Emulation controls wont work in Maximus

I have configured my Xin Mo controls in Mame and my other Emulators, but in Maximus I cant seem to get them working when I start up each emulator.  the controls work fantastic in the front end, when the game starts the emulator doesnt read the controls I originally configured for them, but the front end controls are still working once Mame starts.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated!
