LED/LCD Marquee
« on: January 22, 2017, 11:34:34 am »
Hi Guys - curious what the options are here if you wanted to make the marquee of a build be an actual LCD/LED vs. static image with backlight. I've seen the "Mimic" build in the projects forum which uses a rather large LCD, wondering if there are smaller options and where one might look for them.

Thanks.

THe ultra wide format LCDs (like Mimic uses) are good for this type of application but cost almost as much or more than the rest of the cabinet build ( around $1000 - $2000 ) so are an expensive way to get this type of addition and why you don't see many systems built using them.

Another option is using a regular format monitor and covering up portions of it with the cabinet (ie. there are a few cabaret style builds using this method on the forum)

A third alternative is using an extremely large monitor in the build and building with it vertical so that the top portion can be set as the marquee and then blocking a portion and then the bottom portion is used for the game screen.

You can sometimes find old slot machine monitors on eBay. I use one from an IGT machine. They go for $1200 new, but I have seen them for under $150.

So I double checked. The one I have is a Kortek, KTL173S-01. It's 17" X 3". It's custom made for the IGT S-AVP slot machine.

New replacement ones go for $1,100 right now. I paid $128, and there was a second one for sale at the time for <$150 as I recall (I should have bought both!). But these slot machines get broken down and sold for repair parts periodically, so keeping an eye out for them on eBay may work.

This one has DVI and VGA inputs. To get a video card to use the oddball shape, you may need to go into advanced driver settings.

Edit: I just went looking, and SuzoHapp seems to have this available soon for $450: https://na.suzohapp.com/products/accessories/KT-173S-01-ASIS

Hi guys - I'm looking for an LCD to replace my marquee as well. I'm trying to find a Litemax Spanpixel SSD2313 23.5" model as markc74 used on his Blip build - http://forum.arcadecontrols.com/index.php/topic,137295.msg1451950.html#msg1451950.

I have a bunch of inquiries out to a few potential distributors and I'm waiting on replies. I did have some luck searching Alibaba, but they're looking at about $1,000 minimum shipped to the U.S. from overseas. I'm a little pessimistic going that route since I'm worried about damage in transit, or not getting exactly what I'm looking for and having no recourse to remedy the situation.

If someone is looking for one the IGT S-AVP panels listed here in the post, there's a used one on eBay right now for a Buy-It-Now of $65 plus $20 shipping. I already pinged them about the size for those that may be interested - the seller said it measures at 19" by 4". That's a little small for what I need. Here is the link if someone else wants to grab it - http://www.ebay.com/itm/232232991010?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

So I found a U.S. supplier for the Litemax Spanpixel SSD2313 23.5" LCD display - although still sourced directly FOB Tawain. They're not cheap at $788 plus about $130 for shipping. They're also end of life and the supplier indicated that they only have about 30 panels left in this particular size. I just ordered one this week - the current ETA for delivery is 6 weeks. I'll post further details if anyone is interested, as well as a status update once I receive the panel.

If you are interested in specs, I've been referencing this PDF - http://www.enertec.qc.ca/files/ipc/p_SSD2313_eng.pdf

You're paying close to $1000 bucks just so the marquee changes when you change a game? Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn.

Yeah, I know. It's a bit much but I've been looking for some ways to re-vamp my cab. It's 10 years old now and I don't have the free time that I once had, to do a new build. I've been working on some new modular controls as well, having just recently added a genuine Star Wars yoke I've been holding onto for over 10 years.

I had looked at ITD (not called or emailed though) and all I could find in the stretched LCD was 15" (too small) or 28" (too big). Is the 26" model something new that they don't have on their site? Any chance you have a spec sheet?

You could pay me to stand there and swap marquees in and out as you change games. I will work for beer and tacos.

With the news of HDMI 2.1 bringing variable refresh rate, 120hz at 4K and dynamic HDR to 2017 TV displays ill probably be making my new cab later this year. The plan i always had was to have the TV positioned vertically in the cab and use the top part of the screen as the marquee and then the lower part for the actual game display area, would this idea maybe work for you?

Here's an idea I've wanted to implement with my arcade. I was shocked at how expensive the ultra wide LCDs were. Why not just buy a small pocket projector (plenty of choices on amazon). Point it at your marquee from behind. You may need to use mirrors if you don't have enough space to fill the entire marquee area. Then on the marquee, place a reverse projection screen on it. Then with a little playing around with sizing, you should be able to display any signage on it, and on the plus side, it fills the whole marquee area!

That's an idea that crossed my mind, too. Could be really awesome if done well, but also a disaster when optics don't line up well.

Many people have brought up the projector idea in the past, but I just don't think in reality it looks as good as you would think in theory.

Projector method has been done by a few of us.  I did mine within the machine with mirrors and a pocket projector rated at 800 lumens.  I projected onto some polycarbonate at first which I sanded on one side to diffuse.  Later I found a projection tv on my neighbors curb and used part of the screen from that, instead.  It is great to have the full fill of the marquee area, even with mirrors I did have to use some digital keystone correction, iirc.  Compared to an LCD, the image is less bright, and less contrast, and lower resolution. (These are drawbacks if you good artwork  scans or new digital art such as using artwork from Steam.)  One thing I like better on the projector method is that when using art at 1:1 ratio instead of stretch, the dark areas (black sidebars) seem less pronounced, and actually are smaller if you marquee area has taller ratio than a 1/3 lcd or the worse ones.  I do have a 1/3 lcd setup, too.  The color, brightness, resolution, are much better, of course. Geometry could be more accurate, too, but I  run all the artwork stretched for that one.  I will try to setup some side by side photos one of these days.    I think another member also has recently done a projector setup using in-part an alcove behind the machine with a higher brightness projector / longer throw projector.

here's an LED matrix option that integrates with RetroPie, not the high res of the LCD but more affordable
