« on: October 12, 2016, 10:41:08 pm »
TSIA

Quick rundown. New HDD, 2.09 chip, green board...game boots just fine. After selecting a course and the All 18 holes, Front 9, Back 9 game freezes.

Attached photo is before new HDD and chip.

power on unit holding down the start button to load a whole suite of tests. Also do a test on the hard drive. maybe you have a bad file on there. (even though it's new)

I believe I tried to hold start while powering on but got nothing to happen, not even the "Scanning for HDD" message.

And when you say test the HDD do you mean outside the game?  Or is there a test in the menus that I did not see?

by pressing and holding the start button at (start-up=boot)
u are forcing the game to a test menu (service if u will).
my questions how ever are
is this a "copy" drive ? ie: did some one or u copy this from another hard drive ?
have u done a "scan disk on the drive"
this test MUST  be done outside of the golden tee board ie: on another computer
if it fails scan disk ? then that is the freezing problem
did the person and or u do a scan disk on the original hard drive (THIS IS IMPORTANT) because the error
will be copyed over to the new drive as a error log and be made into a .dat file
which will cause the exact error u speak of

Thank you for that. I am assuming you want me to connect the drive to a Windows PC and run the DOS command 'scandisk' or do you mean 'chkdsk'?

For future testing, after the disk has been scanned and there is an error or is not, what are the next steps and vice versa for the latter result?

The drive and Eagle 2.09 was purchased from Arcade-Service. I made sure to match the version of the chip (G4C-US-U) to the HDD (GT Fore! Complete).

scandisk can be ran with other programs
personally I use partition wizard.
it is free ware and bug free (no malware)
and thank you for making sure we have matching hardware to software :)
saves me some hair :)
so yes scan the disk first and we go from there

Got it. Just to be on the same page, which operation within Partition Wizard should I use?  We actually use it in our shop regularly.

Now that I glanced around the UI a bit more I see there is 'Check File System' and that must be what you are referring to.

Took me a bit to get the drive back but I have and it is testing now.  So far there are 2 errors and it is not halfway through the test yet.  I am assuming this is the issue and there is no fixing it, just get a new drive.

rather large for 10meg but hey
just make sure u follow the simple rules
scan first to make sure u have no sector errors..
if no u should be good to go
also remember to get a fresh gt-complete copy
do not use your back ups as the dat file the game made will transfer over
and u will be in the same boat

No offense taken. It has been awhile since I have had to use CHDMAN but I am sure that I can get it done. I hope.  Any pointers?

yes most people forget to run diskmgmt.msc to enable the drive

also here

KILogo KI2Logo

Imaging and Restoring Hard Drives using MAME's CHDMAN Utility

What You Will Need:

Capability to navigate your hard drive from within DOS or a Windows command prompt.
ST9150AG Killer Instinct hard drive or MAME CHD image file (info only).
ST9420AG Killer Instinct 2 hard drive or MAME CHD image file (info only).
Appropriate hardware adapters: IDE to 44-Pin Laptop Adapter, CompactFlash card reader, USB adapters work just fine.
CHDMAN v140 - MAME's CHDMAN Utility for Windows Operating Systems (CHD v4 Support)
CHDMAN v146 - MAME's CHDMAN Utility for Windows Operating Systems (CHD v5 Support)
Typically this page is updated only on "decade" MAME releases - ie: v140, v150, etc.
Otherwise, constantly keeping up with MAME interim releases becomes a part-time occupation. :)

Due to a re-write of CHDMAN starting with MAME v145u1, the command syntax has changed.
The new LZMA compression algorithms have brought SIGNIFICANT reductions in hard drive image sizes.

This page has been updated to reflect those changes.

Always attempt to create/restore images using the same version of CHDMAN the images were created with.
CHDMAN is always under development, so be aware some older images and versions of CHDMAN may be incompatible/outdated.
As long as your CHD files match the MAME and CHDMAN release version, you will be fine.

Who Can Benefit From This Information?

