Arcade Wallpaper and a few hi res pretty cool images popped up. Also search Streets of Rage Wallpaper. Usually desktop wallpaper is hires. There are some pretty cool pieces of art out there..

You could also hire Snaake... that man can totally create something out of thin air as well.

Food for thought.

I like the idea of the city back drop for the marquee but I would loose the little enemies.

Make the logo bigger and try just using the top half of Axel & Blaze see how that looks.

Great theme for a cab.

Have you considered using a larger screen and orientating it vertically in the cab thus keeping the form-factor of a traditional arcade cab and also having the ability to have vertical games in the correct screen size whilst also being able to play horizontal games??

Thanks, I thought I would try something different.  :)

I have definitely thought about it but my need to play modern fighting games which use 16:9 stopped me from going ahead with that idea.

If it was not for wanting to play the modern fighting games then I would have gone with the vertical screen like you suggested for it's obvious benefits.

Made a few adjustments to the marquee following the suggestions.

1. Increased size of the 'Streets of Rage' logo
2. Removed small stage bosses
3. Added Adam!

Let me know what you think.

PS. Received some Photoshop tips from a good friend so I will be tackling the Control panel soon.  :)

Intrested in seeing your design I came across one online but to me this one looks a little busy

Thanks mafiafan123.

I totally agree, that cab looks too busy for me, especially the front of the cab.

I plan to keep the front of my cabinet simple, simple marquee, simple control panel, a plain black lower panel with the addition of a silver chequered kick plate like edekoning's great looking Magneto cab.

Defo getting there, think it needs a little more work tho....

Maybe Mr X looking over the SOR logo like he does in the intro to SOR2?

Think you should use a different image of Axel also it doesn't quite fit in my mind, and maybe make blaze bigger.

To me it's too Anime... I would cut the characters out completely. Revisit it of course for the control panel or side art. But with Marquees (and art) less is more. I would like to see the city background and the logo. Get creative with the side art or the control panel.

I agree with the others the Anime thing does not really fit with the grizzly ness of SOR.
Though I know its hardx to find traditional style high res images!

But try something like this, I just knocked it together in 5 mins so its rough....

Fans, USB Front Input, Power Extension

All suggestions taken onboard  :), I will make some adjustments to the marquee when I get some spare time. I'm a anime fan, hence the anime like characters but I will keep working at it.

I received some more parts for the build.

I purchased two large 140mm fans for cooling the cabinet, I plan to mount one at the top of the cabinet and one at the bottom.

Twin USB faceplate for the front of the cabinet.

8-way surge protected power strip.

I might go ahead with the anime theme but I am willing to try other looks like suggested, I don't want to be narrow minded with my approach.

Lot's of time before I print my artwork so will try lots of different looks.

8 way leads a bit excessive aint it? LOL

Fans are good but you may find twin 140mm a bit noisy!
I would test it before installing them.
I know they say silent run but they still make noise lol

As for the Anime thing, its your cab so go with what you feel dude.
But I would keep it all anime and not mix it with the 16bit stuff as it will look odd.

Definitely overkill for my setup but it was on a deal, was cheaper than the 6-way and 4-way's.

I like Titchgamer's mockup personally.

Anyway, I run them fans in a cabinet (not a arcade) just a cupboard and they sound like a whirlwind when they get going. I don't think they are a bad fan but if you're after silent then these are not that.

gl with the build.
I'm on my last life, best not try anything stupid

Cutting Side Panels

Ready to start work.

Side one complete.

Stencil time.

Two side panels complete, next will be the control panel.

So far so good.

For future ref your best cutting both together so they are identical.
Also something to consider when you do controls, your CP comes to quite a sharp point.
1) that could hurt so make sure you round them edges ;)
2) dont mount the controls to near the front else they wont have enough depth.

Will also keep in mind depth when positioning the controls.

Any suggestions for cabinet width?

It's a 2-player cab and the monitor is 65cm in width so that is the smallest it can be.

I was thinking 70-75cm wide.

Sounds about right.  My cab came out to 32" to allow enough room for the monitor to rotate.  I think it would look better if it were only 28" wide, which comes out to 71cm.

For future ref your best cutting both together so they are identical.

I read somewhere (found it: http://www.arcadecab.com/CabinetPlans2/CabinetPlans2_Cutting_Side_Two.html) that suggested doing a rough cut of side two and then using a router to make it identical to side one. Any opinions on the effectiveness of that technique?

That's how I did the sides for my Half-Shell cabinet. Just make sure your boards are very tightly clamped together so the boards don't slip (it happened to me once or twice.) A flush trim bit will make a perfect duplicate (except for inside corners.)

It's a slim cab.  Just turn it sideways.
.....unless of course it has an aircraft carrier hanging off the front.

Yes your right. My cab is 75cm wide but only 60cm deep so sideways it fits through a standard size door fine.

Tested this last night.

Thanks Badmouth.

PS. No aircraft carrier hanging off the front.  :)

I screwed the sides of mine together, then used the flush bit.  It's only a few small holes to patch.

That's a good idea. Some Bondo is a small price to pay for a perfect cut. I'll remember that on my next project.

Great idea. If finishing with laminate, you probably wouldn't need to do more than sand the holes smooth.
