Help with bits for t molding for UK
« on: December 18, 2016, 03:55:52 pm »
I am really struggling to find the correct bits for my router for cutting the edge for the t moulding trim.

Ive heard its often cheaper to buy from the US but i dont have a clue what im supposed to be buying. Im considering buying either 15mm or 18mm mdf.

Would appreciate any help or advice as any links etc ???

I got my t-molding, and bit, from t-molding.com in the US (shipped to the UK). I don't remember it taking especially long to arrive.

They did a "Whiteside" bit and arbor IIRC. My mdf is 18mm thickness and I'm led to believe that is what I'd need. 18mm is 3/4"

What size slot does the vendor you are buying the t-molding from say it needs ??? Not all same size molding uses the same size slot - so before anyone can tell you where to find the cutting blade they would need to know specifically what size blade you need (otherwise it might be too smal or too large for your specific t-molding.)

For example on t-molding.com they have this pic

Which shows the slot size as 3/32" which would be 0.0938" or 2.3813mm - so you would need a corresponding 3/32" slot cutter blade like this one : ( https://www.t-molding.com/whiteside-slot-cutter-6700a.html )

One reason no one has responded is that most US vendors do not have 15 or 18mm molding ( see attached image ) so not sure what size barb those would have ! But normally what ever vendor you buy the molding from will carry the cutter needed for their product so find the product you intend to use and check what size barb it has and then post it here so others might be able to help find the proper size cutting blade or order both the t-molding and slot cutter from the same vendor to ensure it is the correct size for their product.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0002TUCRA/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1 , just a 9/16" slotting bit, should work with whatever T molding you use, also might want to get a rubber mallet or atleast wrap a rag around your hammer when tapping in the t-molding (notice i said tap in and not bang)

Good luck

ok so ive been looking into it and been told 18mm mdf is going to be the best but converted to inches the closest t moulding i can find is 3/4 t moulding which i plan on buying here - > https://www.arcadeworlduk.com/products/Red-3-Quarter-Inch-T-Molding.html

Can i ask with that, what bits do i need to buy as im still a little confused ?

also may i ask essexmame, what thickness of wood, t moulding and bit did you order exactly ?

would really appreciate some help

thanks

Hey Liam.

The one on Amazon is the same as the 2 separate pieces you provided.

As long as it cuts a width of 1/16" and about 1/2" deep you'll be find with the 3/4" t-Molding. 1/16" is tight enough but not tight enough to split the wood.

I don't know if this would be cheaper for you but this is where I bought my router bit:
http://www.mlcswoodworking.com/shopsite_sc/store/html/smarthtml/pages/bt_slot.html
Item ##5341. Pretty much the same as the Amazon bit.
