Newest Supported LOW PROFILE Video card?
« on: December 29, 2016, 10:28:44 pm »
I know this has been asked before, and the support sections now say up to a HD7xxx series card?
But what about newer cards such as this?
https://www.asus.com/au/Graphics-Cards/R5230SL2GD3L/

Is there something stopping them from being used? (only asking as they're a lot easier to get..)

They don't work, the driver Calamity patched probably won't install. At a guess, it's because the original driver is an older version, and not compatible with newer chips.

Calamity has indicated he plans to update the crt_emudriver package, but the update to include 5, 6 & 7000 series cards is only a year old. I doubt we'll see the next major revision anytime soon. No criticism intended there, but it's unpaid work. He'll get to it when he gets to it, and the community will owe him even more when he does :)

I picked up all of my cards on ebay or gumtree/CL/kijiji

EDIT: You *may* still be able to use VMMaker and ArcadeOSD from the emudriver package, and thus use low-resolutions for Switchres, but you'll be limited to 10 modelines - is it? Or is it higher? either way you may have to edit the user-modes.ini file before attempting modeline install.

I had a 7750 which only kind of worked-- it has an issue with the drivers that crtemudriver 2.0 is based on which causes the display to cut out and not come back.  I'm unsure if it affects everybody with that card or 7xxx cards in general, but I did find some info on it that suggested it was a known issue with those drivers.  I no longer had the problem after I updated to the newest AMD drivers, and it does not happen on my 6450.

6450 was powerful enough for older 2D consoles and games, but my intention was to create a box that played most SD content up to the Wii.  7750 actually gets me to the Wii U for some titles.

In any case, outside of the really low-tier cards (5450/6450 which I still see in stock at brick and mortar stores), you will probably be looking at the second-hand market.  I got my low profile 7750 on ebay for 40 bucks, which is about what I paid for my 6450 new.

I did notice that the new AMD drivers include a "Create Custom Resolution" option which allows you to create a custom resolution and adjust H.timing and such.  I haven't tried to see if that will work for displaying native SD resolutions accurately on my CRT, because the whole project has kind of taken a backseat to some other things I have going on.

Which stores are these?
I can't find anything on staticice except for HD5450s available in VIC and NSW (nothing local)
No HD6450/7450s at all..
Even second hand i'm not finding much at all...

Australia if it matters..

In some cases, if not all, the driver will refuse to accept anything below 480 lines. However you can add these modes to the EDID instead using CRU.

GM / switchres won't be able to modify the vertical refresh in most cases, GM splash screen just show the mode the driver is supposed to accept (even it may not be accepted).

I've been looking into this recently (with the help of Calamity) with partial success, however it might be a good option when you can't or don't want to use modified drivers as EDID low resolutions resolutions aren't rejected.

I think i might go for a couple of HD7450
there's not a great deal of room in the case either, and these seem to be quite short..
Any issues in relation to CRT drivers with HD7450 i should take into consideration first?

The card seems to have only a DVI-port. Can the usage of an adapter causes any problems on a CRT?

By the pictures online it looks like a DVI-I which carries real analogue signals, so you shouldn't have any problems with a simple DVI-I>VGA adapter (not a converter)

BTW glad this thread resurrects because I wanted to ask the question, what are relatively recent low-profile AMD cards ? (newer than HD series, saw a RX 560 somewhere and that's it...)

Lately I've grabbed a Sapphire RX 570 'ITX' which is more a shortened rather than low profile form factor, it'd still be too big in several kinds of cases.

With so many manufacturers and variants it's not so easy to find really compact AMD references, some are pretty obscure.

I mean up to high-end material, I'm not into the 'cheapo as you can' type of setup since I also use high-res flat panels which require powerful gpu's.

Radeon R7 240:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=14-137-320&ignorebbr=true

I’d go to New Egg and filter for, ATI/AMD, and Low Profile  cards.  Then you can see a lot of the available options.  Might also want to consult these rescources:

GPU benchmarks scores:
https://gpu.userbenchmark.com

List if ATI/AMD cards in chronological order:

Now this thread exists, it'd be nice if, for every suggestion, it was mentioned if the card uses passive cooling. I believe it's a key factor when looking for "low profile".

