Steets of Rage Remake.
« on: July 21, 2016, 09:27:46 am »
So I downloaded SORR when it first came out and had a quick play through but due to one thing or another I never really got to get stuck into it.
Anyways the last few days after sticking it on my cab I have hit it hard and WOW I love it.

I mean I have always been a masive SOR fan, 2 being my fave game ever made but this remake is astounding really.
I love some of the new levels they made and It turns out I am rather fond on playing with Elle!

So how many others have enjoyed this game? I still have a long way to go completeing it 100% but I know its going to be fun getting there!

I'm still at the stage where I installed it and played a few levels, but never got back to it.
(this is typical with a lot of the stuff on the cab)

Also check out The TakeOver
http://store.steampowered.com/app/418620

Full disclaimer, you're buying an unfinished game and the developer's last game is several years past due.
(personally I think that the publisher they hooked up with has a lot to do with it, but I could be wrong.)

I think this one will get done because the mechanics are already there and the author's primary skill(and profession) is making art assets.
It was only one fairly long level with a boss at the end when I played it last.  It looks like a second level and two survival levels have been added since.
The reason I'm recommending it is because I stayed up late playing it until I beat the boss.
Very few games can suck me in like that anymore.

I have to say about TakeOver...  never been a big fan of disjointed graphics.  Rendered characters and drawn backgrounds just irk me.  Too much of a contrast.

Obviously you guys didn't have a snes growing up.  Since Sega fans won't shut up about it, the first thing I did when I got my everdrive md was play completely through the SOR games.  The Final Fight series is much better.... the graphics are better, the bosses are better, it's just all around better.  I'm not saying the SOR series is bad... they were fun enough to play through, but it's obvious from the get-go that it's a poor man's Final Fight, right down to blatently ripping off the sprites from part two onwards.

So my suggestion is, if you aren't familiar with the Final Fight series, just go play that.

Surprises me to hear that said, to me the FF sequels were just about treading water, and the original is very stiff.

For me SOR was Sega showing Capcom how it should be done, especially SOR2 / Bare Knuckle 2.

It still surprises me because a fair number of Sega's arcade brawlers were terrible (DD Crew for example, but even Spiderman with it's lame 'health decreases over time' system or Arabian Fight with horribly scaled graphics)

Also as has often been stated, the soundtrack elevated SOR2 from 'very good' to one of the best games of the generation.

The first final fight was fun, the rest were terrible, especially 3. Mighty Final Fight was better than FF3. Final Fight on the Sega CD was the best home port.
I enjoyed SoR so much more than any FF, SoR3 was just fantastic. So many special moves and hidden players!

I'd love to know which sprites you think were ripped off from FF2 to SoR/BK2

You must be drunk or joking!?

SOR beats FF hands down!
I was actually lucky enough to own a Sega and a SNES back in the day.
But back to topic...

FF was ok, I enjoyed playing it and it was fun.
Compared to SOR they were pretty on par.
But from then on SOR2 and 3 went wayyy past the FF series.
It has better move sets, more characters and their assosiated stats and the Music...
Oh the Music that is another level of awesome there!

Nope FF is practically insignificant to SOR.

It's good, but not great and certainly not one of the finest ever.  You'd have to go down a long list including tmnt and the simpsons before you ever got to Final Fight and that's not even mentioning SOR.

The best is probably Aliens vs Predators.... Capcom's swan song to the genre.

I'm in no way saying the Final Fight sequels are great, but I think they might be better than SOR 1 and 3, which are kind of a mess.  I just meant Final Fight and to a lesser degree Mighty Final Fight.

If you look at the SOR2 sprites the animations and poses of the enemies were lifted almost directly from Final Fight.... they changed just enough.  It's why the sprites in 1 were really tiny and they suddenly got big for 2.  In 3 they must have gotten nervous so they reworked those same sprites even more and removed some of the ones that were a little too similar.  Probably the most obvious one is the guy that strangely always faces away from camera in the yellow biohazard cape in FF and the same guy, minus the cape and with a duller color palette, in SOR2.  I don't mean they stole the sprites, but rather the character designs... they are original sprites, but it's kind of like how early AOF games blatantly ripped off Street Fighter.

