Robocop Vs Terminator
« on: December 05, 2016, 10:52:02 pm »
Update! This build has been completed updated pics on 3rd page. Cheers!

Hi Everyone,

Seems like it's been forever and I'm about to start on another build I've been trying to find either a broken cabinet, cabinet shell or debating going bartop.

I would like for it to be a 2 player layout currently I've decided on a theme and about to order buttons and encoders.

The theme I was going for is Frank Miller's adaptation of Robocop vs Terminator something among the lines of this picture.

Any thoughts are appreciated positive or negative this will not be another coin ops build. I'm going Hyperspin this time a little more headache but I'm fine with that.

Anything Frank Miller inspired is ok by me.

Thinking of going with an Evo XR 2 Barton kit from Haruman. I'm thinking red tmolding. Not sure button color though and I've never done led buttons (worried about quality,  I normally use happ) but think they look neat. Also maybe looking for someone to help me with artwork hire or not. I'll update as it starts coming together

I like the theme idea.
With that in mind I think I would go for Chrome T moulding and Chrome Bezelled buttons, Give it that Metallic look ;)

As for the LED's again they may fit nicely in with the feel of the cab.

If the above art example were to be in the side art... I know that I would not be able to resist drilling out the Terminator's eye and burying one red LED under it.

Is there anything wrong with ebay encoders? Or led buttons?  Or does anyone know a great reseller?

Cant comment on the Ebay ones as I have never used them.

But I have used the Ultimarc Ultra Lux LED buttons and they are pretty good (also can be got with chrome bezzels ;) ).
Ultimarc also do a good controller which the Ultra Luxs just plug into.

The ones from GGG are rated good to but again not used them.

^ Just a note, that kit is designed for Sanwa controls, but I can switch it over to Happ style no problem (and no extra charges for customization).

Holy Crap I like your thinking!

I have decided on this bartop kit from HaRuMaN  I just do not know about the control panel I was thinking chrome led buttons but do not know which color etc.

As for a Marquee maybe something like the wording that appears on this.

Maybe add this in somewhere I just do not want it to be too busy

Something with an apocalyptic theme?

I will be using HAPP Joysticks.

Well if you go with RGB buttons you can have them any colour you want ;)

Red Eye is a great idea though!!

Well I started to make this another Xbox build after flashing the TSOP and loading hypervision I changed my mind. I am going to go a different route this time,  I've seen a few builds on here but really trying to figure what would best run the following pc setup

Hyperspin
With GameCube ps2 and wii emulation and obviously mortal combat x. I think the GameCube and ps2 are the most demanding? Dual core or i5?  Anyone who has experience care to share or recommend a board and processor?

Well my kit from HaRuMaN came in looks great I started the process of putting it together. Now just either have to settle on artwork so I can figure out tmolding and button colors. Thought of RGB but not really wanting that but will do backlit buttons.

Also the control panel layout I'm wondering what to do as far as hyperspin controls like exit etc. I have 3 buttons below controls thought of 2 lightup credit buttons and a USB port in the middle in case I wanted to do a controller

Thoughts on hardware before I order, No donor pc and decided not to use xbox.

Here is the link https://pcpartpicker.com/list/dRDY2R

Wondering about the CPU Color and Fan placement as well.

Seems like there is plenty of space, Im also wanting a more beefy pc due to steam games as well.

:P Completely forgot about that I was thinking maybe a 120GB http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16820173150 for the main OS and the 2TB Drive will be coin ops etc

Not sure what others do, but i run my frontend, emulators and support software off the SSD. Have all the game files and assets on a networked drive which works absolutely fine. Good decision on buying for purpose rather than cobbling together - wish I'd done the same!

I figured long as the OS boots fine I dont mind a slight load time on games.

I figure $100 ish for a disk drive vs $600 for a 2tb SSD. However I hope the 2TB drive never dies  :dizzy:

 :dunno

Changed my build was slightly cheaper but will still run the steam games etc I want and allow for upgrades.

Hopefully everything will fit

Only thing left to do is add in a monitor, T-Molding buttons/wires, Graphics etc. I have my front end already setup from an old build that I never used so hopefully not a lot of changes will have to be done.

I also have some spare led strip lighting I was thinking of wiring together in parallel attached to some painted acrylic (Ill try to get this together soon to show what I am talking about)

Sheeeet. My os/roms/vids/marquees all fit on 1 60gb ssd. Pretty sure i have 30gb left over too  :dizzy:

I think you could make something pretty cool with the ocp logo you showed.

Well I plan on also adding an hdmi out so I can split the image if needed to another source as well just thinking outside the box.