You have an arcade game with a hard drive and would like to back up the data to protect your investment.
You have a personal hard drive (operating system or otherwise) that you would like to back up using free software.
CHDMAN is a free alternative to Ghost and other commercial image-based data backup programs.
You want to restore your saved hard drive image to another hard drive or compatible device (CompactFlash card, etc.)
You want to submit an arcade hard drive image to MAME developers without having to ship your hardware away.

WARNINGS and DISCLAIMERS

Mistakes made while using the following procedures
can result in total data loss, erased/un-bootable Operating System
drives, deleted partitions, etc.

A single typographical error can lead to a catastrophic loss of data.

If you are inexperienced or uncomfortable with this disclaimer,
please purchase a Killer Instinct hard drive replacement kit or
contact me or another technically-savvy individual about backing up
and/or restoring your data for you.

Windows, by its very design, will attempt to be user friendly,
but do not EVER allow it to format or partition/modify your
original/source hard drive during this process or it will be
absolutely ruined.

Init and Convert Disk Wizard

Disk Not Formatted

Initialize Disk

Do You Want To Format?

Before You Begin: Get Organized!

1.) I highly recommend reading these instructions from start to finish before beginning. Do not "jump in."
2.) If you are creating/restoring hard drive image files, use short paths such as "c:\ki" or "e:\hdimages".
3.) If creating a hard drive image, note/record the size (in Megabytes/Gigabytes) of the original hard drive.
4.) Ensure your destination drive has the available space required to create the hard drive image file.
5.) Copy the CHDMAN executable file into your chosen destination folder (for future version control).

Using CHDMAN to Create A Hard Drive Image (Physical Disk to a File)

1.) Disconnect / Remove any hard drives or flash memory cards that may cause confusion.
2.) Connect the source hard drive to your PC. The easiest way is via USB to IDE (or SATA) adapters.
3.) Click "Start" > Run, and enter "diskmgmt.msc". This opens the Windows Disk Management Service interface.
4.) Using the size of your source hard drive, find it within the Disk Manager.
5.) Record the Disk Number that Windows has assigned the drive.
Your "C" drive will usually be Disk 1, and in this example my KI 2 drive was assigned Disk 3.

Windows Disk Management Interface
Make note of the Disk number Windows has assigned your source hard drive. Leave Disk Management open.
(If Killer Instinct 2 is a 420.8MB drive why does Windows show it as a 402MB drive? Either ignore it, or learn all about it.)

NOTE: Many hard drives (including Killer Instinct) will not be assigned a drive letter in Windows.
They will be shown as unknown, unallocated, not initialized, or RAW. This is NORMAL and only means
that Windows does not recogize the drive's filesystem.

Open a DOS/Windows command window: Click "Start" > Run, and enter "cmd".

In Vista/Windows 7:
"Start" > "All Programs" > "Accessories" > Right-Click "Command Prompt" and select 'Run as Administrator'.

Change to the directory with your CHDMAN executable file. This tutorial will use "C:\KI".

C:\KI Directory
This image shows our "KI" directory listing with the CHDMAN executable present.
Depending on the version of CHDMAN, the CHDMAN file size may differ...(v140 shown)

CHDMAN Command Listing CHDMAN Command Listing
Type only the name of the executable to see all of the commands CHDMAN is capable of.

v140: To create the KI2 hard drive image, type:
chdman -createhd \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE3 kinst2.chd
CHDMAN KI2 Drive Image Complete
This process took the contents of PHYSICALDRIVE3 and wrote it to a file named kinst2.chd.

The PHYSICALDRIVE attribute requires the disk number you recorded earlier from Windows Disk Management.
If your source disk number was 5, you would have substituted "\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE5" in the example above.

v146+: To create the KI2 hard drive image, type:
chdman createhd -o kinst2.chd -i \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE3
CHDMAN KI2 Drive Image Complete
NOTE: If you get the error about CHS values, you MUST provide them. You can usually find
this information printed on the top of the drive, otherwise, look it up on the drive manufacturer's website.
KI2 Drive - CHS Info

Congratulations!
You have successfully backed up a physical hard drive to an image file.

It would be a good idea to burn this file to a CD or DVD
so you always have a backup copy available.

