Cheers for the heads up on the steam sale. Starting my vpin build soon (weather permitting) so just starting to getting into the software side and building up a table library.

I thought getting an arcade setup was a ball ache. Pins are way more complex...

And we're back!

So I started setting up some visual pinball stuff, just to see how it ran. Since I have a real Comet pin I started with that one:

True story , my wife heard the music and said "why does that sound familiar?"

Then I tried out a fancy modded table, in this case Terminator 2: Chrome Edition

Everything ran pretty great so I decided to get started on the back glass screen. Found a nice 4:3 19" LCD in my pile, decased it, trimmed the metal as much as I could then built the bottom of the box:

Perfect fit!

Then I cut the top part, and put a groove in it for the frame (I'll bondo the groove on the outside)

Box is done!

Peg board backing, for both ventilation and cause it was yet another piece of scrap wood to use up

back home we go from my Grandfather's wood shop!

and here she is free standing. The back box will be hinged in the front with a latch in the back. There are holes from the bottom into the back box for wiring.

I will start putting the guts back in and trying to keep the wiring as tidy as possible. the Plan is to tuck as much power and video cable into the back box as possible to get the air flowing through the base of the pin cab.

Where you planning on jamming the speakers?

EXCELLENT QUESTION!

I'm not! Both monitors have speakers and both boxes work kinda like base tubes, the sound was loud enough with just the play field screen's speakers so I think the 2 tiny speakers behind the peg board will be just about perfect. Once I get it all back together I'll try to get a crummy video made. If the sound doesnt work as planned I can still mount a 4" speaker near the front of the cab body and wire in a tiny amp or decase a set of desktop speakers.

This is looking great! Any plans to put Pinball Arcade in there? I think I read you could get the second screen working with it.

Its really expensive and I missed the steam summer sale, right now its $150 for all the tables or $200 for all the pro versions. A good majority of the tables for Pinball Arcade are available through visual pinball/future pinball so its not likely to add Pinball Arcade unless somehow I can get the tables cheap. I might add it just for the free "Tales of the Arabian Nights" table. I already have like $50 spent for FX2 but that's like 45 tables :)   I am swapping out the 360 controller for an IPAC 2, so other than that $45 I've only spent about $10 on this build so far. I already owned FX2 on my desktop PC and play with a 360 controller :)

Liking this one a lot, wouldn't mine attempting something similar myself.
I'd love to see a Jr GingerBalls!
All joking aside, thats why I do builds. I get a lot of joy out of seeing someone getting inspired by something I built and making it even better.

To note, the play field plexi and side rails are not installed yet. I have to remount the monitor to optimize the experience and Id rather not do work that I'll just have to undo, to redo again in the future.
Other than software config, this project is nearing completion!

Pulled everything one last time, and restuffed the guts:

Mounted the backbox with LCD. It is still going to be bondo'ed and repainted, just not yet

Both screens on:

Figured since Comet is the first pin I ever owned, it should be the first one fully set up!

Sacred Stiff shown, the backglass is fully interactive with the game, the spider spins to pick the bonus when you make the skill shot

Backbox folds down, just like a real pin!

Gratuitous game shots:

Spiderman:

Terminator 2: (one of my favorite tables!)

and some goldeneye:

BONUS VIDEO MODE!
Here's a very short YouTube video of it running Terminator 2, just showing the DMD working on top of the backglass art on the second screen:

Also, Im playing with the keyboard cause my IPAC2 isnt here yet from divemaster.

You didnt stock up on minimus's man, since your going budget build sticking an ipac in that thing is kinda expensive.  Kade would of been perfect, i think there was even a pinball setup.

I have a few and i think Yot stocked up as well.....

ZING!  Yeah I took that snippet for my buddy Bobby then figured why not just post it up to youtube, I might end up taking a better one after I get all my tables set up and the front end figured out. I'll start working on the 25 minute intro now :)

total spare parts build. I was using a hacked 360 controller but it I cant nudge the table in pinball FX2 since the hack didn't have analog controls and you cant set specific buttons in PFX2. So I pulled that and wired in my Ipac from my box of parts. The Ipac kinda works, but it doesnt have the default keys set and I cant get the thing to reprogram so I'm replacing it (mostly because only like 5 inputs work ha!) I knew I was going to spend *some* money on it, Im just trying to keep it minimal.

Here's my cost breakdown so far:
little adjustable feet things: $4
Wood : $6
plexiglass: $10
Ipac: $48

So, still under $70 , not bad for what it is!

Yov've got my attention with this one fella, I love it!  I never thought I'd reconsider a Vpin again. Didn't we cop some criticism from some purists at ZapCon over Vpins, that freaky couple playing on  HaRuMaN's cab for a high score I think it was.

Anyway, it never occurred to me to build a mini Vpin.  Don't worry I won't even concept my own version till my other projects are well completed. That red paintwork....nice.

Mini is the only way to go on a Vpin. Full size costs way too much when considering the amount of play you'll actually put on it. With a mini Vpin, you can scratch that short lived Vpin itch affordably.

I agree. A playfield monitor for a full size is pricey. I've seen people paying over 500 for a TV. I got a 22 inch at goodwill for 20 dollars this past Friday, and most people these days have a small monitor laying around somewhere.

You just have to shop for deals, i got a 46" samsung for 300.00 ebay and 200 for a 32", i'm not that much of purist to go for the FEEL of playing a pinball, so i'm bypassing all of the solenoid knocker stuff to keep it in an upright cab range.

I'm just gonna stick with FP due to the BAM mode and call it a day.

  • You know you hear the music in your head...
Amazon had a 46" TV for 220 bucks this past weekend.

The real cost comes into play when you are seeking authenticity. Shakers, real DMD, knockers, etc.

Had it running for 3 hours, no heat issues. Fan on the bottom near the front pulls cold air in, both the CPU cooler and the power supply draw cold air in from that, and both the GPU fan and a big case fan on the back push hot air out. The angle of the plexiglass on top lets the hot air flow towards the back to be pushed out. Peg board on the back of the "back glass" box vents hot air away from that monitor.

Once everything is in place, I'll give it a real stress test and let 3DMark run for an hour or something and check temps but so far , so good *fingers crossed*

That or the Pingerball :)

If I ever do a full sized cab, it'll get a baller plunger. For this, the button launch is good enough.

Bumping this thread because Its not done. Im about to dump more money and electronics into this thing, I really hope I can get it all to fit.
This is what the insides look like meow.

Might get shorter SATA cables and whatever else I can do to free up as much room as possible.

I spliced all the power cords together, wire nutted them off, then taped over. Im also going to be removing the front USB panel (its curled up in there somewhere) and just getting 2 short USB extenders since I dont need the extra ports, the devices just dont fit between the  mobo and the side of the cab.

Here's the front end (PinballX) WIP:

Still to do is to strip, prime, repaint, and seal the "rails"
possibly make a faux lockdown bar.
Add about a bajillion more tables
See if I can fit the top secret upgrade into the cab

What is the top secret upgrade? Have some ideas for lock down bars in my head that I can't quite put into words. Also check out Melon's mini pin build. He made a cool lock down bar from wood.

Heres my hint for the top secret upgrade:

I saw melon's mini before, was partially an inspiration for this build. I'm going to try and machine a metal lock down bar but I'm probably going to steal his idea for "locking it down" or use magnets.
