Starfield/Space background? (was: Simple Marquee Request)
« on: January 23, 2004, 05:58:24 pm »
Everyone must be busy :)

But does anyone have some sort of generic starfield background they would be willing to share so I can try my luck again?

Thanks!

Original post:
============
If someone out there is bored and wants some practice... I could use some help on a marquee.

I've tried and tried but it just doesn't look "good."  I guess I am just not the artistic type  :-\

Just wanting a red "Tomorrowland Arcade" on some sort of black background/starfield/space scene (whatever you have got lying around) with the emphasis on Tomorrowland.

Size 26" x 7 1/4"

A good font to use would be Anna from http://www.disneylandsource.com/pc/fonts.html

Maybe a couple of futuristic arcade characters/robots/ships (again whatever you have lying around) but do what you see fit.

Thanks!

I can output a starfield for you. What res will you be outputting? (DPI) If I can get some time, I'll put some artwork together as well. All the type and line art would be vector based. The star sky background would be raster tho'

If you'd like, I could modify my marquee using the ANNA type. It's all vector. See below.

On a related note...Disney auctions on ebay was selling the actual STARCADE neon sign from the Tomorrowland arcade a few months back. 4 feet across. $500. I didn't buy it and now I am one sorry man.  :'( :'( :'(

Here's a go at it. I tried it in red but it just didn't work as well as the blue. Of course as you can see from my previous marquee, I'm biased.  ::) If you'd like I can post the red later. Maybe the starfield could be incorporated inside the Tomorrowland lettering.

That is unbelieveably awesome - Thanks, I love it (especially the space patch logo MAME icon - I was originally going to shy away from saying MAME on it but that is great!).

I think I agree with you on the blue though! I couldn't imagine it in red.

On the dimensions I was erring on the big side on height (I figured with a blank starfield I could trim it any which way to fit) but with the border it might look a little goofy if I have to trim it off - would it be any trouble to make the height 7" and then maybe even size the graphic portion down a little inside that (to accomodate the retainers)?

Oh and as far as DPI I haven't decided which printing service I am going to use yet but classicarcadegraphics.com recommends 300 DPI (though they say they can go up to 600 - will going higher make any noticeable difference do you think?).

Thanks again!

I'm glad you like it! Resizing is absolutely no problem...in fact this was just a draft to no particular size anyway. 300 dpi should be fine. I really doubt any higher resolution would be noticable. I'll revise it the dimensions you gave me and allow for bleed over on all 4 sides.

I'm also glad you like the Mame logo up top. I designed it for my cab since I wanted some reference to MAME without it feeling overbearing. If you change your mind I can easily take it off or change anything else about the file for that matter.

Now that the design has been created, I can layout a matching control panel overlay if you need that as well.

I just read through classicarcadegraphics' site. They can accept an Adobe Illustrator file which means I can keep everything in the vector format it was created in. That means regardless of DPI it'lll print razor sharp at any size.  ;D

The Mame graphic is fine I would just leave it be.

Just out of curiosity is that a black to blue fade or a dark dark blue to lighter blue fade? (my eyes are playing tricks on me)

If you want to have a go at a CP overlay sure give it a try.

I'm building a Lucid based cab so you can use those dimensions.  Something generic might be better for you because I'm planning to have swappable CPs - that way you only have to do one :).

I am planning on a 2 1/2" inch strip at the top with control buttons permanently mounted (pause, coin1, start1, start2, coin2, Escape) -

The rest of the panel will flip out for switching.

FYI The panels will be:

1) 2 joysticks (red) w/6 buttons each (button 1 red, the rest black) with a red spinner in the middle.

2) Tron/Trackball panel (black spinner, red trackball, blue grip joystick)

3) Classic (centered red balltop joystick and lot of buttons for a variety of stuff).

If you have any questions let me know.

Thanks!

Pixelhugger, that MAME logo is fantastic! Any chance I could get the .ai file of that from you? I'd like to incorporate it into my marquee with your permission of course.

Just out of curiosity is that a black to blue fade or a dark dark blue to lighter blue fade? (my eyes are playing tricks on me)

It's a dark navy blue to royal blue fade, so when backlit it should illuminate properly-no grey or ashy areas, although the darkest areas won't be as luminant as the rest. I think that will actually be a pretty cool effect. Very outer space like.

As far as the CP goes....I'll work up a very generic file that matches all the color values of the marquee. That way you'll at least have a consistent look. If I get more time, I can place various other elements-for the joysticks, t-ball, etc. But at the minimum, I'll get you overlay files for the strip up top and the basic swapable panel.

Here's a revision to the marquee to incorporate a starfield. It needs some tweaking so the sky is deep blue and not black, but you get the idea. This incorporates non vector art for the stars and sky so the file would not be emailable (too big). If you prefer the vector only (first example) I'll work on resizing that. Otherwise I'll fix the black in the starfield and set this latest one up as the final file. Just let me know.

Thanks a lot! Your tomorrowland marquee has sparked a bit of inspiration for a marquee I'm working on right now. I'll post it in the artwork forum once I get it to a version I'm happy enough with to share.

The starfield one is right on the money :)

Just the basic CP (non-labled) will be great - don't worry about joystick/buttons etc as I don't have that quite figured out 100% myself yet.

I'll send you a PM in a few moments w/ some ftp info if you want to transfer it that way.

Thanks!

OK- so I've managed to create the starfield version while maintaining everything as vectors-including every little star. So the file won't be so huge after all.

I did have to change the layout a bit to accomodate the actual aspect ratio (I designed to a much taller measurement initially). The actual marquee is much wider so take a look at the new layout and if all is good, I'll FTP it. (Though I could actually just email it...total file size is around 3.7MB) :)

Here's a less Saturn intensive version ;) I added glow to the planets and to give them a bit more depth I tucked a moon behind one. I also tweaked the Mame logo to add glow to the orbiting electROMs and modified the Mame type color. I'll probably email you any future revisions to save BYOAC bandwidth.  :)

Sorry forgot to reply - Yep I got it and sent it off to classic arcade graphics - they said that it looks like it will turn out good.  As soon as it comes I will post a pic  of the final result (and one with it lit in my cab when it is done - got it to a free standing state today - yay).

I can't thank you enough for all of your work on it but I'll try:

Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.
Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.
Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You. Thank You.

etc etc etc

Here is a quick pic of the final product (on a not quite final cab)

Actually the pic turned out a little blurry - it is quite sharp and nice looking - I'll take some better pics when it is not 2AM :)

I'm going to trim the t-molding a little as it is just slightly cutting off the bottom of the border but other than that it looks great - major kudos to Pixelhugger for all his hard work!
