CRT?
Stop using cheap un-shielded speakers.
I know exactly what you are talking about.
Have a pair that is powered by USB and cost maybe $6.
Hum like crazy.
but kids don't seem to notice.
But i'm using an LCD screen on that PC so there is no pic distortion.

these looks nice but a little big for the Bartop  i have, I would have to get the speakers out of the housing.there are lots of option in amazon.

Please note that the minijack in the Pi is useless. It is a very ---smurfy--- 100khz 1-bit DAC that gets worse at lower volumes, at 44100Hz it basically allows 4 volume levels (2-bit!). To give you an idea, for CD quality you need 700kHz at least. And usually you have independent volume control, the Pi does not offer it. So all the hiss and hum is because of this. Don't start searching for ground loops!

So either use HDMI audio, or buy a 5$ USB audio interface. These are true 44/48kHz 16/24 bit DAC's, and infinitely better than the built in crap.
