Marquee questions

What's the general consensus on the best way to hold marquee (I.e. plexi and artwork) in place on a home built cab?

I'm reaching the point in my build where the two pieces of wood for the marquee go in, and want to make sure I'm prepared for how I need it at the end!

One other question - do marquees always sit vertically or is there classic precedence for them angled downwards a bit?? Thanks

Theres several ways to mount them.

You can cut slots in the wood that it sits in all the way around, or you can put retaining blocks behind the plexi to sandwich it against the cabinet panel.
You could even glue it in place.

Really depends what will work best for your build.

As for the angle, up to you and the way you want it to look.

Don't suppose you have links to those options? Or pictures? Really struggling to wrap my head around a) what i can make work for my cab (I'm building it based on the OND design on here), but mostly b) what would look best at the end...

Afraid I dont have any pics to show you but basicly:

A) you cut a recessed slot the thickness of your marquee around the inside of where the marquee sits and then it sits wedged inside the 4 pannels around it.
Obviously to do this your marquee has to be slightly bigger than the area you will see/hole.

B) the marquee is sandwiched between the front panel of the marquee (wooden case of your cab) and wooden batons screwed to the inside of the cab behind the marquee.
This is my preferred method as you can change it easily if required.
Make sure the batons are hidden bellow the level of the cut out though else you will see then through the marquee when you turn the light on!

Glued obv speaks for itself but I dont think many people use this method really.

So with B, the challenge is that i don't really have a 'front' part of the cab there - that was going to be the marquee!

I'm thinking maybe i'll use a kind of drop in slot, where i do the slot at the bottom piece and then use a couple of pieces of very thin wood at the side... This will then lean against the top piece of wood at the back.

I think any which way with my setup i'm going to get some shadow at the top from the batons :s

If it is totally open and you dont want to slot it then you could install batten front and back to sandwich it? Just be more work filling holes etc

Sorry if I'm being thick, but can you clarify what you mean there?

Screw some small lengths of wood 15mm square or something inside the cab.
Then put the marquee in resting against them and then screw another set infront but all the way around to look tidy.

Your other potential option is to use plastic angle to sandwich the marquee between but personally I prefer the wood.

The way I did it on my Blip cab was to cut a groove in the marquee 'space' at the top and bottom, and used t-molding to hold the perspex in. Looks pretty good from the front but it will only work if your marquee is 'flat' against the surrounding panels. i.e. if your marquee doesnt lean forwards or back.

That is a really awesome idea.

Problem is on mine that the top of the marquee piece isn't flat at the front so don't know if i can make it work

Definitely food for thought tho!
I might try a combo of that and the slot... Use a small piece of wood to create a slot at the top, and add t-moulding to that, then use your option at the bottom

Typically you use a marquee retainer to hold the marquee in place. I've used made for marquee retainers as well as simple aluminum L extrusion you can get at home depot. In either case the plastic marquee will rest against the wood while the marquee retainer or L extrusion holds it in place.