I'm not sure if I've played Rushing Beat, but I'll check it out.  Thanks for the suggestion.

That was my point btw... you guys might enjoy Final Fight more than the SOR Remake so try it out.

Indeed, I think they should of done some kind of deal with Bomber and his team and sold it under license or something as its better than anything they have ever come out with other than porting the originals.
I love the originals but I would give my left leg for a good SOR4 but I know its never going to happen :(

The best is probably Aliens vs Predators.... Capcom's swan song to the genre.
Agreed, player specific weapons that can be dropped and used by other players, faux chun li with a sword and the game has a nifty gun mechanic.  The Punisher also ranks up there for me as well. Turtles in Time is probably the best 4 player one.

I'm in no way saying the Final Fight sequels are great, but I think they might be better than SOR 1 and 3, which are kind of a mess.  I just meant Final Fight and to a lesser degree Mighty Final Fight.
The Final Fight sequels were god awful. The third being the worst by a lot. Mighty Final Fight wasn't really a sequel but more of a remake that ironically played more like Double Dragon. I thought the experience system was neat and very innovative for its time. We're pretending that Revenge and Streetwise don't exist right?

Can you  at least admit the SNES ports of Final Fight were bad?  Single player only, only 2 of the 3 characters available (either cody and haggar or guy and haggar), tons of censorship (Damnd is Thrasher, Sodom is Katana and Posion is a dude named Sid, no blood, Belgar's wheel chair is an office chair?), and a missing level (industrial area) and Boss (Rolent/Rolento). Fighting at most 2 (or was it 3?) people at a time on the SNES ports of Final Fight really hurt that game.

Now I'll give you Y.Signal being a rip off of Two.P / J

But there's no way that bright ass yellow jacket is "dull".But that's pretty much it. FF's enemy wrestler is based on Andre the Giant ; SoR's enemy wrestler is based on the Ultimate Warrior. I dont think you can trade mark "a fat guy enemy" and almost every game has those. In SoR you fight robots, cyborgs, S&M Women, a gay male dominatrix , ninjas, bikers, fat boxers, kickboxers, guys with jet packs ,men in black suits, even a ---smurfing--- Kangaroo (who you can then unlock as a playable character).

Drawing the sprites bigger means ripping off Final Fight? That doesnt make sense.

They drew them bigger and more detailed to make the sequels better. They were redone about 15 pixels taller, you make it sound as if they doubled in size. I actually applaud them for redrawing the sprites for each game.

They found the limits of what the Genesis could do and worked around them. The sprites got bigger in SoR2 and then more detailed on SoR3 .

As for Rushing beat, in the US it was released as Rival Turf. Its pretty "meh" but jack's standing vertical split kick makes me laugh every time I see it. Wearing skinny jeans and doing a vertical split in the air..... the man must have no testicles. Also, he stole Blaze's german suplex drop ;)  I liked Brawl Brothers more than Rival Turf but neither is as good as Final Fight or Streets of Rage.

In case some of you were wondering what the features of SORR are.....

From the original author's website: http://www.bombergames.net/sorr_project/

Quote
It has been 8 years of work, but the final version is here, this is complete and ready for download, Surprised? ;)

Streets of Rage Remake is a project created from scratch, it does not use reverse engineering nor a single line of code from the original games. It’s all based on visual interpretation, comparing how things work in the original games and trying to mimic it for Streets of Rage Remake.

Some of its functions:
 * Animation timing, animation positioning, control response, X/Y/Z positions and physical movement for all characters are accurate to the original games.
 * 64 modules of AI per enemy to represent walking and reactions.
 * Collisions and damages based on the original games.
 * The same score system algorythm that is used in SOR2.
 * Grabs and vaults as in the original games.
 * Autosave savestates that allow you to continue the game from the same point, exit windows,  alt+x, etc.
 * Prediction of resources, to speed loading times.
 * All functions of all the original games in the series are emulated:
 - Over 30 configurable options in the menu
 - Star and Special Meter sytems
 - 6-button controller actions
 - Different types of weapons, and Special Weapon attacks
 - Police specials
 - And much more

GAMEPLAY
Tests have been conducted for months to ensure that the game plays well, plays accurately, has the smallest possible number of bugs and an appropriate difficulty level.

