Sega upright Outrunners steering wheel issue
« on: January 17, 2017, 03:59:04 pm »
Hey there!
I'm brand new here, thanks for having me!  ;D

I can't seem to find a solution to my problem anywhere...

I've got a Sega upright Outrunners on which I just can't drive straight.
In the Input Tests, I can see that it either goes right or left. No centered position...

In the manual, they say something like the centered position should be between F8 and F8h or something (I don't really remember, and i'm not at my workshop right now... :embarassed:) but I just can't access these values.

I tried to move the 5k potentiometer of the wheel, and basically, it's on the left, and turning it, there's a point where it shifts directly to the right...

I can't figure out where to look as everything seems to work fine apart from that...

If anyone could give me a lead, that'd be very much appreciated!!  ;D

Welcome aboard, Wylcot.   ;D

I tried to move the 5k potentiometer of the wheel, and basically, it's on the left, and turning it, there's a point where it shifts directly to the right...
That sounds like a problem with the A/D (analog to digital) converter circuitry on the PCB or (remote possibility) a problem with the potentiometer.

The easy place to start is testing the potentiometer.

Set your multimeter to Volts DC and hook one of the leads to the wiper (center tab) and the other to either ground or 5v. (one of the outer tabs)

If the pot is good:

  1. When the wheel is centered, the multimeter should read about 2.5v.

  2. The further you turn the wheel from center, the closer the multimeter reading should be to 0v or 5v.

Well, heres one that beats the hell out of me.

I have connected an old steering wheel with a 15 pin plug, through a Super Joy Box 7adapter  to Mame.

Changed all the joystick settings and all works but the Outrun (original) car refuses to  travel at maximum speed now. Its stuck at 240.

What on earth could cause that in a controller?

You gotta shift.

No, I have shift. You can't get to 240 in low gear anyway.  its not quite maximum in low gear and not quite maximum in high..

The software's not lagging. The music's playing normally. I'm not tyre screeching round corners..

It's just frantically wobbling between 239 and 240 with the throttle held down. I can't figure out how this is possible.

Did you calibrate the pedals in windows and the game's in-game service menu (assuming it has one, haven't messed with it in a long time).

I'll have a tinker, maybe even start from afresh.

Ah, on reflection the accelerator isn't an on/off button is it. It's a lever of varying speeds depending how far down you press it. I bet that's where I'm going wrong.

Oh well, calibrating the already recognised steering wheel buttons worked. Don't understand why it worked but, it worked.

Many thanks.
