Custom (Not A Typo) Coin Up Arcade
« on: September 05, 2016, 10:14:25 am »
I feel the need to play some arcade games again. So might as well log its build here.

I moved house since my last project and now i have a bigger space and a garden, no more balcony or horrible small storage basement build  :)

I picked up some basic stuff to get things started

The design will be a mix from my first and second arcade cabinet.

I hope to get the woodworking done in a month or 2 max, before the weather gets bad.

Moved the furniture and made some space for more important things than lounging.

Nice looking lines there.

Yes, that panel was kind of a pain to do. As i only have a router and a electric handsaw to build this. Making straight lines takes up a lot of time this way.
I am happy that it turned out ok.

Omg its massive lol...

Actually no, its even less in dept(94cm) then my first arcade street fighter cabinet(178cm high, 60cm width, 100cm depth. same width, but its a little higher because i wanted a bigger marquee for the logo.

But yeah crt builds take more space

Slapping on characters or logos on the sides is not everyone's cup of tea. So ill try this grid approach. I think i will use this style for the background and/or sides.

That's a pretty cool idea, is it going to be full wallpaper or are the marquees going to be part of some photo mosaic swoosh or something?

That speaker panel is REALLY nice. I've got  a very similar panel to do for my build. I've got a pretty good idea how I'm going to do it so would be interesting to compare notes once mines done

Wow, that seriously looks sweet. I was too preoccupied with my own build to notice this one - shame om me :-\
How do you plan on flush trimming the laminate on all the miter cuts on i.e. the coin door (and what I assume will be the volume panel just bellow the cp. ?

I'm debating with my self at the moment on how to go about this and whether or not I should make the miter cuts after I've laminated.

Yes, i added 6mm space for plexi and glued it on tight. its the bottom piece. the top will have screws like my other cabs.

i always laminate after i made the cuts. that way less chance to damage the laminate

Very pretty...

I'd remove the white text in the blue circle since I can't make out what it's trying to say.

It makes the most sense, how ever I still cannot get my head around how you i.e. trim the laminate on an edge that is cut in 20 degree angle?
Another thing, I see you didn't router out slots for the battons this time, what glue did you use?

Lovely proportions. I'm somewhat warming up to the idea of using laminate instead of melamine (which is super hardy, but tends to crack and shatter over the edges)

Here is the marquee. What do you guys think?

I think it's great, but I'd tone the background intensity/modify its colours a little bit so the logo itself pops more.

I agree with Lew about removing the white text.  Otherwise it is outstanding.  You've cracked the nut of displaying multiple characters within artwork by managing to look modern and old school at the same time.  It would not surprise me if some commercial vendor steals your design for a multi-cabinet.

Here is the marquee. What do you guys think?

Great job! Love that you aren't putting an LCD in. CRT is tougher but well worth it. Very nice clean lines on the build. Keep it up! :applaud:

here i explanded how. works really well. i also did this on the top, but getting close to the edge on the top can be tricky. also dust in your eyes at that height.

Ah how clever! -that top cut requires a lot of nerve though and a steady hand :)
I will do a few test cuts tomorrow on some spare laminate. I'm crossing my fingers hoping that my plunge saw will be abe to handle the miter cuts with out tearing the laminate   ::)
Did you use regular wood glue for your battons?

Did you use regular wood glue for your battons?

the laminate is glued with very strong contact adhesive. hella expensive bottle (40 euro, 50 usd)
and the battons are glued and screwd from outside in and inside out. glue is a type of no nails needed, can carry a elephant,  filling type

i got some more pieces done, they took a lot of time, happy that they are out of the way!

i managed to make a mistake. i used up the laminate needed for the outside and left other bigger pieces not used. ordering new will set me back for 150 euro.
or i will use what i have and it will have a seam at the bottom (cab is 186 cm, laminate is 130cm+60cm pieces)
If i router off the sides it will be perfectly flush. and once the artwork is on there. who will notice.. i dont even think you will feel a seam.
if needed i could fill the seam.

Need some feedback on the Control Panel art. All these logos makes it a busy cab. But thats ok. The big black panels levels it out.

I prefer the one without the logo in the middle -It's more balanced and relaxing to the eye
Both are good though, I guess it's a matter of personal preference
