Mega Man and Duck Tales (woo hoo)
« on: November 14, 2016, 10:45:28 pm »
Okay,   I've got two new scratch build ideas coming that Id like to finish before summer 2017.  Life needs to settle down right now...and its pretty ambitious for me, but Id really like to see them come to fruition.  I'm just going to put both builds in one thread, to save myself and this board trouble.

Originally, I was going to just focus on DT this upcoming year....but 34K and I were talking the other night over a Robotron project we are working on and he really got me excited about the Mega Man idea.  Also, for the last few months I've been messaging with BYOAC Member Sokignano about the concept, and his enthusuiam and ideas for his own Mega Man project.  I figured aid give it a shot as well.

First off, I know Mega Man and Duck Takes are Capcom games....and not Nintendo created games.  However, I don't have very many memories of NES a growing up....but DT and MM were definitely a part of what I do have.  Those games, plus LOZ, Mario Brothers series, and Rush'n'attack were really the only games I remember playing a lot.   So....Duck Tales and Mega Man will be going in custom Nintendo cabinets.

Not sure what I'm doing to run the games. I have the colors and designs in my head already. I have already produced a roughed out speaker grill for Duck Tales.  It's is a really far off departures from the Niintendo slotted speaker style....but I like it....plus I think it'll be fun.  I started cutting wood for the speaker grill for Mega Man today....but have not settled on a design,  I would love to hear concepts for ideas for the speaker grill.  Sokignano and I thought maybe a Mega Man helmet? I could so the standard Nintendo 7 slot....but that's kinda boring.

Both cabs will recieve custom paint...and I have a pretty solid idea for art for both of them....but as all works in progress goes...I'm sure it'll evolve.

So here we go.....hope these don't take 18 months! Atleast I have the winter to design the artwork.

for the mega man speaker any way to do the 7 slot shaped like the helmet?  or curved slots for the helmet shape? if that makes any sense.

Two of my favorite games as well.
Love the "$" speaker grill idea and I like both suggestions of either the energy box or helmet ideas for the mega man.

Can't wait for the pics to start coming in...

Still mad you live in Cheyenne, Wyoming I see.

Relax friends, I still have ZELDA...and will probably not sell it. Anyways, can't blame a guy for trying, can you?  I don't know about you guys but always lose money when I build these things.  I think we'd all like all like to make some money for our time so we can build future projects....that would be ideal wouldn't it?

Sick! That's a cool image, and the perfect shape. Thanks! Everything I was looking at for the helmet was straight on so I was trying to decide how that'd work. I like the three quarter shot.  It'll be a tough decision....

I am not sure the helmet would translate well. However, I have a lot of faith in Wyo.  The bezel, CPO, marquee and side art for each of these will be rad.

WOW! That's awesome! Thanks so much for doing that!  This is why I love you guys.

So, here's what I was thinking.  I cut about 7 speaker panels tonight.  Duck Tales is totally going a different direction from the whole "slot" look.  I love that slot helmet design....but would it be cooler, and more unique to try and do a negative shape of the helmet graphic on the wood panel instead? Or the E.   Tedious to cut....or keep it simple with the design Thomas made? (Which is awesome) I do tend to over complicate things. Ha

Also, so you guys kinda know the direction I'm heading as far as colors for the cabinets.  Ducktales, Im envisioning a purple metallic flake paint job with gold chrome t molding.  The artwork will be colorful, gold chrome highlights, coins, diamonds and other jewels and all the characters mixed in...to give it a "vault" like feel.

MegaMan, I'm thinking a blue metallic cabinet with contrasting blue t-molding (like the MegaMan character). I would like to incorporate blue chrome vinyl into the artwork somehow...which would be more subtle.

Thinking about it....I think I'm going with Thomas's design.  I really like the simplicity of it. Thank you!  I will probably draw out an "E" design for you guys consideration as well....but I think the helmet has me sold.

Why purple? Uncle Scrooge wore red and blue.

What about a riveted panel look like the vault? (or are you trying to keep them one color like NES cabs?)

I was thinking purple because of the NES box. Also, purple is the color of wealth/royalty.  Also, because chances DK:ultimate needs a friend. Ha

Also, it's funny you should mention the bank vault because I was thinking about airbrushing rivets and sheet metal all over it to look like a vault...but I thought it would be to much.

Really? Well cool. It's crazy that that concept is already out there! Thanks again!

And just because I like to over complicate things, I drew out a couple conceptual speaker designs tonight.  The black represents the negative space and the shaded pencil represents a recessed/fluted areas for depth.  I think I'm gonna try and make both.  I like the subtleness of the "E" but the Challenge of making the face seems kinda fun. Not sure how it'll go. We'll see.

I'd go with white t molding for the duck tales cab. I think it would help the whole thing pop better. Plus you don't want to over do it with too much bling. Looking forward to seeing these !

If you're gonna go... Might as well go all out. Since these are console games, why stay within the limits of the old cab designs? Might as well give it a full speaker grill with LED badassery. But you know, this is just me being negative...

You got a link to a build thread for that? I'd like to check it out.

It's not really a build. Just an after market mod I added to my AC/DC pin. Speaker light kits are readily available. The plexi cutout would be the only custom design aspect. Check out more here: http://www.speakerlightkits.com
