Projector method has been done by a few of us. I did mine within the machine with mirrors and a pocket projector rated at 800 lumens. I projected onto some polycarbonate at first which I sanded on one side to diffuse. Later I found a projection tv on my neighbors curb and used part of the screen from that, instead. It is great to have the full fill of the marquee area, even with mirrors I did have to use some digital keystone correction, iirc. Compared to an LCD, the image is less bright, and less contrast, and lower resolution. (These are drawbacks if you good artwork scans or new digital art such as using artwork from Steam.) One thing I like better on the projector method is that when using art at 1:1 ratio instead of stretch, the dark areas (black sidebars) seem less pronounced, and actually are smaller if you marquee area has taller ratio than a 1/3 lcd or the worse ones. I do have a 1/3 lcd setup, too. The color, brightness, resolution, are much better, of course. Geometry could be more accurate, too, but I run all the artwork stretched for that one. I will try to setup some side by side photos one of these days. I think another member also has recently done a projector setup using in-part an alcove behind the machine with a higher brightness projector / longer throw projector.