Using CHDMAN to Write/Restore an Image to a Physical Hard Drive (File to Physical Disk)

As you might expect, restoring an image file (*.CHD) to a physical drive is essentially
the opposite of creating an hard drive image.

1.) Your destination drive must be at least the same size as the original source drive you imaged.
2.) You should always attempt to image the identical make/model hard drive as the source drive
before attempting to use CompactFlash or alternate sized hard drives.
3.) If the manufacturer has implemented copy protection algorithms in their boot ROMs, imaged drives
will almost always fail. They may reset randomly, crash while running, or not even boot up.
4.) If Step #2 works for you, it is likely that alternate media will work as well.
5.) Some arcade machines will require modified boot ROMs to function 100%. KI 2 is a perfect example.

This example uses a CompactFlash memory card as the destination drive.

1.) Disconnect / Remove any hard drives or flash memory cards that may cause confusion.
2.) Connect the destination hard drive to your PC. The easiest way is via USB to IDE (or SATA) adapters.
3.) Click "Start" > Run, and enter "diskmgmt.msc". This opens the Windows Disk Management Service interface.
4.) Using the size of your destination hard drive, find it within the Disk Manager.
5.) Record the Disk Number that Windows has assigned the drive.
In this example my 512MB CompactFlash card was assigned Disk 0.

Windows Disk Management Interface
Make note of the Disk number Windows has assigned your CompactFlash card. Leave Disk Management open.
(If the CompactFlash card is 512MB, why does Windows show it as a 481MB drive? Either ignore it, or learn all about it.)

CHDMAN Info Output on KI2 Image File
Here is a directory listing of our KI folder with kinst2.chd image file and the CHDMAN executables.
The "-info" switch will report the CHD image file's specifications.

v140 - To restore the KI2 image file to your destination physical disk, type:
chdman -extract kinst2.chd \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0
KI2 Image Successfully Restored
v146+ - To restore the KI2 image file to your destination physical disk, type:
chdman extracthd -i kinst2.chd -o \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE0 -f
KI2 Image Successfully Restored
This process extracted the kinst2.chd image to the destination device (PHYSICALDRIVE0).
(The "-f" switch tells CHDMAN to forcefully overwrite any existing data/partitions.)

The PHYSICALDRIVE attribute requires the disk number you recorded earlier from Windows Disk Management.
If your destination disk number was 3, you would have substituted "\\.\PHYSICALDRIVE3" in the example above.

If imaging is successful, Windows may ask if you want to
format your drive. Do NOT allow this operation on your newly imaged drive!

Error Writing Hunk
CHDMAN v145 and lower: If you receive a "error writing hunk" message, this is due to
data and/or partitions existing on the hard drive. At this point, however, you have obliterated them with CHDMAN.

From Windows Disk Management (Action -> Rescan Disks), or disconnect and re-connect your drive or CF adapter.
Re-try the same extract operation and it should complete successfully. If you clean the drive using DISKPART
prior to imaging, you will not see this message.

In CHDMAN v145u1 and newer, you will be required to add '-f' to FORCE the overwrite of the existing data/partitions.

ALWAYS RE-VERIFY THE PHYSICALDRIVE NUMBER WHEN RE-ATTACHING DRIVES!

Safely Remove Your Drive!
Always "Safely Remove" your USB device from Windows!
(Right Click the USB icon in your taskbar, select 'Safely Remove Hardware')

Congratulations!
You have successfully restored an image file to a physical device.

it doesn't really matter, between the 2 versions the syntax options changed a little bit.... the instructions  for the killer instinct drive dump/load have the options for both older and newer versions. just check which version you have and use the appropriate syntax options. they both work equally.

Used 146. Easy enough. Although there are no clear instructions that you need to use 'diskpart' and the clean function.  If I already didn't know how to use diskpart, that would be confusing to some folk.

