Orizzle, I sent you a PM on the kit, let me know what you think. Thanks.

Never heard of this R2/R3 CD.

Re: your PM, keep the topic going here.  Your XL controller  should work just fine with Maxx.  You'll need a new motherboard, ioboard (I don't think XL will work with Maxx - someone correct me if I'm wrong), key, and hard  drive. You can use any hard drive and install the software yourself.

If you can wait, try to find a good price on these items.  Every so often a Maxx motherboard/ioboard combo will go for $25 on eBay.

I replaced it with what I had laying around.  I grabbed a couple drives out of my garage, and the first one "worked".  It was a Sony CRX140E.  It was recognized in BOIS, as well as the startup.

Just an update, my hardware came in on Wednesday, and as of last night, I have a working Megatouch XL, running Titanium.  You'd think after years of tearing things apart, I would have learned to take pictures of wiring routing, and connections before I disassembled things, but I guess I enjoy the pain...

There was no jumper on the HDD when it arrived, so, it took some trial and error to get it working.  Just in case anyone else has issues in the future, here is what happened with all 5 jumper settings on my HDD.

CS (closest to the Molex) - Drive recognized in BIOS, the system would boot up as far as initializing the touch screen.  Then I would get a message in pink text stating "Hard drive copy error"
Slave - Recognized in BIOS, but gave me "Bad command or file name"
Master - Not recognized in BIOS, and gave me the insert system disc message
Blank - same results as Master
PM2 - WORKING MEGATOUCH!!!!!!!!!

Now, from what I'm reading about the PM2 setting, it looks like it may be indicative of a pending drive failure, but I guess time will tell.

So, back to my original issue.  I changed the jumper setting over on the I/O board, and swapped out the HDD for the CD-ROM, and tried to run the CD that came with my machine.  I'm still getting the boot disc error.  I was successful in making an ISO of the CD with IMGburn, so from what I read, that means my CD is ok.  Do you guys have any ideas?

An original megatouch xl with cdrom boots from a romdisk on the io adapter.
That romdisk can be disabled with a jumper on the io board.
Old computers boards like the megatouch ones can't boot directly from cdrom. It's not implemented in the bios.
The DS1230Y is a non volatile sram chip with buildin battery. It's used to keep the settings and the highscores. The protection key is made by Dallas as well. Some people thought you needed a new security key instead of a new non volatile sram chip...The eprom chip next to it is the bios extension for the flashdisk. The flash chip next to it is the disk itself containing the romdos.
So if you have a boot disk not found, it's related to the io board and has nothing to do with the cdrom.