Artwork is in development Malenko was nice enough to help me with this

Tonight I made a light for the marquee but I do not know if it will work please don't be too harsh as it's something I saw and just tried throwing together although I'm wondering if it will put out enough light???

It's just scrap plexi I had and some 12v leds left over I would paint the back black and trim to fit behind speakers?

Some stuff came in today waiting to order buttons and T Molding still need to figure out speakers

Anyone know one that's less than 4 inches wide that sounds decent? Was thinking 3 1/2 in speakers with amplifier

Tried something new.

Instead of painting bezel I used wife's cricket to cut vinyl.

I think it's alright

I will probably redo the Vinyl as I do not like the cut lines in the middle maybe more to the side as it wont be as noticeable.

Im also thinking of doing a speaker hack with a portable speaker as the PC ones I have found just do not sound right or do not fit easily even decased.

Has anyone ever used one of the speakers out of these for a build if you have please post  ;)

I used one of the round little iHome speakers in my Crazy Kong build. Worked great. I'd say if you're wanting stereo sound that'd be a good choice.

Just want to throw it out there that Win7 and Skylake processors do NOT play well together.

Found a fix if anyone else ever runs into this issue just use this tool.

I went with win7 for emu compatibility among other things I just like it  :P

Well my old drive was way too loud and slow so I swapped for another SSD. Just started with wires and secured power supply with L brackets I think I had seen someone else do this but I did not want to drill into the actual psu case.

Things left
Setup Frontend  *wip
Buttons/Joysticks
Artwork & Tmolding *wip
Fuse and power strip
Lighting and speakers

Rear fans? Maybe 3 exhaust 80 mm? Suggestions?

Trying not to rush myself lol

Thanks to Malenko for the art and prints I will post some better pictures once more progress is made. Unfortunately I've had a few slow downs lately with work and just life in general.

Don't mind the art I found at comic con

Now I'm trying to decide on led buttons I already have them but not sure on colors? All red with chrome or should I maybe do a blue because of the CPO? Maybe player one or two white ? Open to suggestions.

Thinking of these speakers

Will run a kinter amp again worked great last time.

Ok so I'm confused this fight stick is different than the others I used instead of one part with the square and ring on bottom it has 3 parts and a ring to lock.

My question is is the way I have correct? The right joystick seems to feel correct or should I do it like the left one in picture how it came packaged.  Confused if the big end goes towards switches. I only have this low res picture and can not make out which direction it faces.

Help??

Also here's my thoughts on button color and layout

Looks like a Happ Super knockoff.

This diagram shows the order that the pieces go -- shaft, sleeve, dust washer, cone (narrow end toward the sleeve), base, actuator, C-clip.

For 8-way operation, put the larger end of the hourglass-shaped actuator next to the C-clip.
(larger end of actuator can hit both switches for diagonal)

For 4-way operation, put the smaller end of the hourglass-shaped actuator next to the C-clip.

Just follow the dotted line.

Scott! Thanks!

My last one was actually happ I thought the switches and stick would at least be but it appears they are some call B. Lee  (Bruce Lee ? Or it maybe a its a popular brand I've just never heard of? They seem like an extra loud switch but it appears to be an "eBay" special lol. Regardless I'll try them out for a bit if bad I'll just replace the switches.

Thanks again for the diagram

It's a little tight but starting to really take shape :-)

Only issue for me is Xpadder and Joy to key.

An example is MKX does not allow Xin controller encoder to have to players using arcade sticks it bugs out.

I setup xpadder in this case and have player one as keyboard and player 2 as joystick in game works great but in menu and player selection it's a nightmare navigating using actual buttons I do not understand why sticks work in menus but not character select.

I think they joystick and keyboard are fighting.

Anyone have suggestions as far as other emulators in hyperspin I'm just trying to configure them inside vs xpadder

Update fixed JoytoKey for all emulators and hyperspin itself.

Just set the program to open with hyperspin created a .bat to terminate after. Had an issue with it closing after selecting an emulator but didn't realize you have two more profiles one for in game which I currently only have set for hyperpause exit etc and the other that loads back when the front end is loaded.

Anyone know any tricks to have emulators do multiple inputs that are not natively supported?

Example Joypad encoder and an actual controller if I wanted to just turn one one and use it

I don't use Happ anymore, I use the IL eurostick.  So very nice.

That looks very similar to the happ competition I know it definitely felt better than these sticks I'm using on this build. I may change out later.

Has anyone used this switch it says it has a built in surge protection. I'm not the best with electrical and I just wanted to cut off a cord on a power strip and wire to this. Any input would be helpful :) thanks!

See pics of switch