MATERIAL
The following material has been created exclusively for Street of Rage Remake V5, and V4 (with all that implies).

CUTSCENES
The game includes original cutscenes between stages, totalling over 40 cutscenes and 8 endings.

STAGES
There are stages in the game that are either completely new or remastered, adding more colors, more scrolling layers, interactive details not present in the original games and much more.

THE SPRITES
Over 10 designers have been working for years to create new sprites, creating 19 playable characters all with a complete set of moves, new enemies, new details on the stages and much more.

MUSIC
The music has been remixed by 5 different musicians, they are in OGG format (44khz, 128kbps) and contain practically all the songs in the original series, including Game Gear versions and some new tracks, a total of 76 songs.
 * All songs have been volume controlled and EQ.

SOUND FX
The game contains audio sounds from the original games that have been recorded directly from a Megadrive/Genesis.
 * Each enemy and character has their own voice channel (a total of 24 channels of audio)
 * The shrill sounds accumulate in specific channels to avoid distorting the audio.
 * Ambient sounds are a new feature of the game.

SUMMARY OF THE CONTENTS OF THE GAME

You can see the promotional poster for the game here.

103 STAGES
 - 93 stages in story mode
 - 5 stages in extra modes
 - 5 stages in the Prototype mod (separate download)

19 PLAYABLE CHARACTERS
 - SOR1 characters remastered with new moves
 - SOR2 characters with new moves
 - SOR3 characters with new moves
 - New playable characters

64 ENEMIES
 - All enemies from SOR1 remastered.
 - All enemies SOR2 (RGB color correction).
 - All enemies SOR3 (RGB color correction).
 - New enemies based on the Game Gear versions and even the cover the game!

REMIXES 83
 - 76 in V5.
 - 7 in the Prototype mod.

ADDITIONAL CONTENT
 - Profile Editor
 - Color Editor
 - Name Editor
 - Sormaker
 - Cutscene Viewer
 - Profile Viewer (and commands)
 - Image Gallery
 - 16 cheats
 - Battle Mode
 - Survival Mode
 - Boss Rush mode
 - Events Mode (16 events)
 - Volleyball Mode
 - Allied cpu mode
 - And more than 30 customizable options

The planned online feature had to be scrapped as there were problems getting the game to run lag free, even from early build. It would of taken longer to wait for an improvement on this, so it was left out and more time was spent on improving the game itself.

People always disagree with me but I think I prefer the SOR2 sprites to SOR3.
Not sure why they just look more fitting IMO somehow.

Necro bump, but I finally got around to this game.  There's an Original Xbox port that runs awesome, you can still download it if you get creative with cached websites.

The conversation on this thread cracked me up.  Last night I played through a bootleg of Target Renegade called Double Dragon IV on one of my multicarts, and with the Pi Zero image I downloaded, I've been able to compare Final Fight on arcade, SNES, Sega CD, and play Final Fight 2 and 3 in the past month.  (I've also owned Final Fight CD and the JAMMA board at various points in my life)  The SNES version gets a couple of things right but so many things wrong.  And then they released another version a year later that's still missing a character?   :lol

Sega CD simplified some aspects of the levels but it is a damn good port.  Final Fight 2 and 3 are terrible games.

Ever since Opt2not uploaded that video of how to scum Final Fight with the Haggar's suplex, the game's been kind of ruined for me but it still holds a very special place in my heart.

Anyway, get Streets of Rage Remake.

but we agree!

3 did some things right with the mechanics but everything else was bad, especially character design.

Funny I just added this to my Pi setup LOL

Plays really well on a Pi, Not worked out how to exit on it yet though :s

Which Pi?

I am using the Pi 3.
Think it will work on the 2 as well?

Ever since Opt2not uploaded that video of how to scum Final Fight with the Haggar's suplex, the game's been kind of ruined for me but it still holds a very special place in my heart.
LOL sorry!
