Optic for Laserstar CD wall mount
« on: December 01, 2016, 12:07:35 am »
I was able to get my speakers hooked up, and all the errors cleared
Was working with no problems for about two weeks. We were listening to some music, then it stopped     . I walk over and look at it, and its picking up the disc, spins for a sec, stops, then spins again for a sec. Rejects the cd, puts it back on and tries one more time ,then moves to the next selection. Repeats this until its done with the songs I had queued.

So, after a bit of reading I figured it was a dirty Optic. Tried cleaning it, no luck...Still the same. Back to reading, figured it was a bad optic. Determined it is a CD Pro-2 ,so ordered a new OP. Installed it tonight, and its still doing the same thing  :censored:

Any thing else I should check? Thank you

sometimes the CD's get a layer of dust and smoke on them. they look clean, but at the optical level, they cannot be read. I spritz them down with a cleaner similar to "409" and run them under water to rinse off the cleaner and dirt. it's a long shot and I figure you've done this already, but for the sake of covering all the bases.

can you confirm the laser is operating?

you can check by removing the selected disk and watching while it tries to read.

it should move the lens in and out trying to focus on the disk and a tiny red dot should be visible in the eye. if the eye isn't moving or the dot isn't visible, check your sled connections.

if the laser is on and working and the eye is properly focusing...  :dunno not really sure it should work then.

can you go into the service menu and confirm a disk read error exists in the log? or is it maybe another error?

Thanks for the reply
I'll try that when I get home. While it was down as  I figured out the speakers (Thank you again), I replaced a lot of the disc and cleaned the rest. Then scanned all of them.
When the player quit working, one of the things I read was clean the optic, and do a new initialize on the disc. So I tried a full one before I replaced the optic, and tried another after replacing the optic. At the moment it thinks there are no disc. If I try to play something it just says not allowed and will not pick up a disc. Not sure how to see if its working, since it wont pick up a disc. Do a initialize again ?
On a side note. When I was doing a full initialize, I noticed a few of the disc would spin normal instead of the 1 sec. thing... But, none of them would play either

if a CD has been marked as a read error, it will spit back a not allowed. if you reset the errors it should try again.

I tried to scan some disc and the optic has no light or the skid does not move. Only life I saw was the optic pulsing up and down during the scan. I pulled it back apart to check all the connections... still just pulses

The CDPRO and CDPRO2 use different optical pickups. You sure you ordered the right one?

Sometimes when a player goes bad, it takes out the mech control board with it.

the term is will take out the mech board..
another thing that gets me is this lose term pulled it apart.
exactley what did u pull apart ? the optics board from the control board ?
if so did u not see the difference ?
was the optic u replaced it with new ?
did u pre foucs it ?
or did u replace the full complete optic and board ? (its called a unit)
hint they are factory matched, and if u are doing bench work u have a scope and signal gen to make the optics talk proper

Nowadays, we just get a repair/exchange player straight from the source: Enco Systems.

https://www.encosystems.net/

Of course you can also purchase a brand new player from them too, but it's expensive at about $500 now.

For us it's easier and cheaper just to get a repair/exchange. Enco gives a warranty on all players they sell, new or repaired/exchanged.

Back in the day, my boss wisely decided on only having one brand of jukebox on our route: Rowe-Ami. By standardizing on one brand, we only had to stock parts for one brand. Plus we only had to attend one service clinic held every year at the local distributor's office.

We purchased the "Rowe CD100 Suitcase" parts supply portable kit. It had just about every spare circuit board, assembly, amplifier, bill acceptor, etc we could ever need for "on location" repairs. Sure that kit cost $2,000, but it sure came in very handy. We could have a jukebox back up and running in 10 minutes on location with that kit.

When I looked up the difference between the different models , mine matched the cd pro 2. That was the optic that I ordered. It looked exactly like the one that was in it. Pulled it apart... disassembled it to make sure the two " ribbon cables "  on the control board were fully seated
Difference? There were none.
Yes, it was new optic
No I did not pre focus it. First I heard of it
Nope , no scope or signal generator. Not even a bench , a pool table :)

Thanks for the link Ken. I ran across that site when I was looking for the optics.  I figured  just replacing the optics would  be a quick fix.

u see the where it has been done what u are doing
the usual rule of thumb is to replace the optic and its control board
them small controls on that board are there for a reason

Thanks for the reply Ed. So , you have to replace the optic and control board together ? If not , then you have to "pair" them ?

Which small controls are you referring to ? The ribbon connections ?

as a rule
the control board has 3 controls on it
foucs preset
foucs final set
control
as a rule it is advised to replace both in pair, unless u have the laser disk (it's self) service manual
along with a scope and at min a test disk (not a burnt copy) but the actual factory calb. disk
u see these controls calb. the laser platform.

Would any of the three being out of spec cause the optic light not try to read a disc or cause the sled not to move ?

100%
cd control logic is this
cd--> call to load cd --->done ---->call to spin to see if disk is there (read-control-track)----># of songs x--xxx ---place cd back
report,cd is loaded and #of tracks has read into memory
next cmd ?
durning this time the laser (must foucs on a 200micron (control trak))
these adjustments balance out the laser for that and alot of other reasons
but that is the basic