You don't HAVE to, you can just dump the data on and hope for the best. It's always a good idea to make sure you are writing to a good disk though. If i'm using a brand new drive, i'll just do it... but if it's used, i'll take the time and do a full check and format and whatnot on it to be sure. I don't want to take a machine 3 or 4 hours out of town and have a drive crap out on me 2 months later.

depending on the hard drive supplied, you may need to update the eagle bootrom to the latest version to get it to work with the harddrive.

if it boot loops with the new drive, attach an empty CD rom drive to the other drive connector and boot it up. the CD rom drive will make the machine tink it's being updated...fail, them boot the harddrive. it's a scabby work around for a compawompus programming error in the boot rom which was fixed in the newest version. (see other thread on eagle bootrom)

I have the eagle 2.09, so it should still work right?

ok let me ask a few questions here
are u using a off board ide reader/writer like a unit that will do the hard drive through usb ?
or are u slaving it on your personal computer ?
reason I ask is it is a lot easier to do it as a off board drive (usb to ide like)
converter
next if u do not mind download partition magic "mini" make sure it is "mini"
it is best for what u need to do and it is freeware and not bloated with crap
once this is done let me know. it gets real easy

Yes, using IDE to USB 2.0
I think I was using mini but I will check when I get back to the shop tomorrow.

I am not sure when I am getting the drive back, but not as long as last time.

And if I haven't said it yet, I appreciate all your help.

oh you are more then welcome

how with the drive hooked up (usb)
what u want to do is open partition magic mini  (use admin here)
allow it to open and detect the system
ie your internal stuff and the usb drive
once that is done
go to the # it says the usb drive is
2-x but not 1 never ever 1 as that is your base system drive
once u are at the drive # click on the left side delete partition
then apply (chk mark at top of screen)
once it is done
on the left side click clean (it will ask u to fill with 00's)
click enter
and start
wait for it to be done
once done (do not unhook the drive)
just shut down partition wizard
now we go to diskmgmt.msc "run as admin) very important
have it assign a drive letter
number (no need to format and or disk part)
it will spit back a #
now min the diskmgmt (do not close it)
now go to cmd prompt run this in admin mode also
type cd\.
type cd\chdman (this is chdman main exe is)
find the .chd u want to load to the disk
now type this command exactly as I post it
chdman createhd -o kinst2.chd -i \\.\PHYSICALDRIVE3 -f
the reason for the -f is it will format the amount of space the file needs
the kinst2 name is an example
when I do this I use like  gt06.chd
physicaldrive # is the 1 that diskmgmt told u it would be (reason for not closing it btw)
once it is done error free
u have written the file from chd to a hard drive
also remember remove any jumper settings u have on the drive
there is no real need for it in a single sided system (gt complete)

Getting an error "Can't guess CHS values because data size is not divisible by 512"

I need to provide those from the HDD correct?  Will I still need to do -f?

pm me your e-mail I will send u gt06 (complete)
I can .zip it up and it should go
unless u try this
instead of renaming it
just write the complete name of the chd down and type it in full
also u were doing all of this in admisitor right ?
as u must be in adm mode

I got this after manually putting in the chs values. I don't think that was an issue with the chd file, just the HDD.

ok 1 more time for old time sake
please do not give up , we WILL get this 1
first question
1=did u remove any and all hard drive jumpers ?
if so good
if not do so
2=u stated u used parition magic ?
exactley like i asked u to
delete all paritions ?
then do a wipe disk on the # that it showed u on screen ?
ie right now i am wipping a 500 gig it shows as disk index #2
with a usb drive as u said u are using it should be asigned a #
u need to WIPE THAT NUMBER
then we can colse it out (parition magic)
and go to diskmgmt.msc
and assign a number (NOT A LETTER)
then we min that we do not colse and we go to cmd
from there we go chdman
and enter the exact (last cmd) i pasted for u
of course in windows 7 and up u must be in adm. or it is for not
if this dose not him ?
then time to ask a few questions
1=is the (red light blinking) ? this is (ide-call-ack led) if it is not blinking he has other problems
and u will need the board for repair

No HDD jumpers.
Deleted all partitions, wiped disk on the disk labeled #2.
In your previous post you asked me to assign the disk (labeled as #2) a letter. Which I did. I have never heard of assigning a number in diskmgmt.msc.  Am I missing something?
Did the chdman command as you has posted with the changes made for my particular file name and disk number (#2).
Everything done as administrator.

