NFL Last Man Standing Pick 'Em 2016
« on: August 24, 2016, 09:35:32 am »
I have ran this for close to a decade now and Chad ran it the first few years.  I was going to post it later in August, but I'm bored at work today and may not have time next week to do it.

Rules are simple.  Choose one game each week.  Pick the winner.  If you are wrong you are eliminated from the game.  Last man standing wins.  I will keep track of everyone's picks each week and display them by editing this post.

When making a pick, highlight it in the post, so that they're easier to pick out.  I don't want to miss anyone's pick.  If you don't know how to highlight it, copy somebody else's pick and change the color name if you want.

A pick must be made every week.  Failure to make a pick results in elimination.   Picks should be posted in this thread so that people have the ability to double check my work.

You cannot pick a game with the same team two weeks in a row.  If you pick the Rams over the Titans in week 2, you cannot use either the Rams game or the Titans game in week 3.  Having everyone help with this will eliminate the possibility of a mistake on my end on this item.  You can pick a team multiple times over the season.

Entrant pool closes an hour preceding the game you want to pick.  That means that if you want to pick Thursday's game this week you must do so at least an hour before the game starts.  Forum timestamps will be binding.

Good luck to all.  As always my goal is to make it out of Week 1 this year.  And the winner does receive forum rep points.

I dislike him because he's a choker.  But if you want to laugh at another man's injuries I suppose none of the cavemen around here will stop you.

Romo just needs to retire, for the sake of his own health. Can you imagine what it's going to be like for him in 10 years?

I 100% agree.  I had hoped the collarbone injuries would push him out last year.  Brain still functioning, hot wife, get out while your dick and brain still work.

Aikman retired at 34 because of his back injuries.  Romo's 36.  I doubt he can come back from this and be effective.

And they'd have beat GB a couple of years ago except the NFL doesn't know what a catch is (hint: Dez caught that ball).

We all know that was Karma paying them back for the week before, when they should have lost to the Lions.

I'll disagree.  Karma is the Lions always being losers for what they did to Barry Sanders.  Only team in the history of the NFL that's been around since the Super Bowl that has never played in it.  Screw them and their ---smurfy--- organization.

That's the first I ever heard that one.  Googled and all I can find is that some dude on Twitter started that idea up.

People say that.  Then they look at a table full of Lombardi trophies.  Every player in the NFL is cheating in any way they can.  That is football culture at pretty much all levels.  Football is a dirty cheat filled game.  If people really hate cheaters so much then they should stick with that moral choice and avoid football entirely.

BTW, Aikman retired because of concussions, not his back.  Apparently the need for integrity doesn't apply to the medical staffs or the league itself.

Best thing about dating a Patriots fan is they dont care if you cheat.  The NFL has been on a steady decline of talent and likable players. The NHL is gaining momentum in talent while the NFL seems to be losing it.

Actually, I'm a Buccaneers fan, which means I'm happy if you show up at all and don't embarrass us.

The NFL has always been mostly unlikable people.  The difference now is ever increasing direct access to those unlikable people.

The NHL works in cycles.  Every 10 years or so they start to gain and then they shoot themselves in the face by taking teams from good strong hockey communities and putting them in bigger US TV markets where nobody cares and nobody will ever care.  Then they expand and put a new team in a market where nobody cares.  They just won't accept that hockey is Canadian and needs to remain primarily Canadian in order to have a sustainable core business.

I may actually agree with Chad on hockey.  Seems like I've lived through two cycles of "hockey players are bigger, faster, and stronger than NFL players and the NHL is about to explode!"

Football is probably going to decline long term from all the concussion concerns.  I've talked to neurologists, neuropsychologists, neuroscientists, etc etc, been to presentations, negotiated clinical trials for sideline diagnostic tools, and basically all anyone can tell me is "not sure" and "soccer is more dangerous."  Problem is those guys retire in their late 20s and have 30 years of alcohol and drug abuse ahead of them.  Football or no football some of us are going to have early onset neurodegeneration.

The main problem is that with each cycle they permanently alienate more of their core Canadian fans.  I grew up playing hockey, was a die hard Nordiques fan, and should now be a serious NHL follower.  Instead I have watched maybe 3 NHL games in the last 5 years and those were at someone else's house.  Guys like me should be their main fanbase but we are scorned and either moved on to hockey in another form or just moved on entirely.

And all of us know someone who has that.  Their whole denial bit flies in the face of common sense and generations of direct observation.  Anyone our age has seen it first hand.  Anyone older than us grew up watching boxing.  Soon enough we're going to see a whole generation of 40 year old former MMA fighters that can't make themselves sandwiches.  These are all adults, they are making their own choices, but damn don't lie about it.  Just put it out there and let everyone make their choices.

Well, yes, there's clearly a small percentage that are permanently impaired from concussions.  We can't predict who it's going to be, though there's tons of interesting research with a lot of interest from the military and the NFL.  I don't think it's completely out of the realm of possibility that officer candidates have to submit to a functional MRI within the next 20 years.

The functional MRI is only so useful without the baseline MRI having already been taken before the trauma.  That's the problem.  They have to invest in the data harvesting in order to have something with which to compare.  They offer these at our high school in the fall for athletes but it's not cheap.  I haven't heard of many parents spending the money.  It is encouraging that the possibility even exists though I'm sure it isn't available to lower income areas.

They're working to eliminate the need for a baseline MRI.  The company I was working with basically had a headband and an android device and could do an assessment in about 10 minutes.  From what I saw, a trained monkey could run the app.  The trial was proving that device was as good as conventional methods, so "at risk populations" were going to be base lined, given the usual batteries, and then brought in again after blows to the head.  Would also be checked at the end of the season.

So cheaper and quicker diagnostics are coming... the money to be made off of it is awe inspiring.

NHL was doing fine until the 94 lockout that shortened the season and spurred a lot of fans. They finally recovered from that and things were looking good then BAM the 04-05 lockout that cancelled the season instead of shortening it like they did in 94. Finally get momentum going after that and BAM! Another lockout in 2012 that shortened the season.

Im kinda glad you arent a hockey fan, its one less thing we could have in common. Guess the good thing is you aren't a Bruins fan either. No one is a Buccaneers fan.

Try asking a Nordiques, Flames, North Stars, (original) Jets, or Whalers fan and see if they tell you the real problem was work stoppages.

BTW, try to be a civil person, it's not that hard.  Nobody has been insulting you in this thread.

Don't see where I insulted you chaddles, don't be a Nancy pants.

I was a nordiques fan, stayed with them when they went to colorado. I liked the Flyers too cause they are my local team. So when the Flyers sent all my favorite players to the Aves for Lindross I became a super Aves fan. Roy was just icing on the cake.

Teams moved because ticket sales slumped or the teams just couldn't stay profitable in the markets. I dont think a team was making money hand over fist with a great fanbase, with every game sold out every night just up and switched cities. So yeah, as a Nordiques fan , stoppages had the bigger negative impact on the NHL over team relocations/expansions

Talked to a back surgeon that's a Patriots fan.  He says Tony Romo is going to make a full recovery from his minor injury.

Worst news I've gotten in months.

You don't lock in until just before the kickoff of the game you picked.  Change as much as you want.  Just throw me a bone and let me know if you've changed it AFTER I updated the original post please.    ;)  I don't want to miss it.