There aren't many are some featuring passive cooling indeed, so far in more ancien series I've met the MSI R6450-2GD3H/LP and Sapphire 100322L, which are two HD 6450's.
Also found several passive R5 230, R7 240 and R7 250.

So far then from various manufacturers;

R5 230 (passive available)
R7 240 (passive available)
R7 250 (passive available)
RX 550
RX 460
RX 560

The latter two (three?) exist declined in 4GB versions which makes them the most powerful as far as I've seen (no analogue out tho)

That leaves the R7 240 & 250 as the top analogue performers, the latter seems more powerful on paper but afaik comes only in 1GB and comes in 1Gb and 2GB, while the 240 is found in 2GB and 4GB (real VGA out on the 4GB version tho?), not sure wich one of the two would perform better on a high-res display, though that aspect doesn't matter much for a 15KHz setup (more for an eventual versatile setup projet)

I'm sure maybe there are more, though afaik nothing hitting near mid-range performance by today's full-size standards.

EDIT: found the R7 250 Low Profile also exists in 2GB from XFX and Dell OEM, though no passive. Still, could it be a winner in the analogue category ?

Thanks for the research. I have a Sapphire HD-6570 with passive cooling, though even if just 1-GB, if I recall, you can add it to the list. (We also need a list of dual-analog output cards, now I think about it.)

I won't build a precise list detailing brand, individual model part numbers and specs, it's just an overview of what I've seen around, but just from that it's pretty clear what to expect; up to which series models you'll find passive editions, and analogue, and then which are the most powerful/advanced depending on what one wants.

Regarding the memory size as far as I know it matters in regards to bandwidth and fillrates, which you can probably relate to every other spec but I think those with more GB are a bit more powerful for the purpose of filling higher resolution displays, so it shouldn't matter much for CRT setups, only for the eventuality of a double-purpose setup which would also be used for a LCD in a different configuration.

(Not that you should expect much from even the R7 250 2GB on a lcd, or it better be a modest one like an old school 19" 5:4
if lcd is a priority then for a full-hd or equivalent I would only consider the RX 560 4GB but even that one will struggle at higher frame_delay and hlsl combinations
apparently low profile AMDs remain rather poor performers compared to the nVidia offer in that category)

For dual analogue I bet you mean with two analogue outputs like VGA & DVI-I ? I've seen some with only DVI-I, some with both, pictures of the outputs while browsing and a double-check reading the specs will confirm.

The "add it" part was not meant to be taken literally. Your list is nice enough already.

Ha ha no, well I sometimes accidentally use a rather dry tone that wasn't intended lol, I'm not building a detailed list just out of laziness actually.

I'll add one more thing to my observations though; unlike full-size models some particular variants of these low profile cards aren't easy to find, even scratching the bottom ends of eBay. After they're old, long discontinued, and low profile is rather niche.

I haven't seen any dual analogue card past the HD 5000 series.

Important note: posts reporting GM issues without a log will be IGNORED.
Steps to create a log:
 - From command line, run: groovymame.exe -v romname >romname.txt
 - Attach resulting romname.txt file to your post, instead of pasting it.

On that topic, it's weird how some cards feature both VGA and DVI, and while the DVI connector is full, it actually supports only digital...

Like that 250 here for instance: http://www.xfxforce.com/en-us/products/amd-radeon-r7-200-series/amd-radeon-r7-250-core-edition-r7-250a-elf4

(note: this particular model being a 4GB 250 makes it the most powerful low profile I've seen to feature at least one analogue out)

If we looked closely many R series look like rebadged, slightly updated HD series. I think the main advantage of these newer versions isn't really in the raw performance but maybe the version of the driver and related software side of things they support, plus their age/availability.

I've found a LP R7 250 once, planning to build a tiny SFF for emulation, but it was dead on arrival.

Before that I've also acquired a normal sized R7 250...which had a defect. Unuseable.

Today I believe the 250 is a cursed model (or i have sh*t luck)  :banghead:
