Particle Board Primer
« on: November 22, 2016, 08:51:50 am »
Sorry for a bit of a duplicate post, but I am looking to get feedback on just this question.

I stripped down the vinyl to expose the particle board. Should I be using a oil-based primer or is a latex-based ok?

I have seen conflicting suggestions as I scour the web. Will the latex-based primer cause the particle board to swell?

Thanks!

Latex will be fine - In fact in California it is not legal to sell oil based paints, so you can not buy them.  However if you live where they still sell oil based Kilz original (oil based) is a great product !

I wish I wouldn't see anyone telling me that is would be much better to use oil-based and that water-based might cause the particle board to swell. Posted this question elsewhere for additional coverage. Want to make sure I get this right...

I wanted to use a high build primer to fill in the imperfections in the particle board caused when pulling off the vinyl...

I will say that when I was sanding my Q*Bert this summer prepping for paint my sweat would cause the PB to swell.  A guy on KLOV had said the same thing in a thread and I did not believe him.

So did you end up using an oil-based primer? If so, which one?

I used this BIN Primer spray paint that someone on KLOV recommended.  It worked very well.  I rolled latex over it.

Thanks. So you went spray on over roll on. I wonder what the differences are. I was planning to roll on the primer. They make that same primer in a non spray...

I've not used the roll-on but I suspect it would work just fine.  Probably be cheaper too.  I bought a lot of spray cans. ;D

A little late but I thought I'd come in considering I've used both latex and oil based primers on mdf. Definitely go with an oil based primer, not so much because of the swelling (it wasn't really an issue for me) but because the mdf doesn't soak up the primer as much and therefore required less coats of primer and paint to get good coverage.
