Pac-Man Restoration

It doesn't get much more iconic than Pac-Man when it comes arcade classics. This had been on my hit list of games for awhile and I was finally able to find one in good shape and a decent price earlier in the year.

Waka Waka!

Where are you getting all these classics!

I check Craigslist like a mofo. Also check forums and the Midwest Arcade Collectors Facebook group. Tip, use SearchTempest to monitor Craigslists within a broad radius of your zip. :)

I got this from a really nice collector who was temporarily downsizing while starting a family and moving into a new house. In great shape and a very fair price but about an hour away.

Pick up

Condition

Overall it's in good condition. Sides have some deep nicks and scratches.

The marquee is usable, just a couple scratches on the edge. The bezel is thrashed and one of the coin slots is covered.

Control panel is ok but will get new paint, overlay and controls including a new grommet for the joystick. Monitor and insides are pretty clean, very minor burn, not noticeable when playing.

Control Panel

The control panel wasn't too bad but wanted to make it like new.

I had the metal part powder coated and purchased a new overlay and bezel from Phoenix Arcade.

Here you can see the new overlay vs. original, Phoenix does a good job matching.

Applying overlay

Joystick needed cleaning and new grommet

Finished

I think the carriage bolts on top are supposed to be silver but I liked them black better.

Coin Door

There was some rust on the coin doors and the left 25˘ insert was scratched. Also, the right coin is gone up and no coin mech.

Cleaned and spray painted.

Finished

New coin slots, everything cleaned up, added a slot bezel on right but haven't been able to find a replacement mech yet.

Thanks, yeah I've been lucky most of my pick-ups aren't in too bad of shape.  Funny thing is if you're completely restoring them it's nearly the same amount of work either way.

Looking great as usual.

Bonus: I now know that a Pac-Man will fit in my Xterra too!

Question: Are you trying to compensate for color fading that occurred with the original art? Or are you just going for the best match regardless?

I was going for best match, the side art hadn't faded too much so it thought I might get a good color match taking a chip from it. Using a stock color worked better in the end, in both pics the lighter color is a Sherwin Williams match off of a chip and the ones that match almost exactly are stock.

Yellow base coat

For the yellow base coat I had Sherwin Williams do a yellow color match off the door and also picked up some Krylon Sun yellow which is what's recommended at http://www.gamestencils.com/paint-codes

In the picture below the Krylon Sun Yellow is on top and the SW match is on the bottom. Sun Yellow was an almost perfect match. I began spraying using the cheapo ($8 on sale!) Harbor Freight HVLP spray gun

I had a really hard time getting the Krylon Sun Yellow to cover, after 4 coats it still wasn't solid. Looking online at user reviews on the WalMart website I noticed this was a common complaint about this color of Krylon.

Since the Krylon was the color I wanted I took the can as well as the back door with the 4 coats on it to SW to see if they could match it with something that would give me better coverage. What we came up with was a stock color from their Resilience line called Vivid Yellow. It looks a bit lighter/brighter in the can but dry's nearly identical.

This gave me much better coverage. Amiibo Pac-Man approves.

Stencils

Next up, stencils. There's no two ways about it, Pac-Man stencils are a ---smurfette---, definitely not for the feint of heart. There's a lot of little detail and small pieces to account for which is a major pita when you're trying to get the backing off. I had issues with the stencil material not wanting to adhere in spots, I'd go to peal the backing off and the stencil piece would come with it, very frustrating and time consuming. These stencils were from This Old Game and a different material (semi-transparent black vs. white) than my Joust stencils and seemed less sticky. Not sure if it was the paint on the cab, the stencil material or the fact that that the temp dropped into the 50's which possibly messes with adhesion but it was very touchy.

Here they are lying on the floor, laughing at me, taunting me, daring me to try to apply them.

There's nothing on gamestencils.com about the Red/Blue colors so I had to do some forum scrounging. There are a couple of great Pac-Man restore threads out there, Spyridon's Return from D'oh and another from Phetishboy on klov. Spyridon used PPG auto paints which I wasn't familiar with and Phetishboy used stock colors I didn't like the match on so I had to dig a bit further.

