Will 19" VGA monitor have same mounts as 19" RGB?
« on: June 18, 2002, 02:31:31 am »
My 19" Electrohome G07 RGB tube has packed it in - i'd like to replace it with a cheap alternative...if I disassemble a new 19" VGA monitor, will the four corner mounts be in the same location as my old one (since it was mounted on a supporting frame)?

Also, it is possible to use a 19" TV tube and hook it up directly via RGB and sync to the VGA output on the PC, assuming i've set the PC to run at a lower scan rate (through ArcadeOS, for example)?

I doubt any two 19" VGA monitors have mounting points in the same location. If you go with VGA, you'll probably need to get it and open it up and design some sort of gizmo to mount it.

TVs don't work with digital RGB signals, so no, you can't hook it up. If you go with TV, you need to go with S-video. There is some guy on the net who sells a circuit board to convert a TV tube into an arcade monitor for $65 or something.

If you like your arcade monitor, you probably won't be happy with VGA. otoh, a decent VGA monitor will be a lot better for vector games, if you have the hardware to do anti aliasing and high resolutions.

I think it's safe to say NO.  ;)

The reason is that arcade monitors state their size differently than PC monitors. For example:

My Wells Gardner U3100 19" SVGA Arcade monitor has 19 VIEWABLE inches.

My ViewSonic A90 19" Monitors have LESS THAN 18 VIEWABLE inches. (All pc monitor manufacturers lie about the size. They all have an explanation, but fact is arcade monitors will always be larger than the same size PC monitor.)

The plastic case on the ViewSonic is about the same size as the WG U3100 picture tube. Therefore the tube has to be smaller.

If you are hell-bent on trying it... Try a 20" or 21" monitor with a viewable size of 19". It'll be the closest. If it doesn't line up exactly you might be able to redrill the frame. Be sure to read http://www.arcadecontrols.com/arcade_monitors.shtml too!  :o

I was looking at the U3100 as a replacement -- does it have scanlines, even tho' it is VGA?  I heard that it did.  That wouldn't be a bad thing if it did.  How much did it cost you, and where did you get it from?  I've been having a hard time trying to find one around here.

The .75 dot pitch makes real nice scan lines. Looks great in any game. Looks like hell in Windows98.

I got it as a birthday present. However My fiance paid $399. Later Wells Gardner said they'd sell it direct for $375. As I write this the WG website says $295. http://www.wellsgardner.com

PJ - is it possible that you can provide me a screenshot of something on the U3100?  How about Ms. Pac-man or something that we all know...

Visited WG's site and they have two U3100s listed, with a difference of $100 between them.  Looked at the specs and they seem the same - what gives?

TDD, forgive me for stating the obvious but have you tried emailing Well Gardner to ask what is the difference?  You might want to do that and then post what new info you learn.

The differences between the two U3100s are (from WG...):

"The WGM1931-M2TS26H has an RCA tube in it. The WGM9131-M1GS08K has an Orion tube in it and the Orion tube is less expensive. The 26H monitor has an M2 frame which means there are removable brackets for side or bottom mounting. The 08K monitor has an M1 frame which means it doesn't have the removable brackets."

There you go...