I do know that the red IDE light does blink when reading the drive.  Plus I can hear it spin up and down in the speakers of the game.  (Something else to note is the sound does not work, maybe not related)  When the game freezes up, the IDE light does not blink anymore.

ok now we are getting some where
with the sound freezing and video  (courses not loading)
stop looking at the hard drive..and driving your self nuts..
sound freezing is a problem with its codec
but with video doing the same thing (not loading)
u have a few board problems to address
i will need a few answers
u have 2 status lights 1 @ 2 what  are they doing ?
well this freezing is going on ?
never mind the IDE light it is not relevant right now
we need to know status 1 @ 2
they must and i repeat blink at all times

ok i will a tad for u to read please
u sound like u have some tech inside so i think this may help u understand alot better :)
but first SCOTT get on the stick this thread should be moved...

1=there is 3 led's on these board's and 2 bank's of dip switchs
sw's 5 and sw's 51
these switch's control what the board is to do
i will not touch on some fine nite detail's expect to explain they put the board into various
state's >game/test<
for general use as follows

sw5 sw1 = off
sw5 sw2 = on
sw5 sw2 = on
sw5 sw4 = on

sw51 sw1-4 =on
this is normal operation mode

*for advanced user's please refer to chapter #3*

Now for the led's like i said there is 3 of them
staus 1 status 2 ide
status 1 and 2 MUST blink at all time's
red led (ide) will blink when the ide interface is getting polled
at boot the red ide led will blink once
then the post boot load's,then u will see it blink serval time's >game-loading<
so in short the "board" passed all of it's chk-sum's

Now if the green status led 2 dose not "flash"?
make sure u53 is good and in the right way,try to have a good spare on hand
any build will do (golden tee/buck hunter) any u53...for now
i have never seen the rs232 stop this, but the bat back-up will
this why i remove them for testing

status light 1 dose not flash u have problem's with
the ide interface chip u2/u15/u26
as these chips are tied to the main bus and they are polled first
they will cause a "lock-up" of the board ie :staus1: not blinking
the audio and vidoes are on status #2
so they are not the problem
as status 1 led and the ide interface are problem childern
i will put them in chapter #3
this will inculde the "special switch setting's" NOTE THESE ARE FOR BOARD TEST OLNY
AND MUST BE RETURNED TO THERE NORMAL STATE FOR PROPER GAME USE

that should help u
heres is what i need u to do
keep an eye on green leds 1 @2 most important
if they stay blinking ?
u are basicly home free (new video card ) common problem
sound is easy as pie also
servive switch (inside coin door) is 4 switchs
1=vol up
1=vol down
1=test
1=service
hit test and wait a sec
u will get a full screen of things u can do
scrool to sound turn it up
wa la u have sound

So once the game freezes up, the leds keep on flashing.

Bad video card?

thats where i would start
leds flashing means board is responding
remeber the video/sound are very last in the chain
and little to 0 attenion is paid to the video board/audio codec

Well, he put in the other card and the game was still doing the same thing.

I asked him to replace the whole board making sure to swap out U53 and U15.  Once he did that he said the monitor wouldn't even come on.  :banghead:

Gotcha.  Just as a note, I just noticed from that photo on the first post all the dip switches are set to on. Would that be causing an issue?

Scratch that, nevermind. I just checked again. All the switches are in the same position but still nothing on the monitor.

Ok so we are back at square one. Game freezes in the same spot even with the replacement video card. No guarantees that the card worked prior however.

ok
put a fan on the heat sink of the video card
and see if it plays longer before it stalls out

this is important
because the person may have a bad ram
either u111,u110,u113,u112,u18,u17,u19,u16
these 2 banks control video and audio
both (post processing) for the main micro

well if u had a hand held logic probe ?
I could explain to u which lines to monitor
in that .txt I posted.
short of that I just do not have any other answer.
I will keep looking in my crib notes ,  but when that happens I know its time for some probes