Eventually I found a thread on the Classic Gaming Collectors of Canada site with some color suggestions on it. They mention using Behr colors Red Hot and Brilliant Sea so I decided to give them a try.

In my test they were way closer than the SW color match I had done from the cab (see below) so this is what I decided to go with.

Red

Back lines up to the back of the cab and 7" down.

Here you can see where the stencil wasn't sticking. I ended up having to use some push pins for my second coat, the looseness caused some overspray. I wasn't too worried as the other stencils cover much of this up.

Some lines are very sharp, others less so.

Finished side.

Blue

Masked and ready for blue. Here you can see how tedious it is to peel the stencil covering away. This is after sticking the stencil on and hoping as you stuck it you didn't peel away any of the smaller pieces.

You can see how some of the red is covered up by blue, the registration gives you some leeway. Some overspray on the blue here as well.

I had a major blowout of the stencil on the lower righthand part of one side. Decided to wait and see after the black was applied to decide if I wanted to fix it.

Couple more shots of line quality and overspray.

Finished red/blue sides and front.

Black

Black stencil applied. Notice all the small stencil parts in the brush stroke area and inset border lines in the boxes. This was a beast to do, just placing and peeling back each stencil layer took me a couple hours.

Sprayed and outer stencil removed, then the inner stencil pieces need to be picked off before it fully dries which is time consuming as well. Note there's supposed to be a small line of blue in the upper left black outline of the blue ghost's mouth. It was missing from the stencil and I had to freehand it in later.

The blown out blue portion after black applied.

Some line quality and overspray shots.

Final sides

Other comments

I applied a clearcoat of polycrylic over the whole cab after letting the paint cure. I tried it with the HVLP sprayer and wasn't getting good coverage so I ended up brushing it on. It dries super clear and you can't see any brush marks.

I didn't touch up any of the overspray areas. Original cabinets from the factory had overspray as well so it's more authentic, that's the story I'm sticking with. :D I think it looks really good as-is and it would be more noticeable with certain areas touched up. It's not perfect, but I think it still looks great.

I also didn't do the blue speckles a lot of people do with the toothbrush. I never liked the look of these so decided to forego doing them.

Totally agree. Factory Pac-Mans all had a little overspray and little imperfections so it makes it look more "hand made". Love it.

The power of the tumbler.

I found this Namco coin in the bottom of the cab and threw it in the tumbler with a bunch of other parts for about a week. Amazing how well it works.

One good thing about juggling multiple projects, washing and spray painting a bunch of crap at once.

Bezel

The bezel was flaking badly in the lower right. I order a new one from Phoenix Arcade, originally plexi and then glass when he did another run. A little pricey but they do a great job matching originals.

Original on right.

96-1 board

Added a Pac-Man 96-1 board. These attach to your original Pac PCB and add various versions of Pac-Man as well as some other games like Pengo and Space Invaders.

Had to make a little platform to mount it to so it wasn't hanging.

There are multiple code versions dependant on your board type, if you order the wrong one (like I did) it may look something like below. :banghead: Luckily the creator was nice enough to send me out a corrected version quickly and all was good. ;D

Here's a great overview of the board on YouTube for anyone interested.

Got a new marquee. Not sure if I'll use it or keep the original and just touch up the white. I kinda like the 'by Midway' and Bally logos on the original and the orange color is more orange than red like the new one.

As much as I love a good restoration, this one just needed some cleanup.  I would not have stripped it down like this.
My current collection:  Arkanoid^3, Asteroids Deluxe, Centipede, Donkey Kong w/DIIK, Frenzy w/Berzerk multi, Galaga, Galaxian, Gyruss, Mappy,  Missile Command, Multi-Williams, O'Boyles Arcade (Mame), Pac-man,  Sinistar, Star Wars, Tempest, War Gods

He freakin' stenciled it. It looks great. He went the extra mile and it shows.

Ha, Thanks!  It's been a while.  I'm not as active as I used to be.

I'm not saying it doesn't look great.  But with all the work that went into it, I think starting with a cab that was in much worse shape would have been better.  This one was really nice.  Probably could have traded it for a worse shape cab plus make a couple of bucks on the deal to cover some of the restoration cost.
